Im looking for a good, cheap tank bag for long weekend rides in the rockies this summer. Its not my first choice for any sort of luggage, so for it to make the cut at all, i need to to:
1) not scratch my bike
2) not be a hassle
3) be cheap, sub $100
4) not be a hassle

im planning on a rear rack and a few (2?) seal line dry bags along with my tent and fly rod on the back
also will be used to get to DITR and be the cheapest, campyest mother make the beast with two backser there.
p.s. one seal line bag is entirely for booze (after rides)
I just got the bags connection daypack on my S2R... Just big enough that it's not in the way. It attaches to the filler ring on the tank and can be pulled off rather quickly.
take a ride to the local shops/motorcycle supply stores.
the 696 is hard to buy for with generic stuff because of the curve of the tank plus you need straps not magnetic.. so it even further limits your purchase... oh and the gascap mounts dont work either... again limiting your choice.
i had one for my trip that didnt follow the curve and it ended up breaking strap mounts do to the wierd mounting i had to do.
Shit, now that I look for pictures of it... you're right. the gas cap isn't normal. Balls!

i have a nelson rigg cl-350 from when i had my old sv650... prob is that the 350 is a magnetic tank bag and i'll need a strap one now. overall, the bag is solid and big. fully expanded, it can fit a full face helmet... even my XXL one so anything smaller will def go right in too. good to lean on for highway miles due to it's size and i was pretty happy with it.
what i'm thinking is that i'll go and replace it with the same bag but in strapmount... because newenough/motorcyclegear.com has that version (cl-450) for about $66.99 on closeout right now.

i dont know how the fit will be on a 696, but i dont think there will be any issues... and i didnt have any scratches on my sv650 from the cl-350.
that being said, the line they used to replace the 350/450 has a system where you can switch btwn magnetic/suction cup/straps in case you want that interchangeability... and can also be used as a tailbag.
it's not much more and with the mounting system it's still under $100

How much cargo capacity do you need in the tank bag?

im planning on making a rear rack to enable me to carry a couple 15 - 20 liter seal line dry bags, and my tent on the back. so really room for rain gear, cell phone, gps(?) and other smalle things up front, wouldn't mind a larger one though, to block wind.
im really trying to avoid a backpack, especially with potentially a lot of crap sitting high behind me.

you can always get some of that rubber rug traction stuff/drawer liner and cut it to go under the tank bag. basically, you'll just put that down as a mat and then put the tank bag on top. stops all scuffs since nothing cept soft rubber touches the tank... mainly used for magnetic tank bags since little bits of metal can get stuck to the magnets and then scratch the hell outta the tank, but works for everything.
you can find it in bed bath and beyond or any home store... home depot/lowes might carry it too...
