Doing basic maintenance on any bike is a must and I'm sure many of you know this already, passing this good habit on to friends and yes for us old buggers our kids is a good way to share information.
Well, I did just this today, the young bloke had a strange noise coming from the front, long story short it turned out to be a noisey speedo hub.

So we cleaned out all the crap from the speedo hub.

Kurt is more than happy with the result, and off home he goes

I'm reporting you to Dairy Farmers. That is highly illegal. Milk crates remain the property of Dairy Farmers. >:(

Got a call from son, I will call him-YZF750R, I think you might know him. Anyway the bikes dead like one minute its idling away the next, its got nothing, no idiot lights are on, engine dead.
Now I'm not posting this up to ask, 'what do you guys think it is', I thought this might be of interest because it might happen to any of us.
To me two things could stop a bike like I described, blown fuse and or dead battery, look I will tell you all now, I know nothing about electrickery, I've mentioned in another post that I know zac about this stuff. OK, main fuse has blown, replace main fuse, still nothing. Hmmm..... I'll be over in half an hour to have a look.
Checked the battery and it looks ok, terminals are clean and tight and is holding 12.78v, new fuse is in correctly and has power through it ok, lots of wires, relays and connections, its about now that I wish we had a wiring diagram, check for power up to the ignition switch, yep power running up to the switch - good, remembered about the secret kill switch, looked ok, so now I'm somewhat lost as what to do next so I went back to the ignition switch and at the connector ( where the wiring from the ignition switch joins the wiring loom) and when I put the multimeter into the connector on the ignition switch side I still had power, but when I turned the key on I lost power, me thought how could you loose power on the cable before the switch.
So I pulled the connector apart and found the problem, a burnt out spade fitting that was creating the short, I cut the crook bit out and did a temp job on the wire and...... Yes its alive!!
I'm a bit puzzled as to why the spade fitting was corroded/worn when everything else looked in reasonable nick, I only hope that we dont get more electrical problems.
I guess what I'm trying to say here is that even with little knowledge and some logic in your thinking some things are not beyond you, you only think they are.

Good job Mick, but believe me when I say ... 'it would have been beyond me'.

Mark, if you can check the terminals on a battery are tight or replace a fuse, well you've made a start and eliminated two possible things, ok, so you dont know caused the fuse to blow, so what you made a start and that is what counts.
We'll never never know, unless we have a go [thumbsup]
Mmick
... you lost me at 'check the' [laugh]

Hey Mick.
I think you will find a loose or poor connection tends to heat up and burn or corrode. And end up like what you found, especially the higher amp connections.
That spade connector has probably just worked loose with vibration and when it heats up a little ,the spade fitting will also soften and lose its clamping tension.
Or something like that.
I will stand corrected :)
It is good you found it, i dread when they day comes,my Monster won't light up :'( i will know who to call [thumbsup]
