Title: Me and my air-cooled V-twins... NOW w/pics on pg2!
Post by: Duck-Stew on June 12, 2008, 06:51:48 PM
Well, I bought a new scoot today...

I won't have pics up till tomorrow, but wanted to post up tonight.

She's a 2008 Harley-Davidson XL1200N, or for those uninitiated into Harley-ese, it's a bobbed Sportster they call the Nightster.

I'm impressed with the torquey engine, and the transmission actually shifts good too.  Shakes a lot at idle, but that goes away at 6mph.  It's nice not to *have* to rev it up much to take off.

I'm unimpressed with the stock pipes ( ain't we all ), and the stock suspension needs work (sounds familiar, eh?).

What sold me on the bike is the attitude (which I got used to w/ the bobber), but I wanted a change from Ducati's.  That, and my willingness to rip a Duc apart to mod it.  Not that the HD won't be modded mind you ...  Just not as much.  (I have my CB750 (now 836) engine for that.

Congrats!  That's one of the few H-D offerings I would ride. [thumbsup]

Gonna go with some straight black wrapped pipes?

I really like the looks of the Nightster, looks kind of retro.  If I had a Harley, I would have one of those.  Good luck!

I plan on removing the stock chrome heat shields, buying some black header wrap and some black slip-ons.

The bike has custom paint the dealer did and it is really subtle and old-school.

Oh, and get this....  no remap needed for slip-ons and the pipes and $300- $500 list price.

Nice!  8)

It is supposed to say that the "pipes ARE $300-$500" above.  Stupid I-phone.

Here's a stock pic since Stu is lazy...

Looks like HD uses the same gravity defying mechanism Ducati does when they take pics...

Thought about getting those as a second ride.  Have to post a review of it is in the streets once you get some more miles under your belt.

I absolutely agree with you on the XL1200N's looking awesome and told myself when i saw one that other than the nighttrain i'd see myself riding one of those.

I'm curious what you got in mind for the 750 Stu, i just bought an 81 cb750 that the guy modded to a cafe racer style but i'm more interested in making it more of a cruiser/bobber than a cafe racer.

i might shoot you some questions if you don't mind collaborating with me on my project.

congrats on the new bike man, enjoy  [thumbsup]

The CB836 already sports a Mallory dual-point distributor, and I have access to a 60cid Roots style blower and I have to find a home for the 3.5 gallon Moon-Eyes dragster tank, so I'm thinking of one helluva chopper/dragbike for my project.  PM me if you want.

See now, I have always kinda liked the V-rod and the various "sport" versions of it. Would definitely be an "addition" only, not a replacement. Unless I was thinking of replacing my current power-cruiser... But that would be hard to do as it handles/brakes etc sooooo much better than anything I have ridden from HD.

I can already see a set of Showa/Ohlin's USD forks on it with custom cnc'd triples.  Plus a set of dragbars.  Ditch the signals (as well as reflectors please!) and...

oh wait... have you had a chance to even ride it yet?  Mod'ing can be a bad affliction to have to be honest.

A set of USD's on a Bobber?!?!?!?  Blastphemy.  I like the regular forks on the bike and will keep 'em thank-you-very-much.  Signals are staying on the bike, but the reflectors are going to go away.

Yes I've ridden it and it runs/rides fine for what it is.

And that's just the point:  It's fine as it is (minus the pipes of course and some mods to increase ridability (fork oil, rear shocks, comfy-er seat, etc.)).

If I rip this sucker apart just for mods....  And leave myself w/o a bike to ride (like I have been for the last 8 months now)....well, that'd just be dumb.

I test rode a 2004 rubber-mounted Sportster 1200 when they first came out.  The dealer had it done up right with their Screaming Eagle pipes, airfilter, ignition and carb.  That bike was definitely the quickest Harley I've ever ridden, (probably even quicker than my Dyna Twin Cam which has been hopped up with S&S heads, carb, etc.)  Anyways that Sportster felt awesome in a straight line.  I know I have ridden faster bikes (Sportbikes), but that Sportster just felt fast.

I hope yours gets the right combinations of go-fast parts.  Be careful.  The stuff Harley has been selling is not as potent as what they used to sell.  I think their pipes and ECU re-maps are probably still EPA compliant.  Try to get a test ride on a bike with the parts you want.
