Lets face it. He had plenty of time to return to pits, shower, change, consult his media advisor and watch the end of the race. He had that line for some time and was obviously just waiting to use it.

I would have been plenty pissed off but what can you do. That front end is still costing him races.

NB - post content purposely kept cryptic for spoiler reasons.

Just my opinion, I hope devil's advocate is okay for you guys.

------
Meh - it all reeks of fabricated drama.
You push hard, sometimes mistakes happen, that being said, it was undoubtedly a terrible move with bad consequence and the guy is a knob for trying to make it stick.

The maker of the quote here had every right to be annoyed with it happening and definitely with the lack of assistance from the marshals afterwards, but that's about it... (Apparently) The Twitter-verse was ablaze from race mechanics who were suggesting that the rider was carrying on like a douche bag afterwards... You can kind of wear that.. he's just been taken out of a race, high adrenalin, yadda yadda.

However...
Maybe it's just me, but if someone comes and apologises to you, you either accept it or you don't.. and you move on. For my money, carrying on like a petulant child and making a smart ass comment in a foreign language whilst smiling and "accepting" the apology just doesn't work.

Yup, I probably hold the rider in question to a higher standard.

Not to sure about this, you could be right, but it just seemed like he was going in to hot for those conditions... could still be the front end issues but im leaning towards an overly aggressive move in the wet.

Couple of aggressive passes in that section of the race. There was a pretty big squeeze out by the then race leader to take get in to that position.

Drew, can you rename the thread to put "MOTOGP JEREZ SPOILER" in there so we can talk freely.
Surely anyone who cares knows not to read the forum, the newspaper, listen to the radio, etc.

Yep I have to say it was a great race and not for who won but for who lost.
And I'm not just talking about those who got taken out but those who were far in front and had it in hand and chucked it down the road and there was more than one of them.

Now onto Moto 2

You have to feel for Simoncelli. So close to getting his first under the belt!

Ahh good times, thread has spoiler in the title now.  I even obfuscated the link with bit.ly in case it gave something away

Casey could have been smarter from a PR perspective. Even if you are right, sometime you dont need to *say* it. Doohan telling Criville that his "perception of racing needs to be fine tuned" comes to mind. ;)

I reckon it was all a conspiracy to get Spanish riders 1st and 2nd. The marshalls didn't seem to want to help anybody out.

to be entirely cynical that was an planned aggressive Rossi move that paid out in his favour in more ways than one

as for the apology whilst people may think Stoner was a smart ass - who's a bigger ass for not taking his lid off and thus making it a little more sincere?  Those who argue Rossi wanted to get there straight away and thus not take his helmet off is crap - you can easily remove your lid and pass to your cabana boy in the time it takes to walk between garages.  I reckon Rossi kept the lid on as he was smiling even more.  End of the day Stoner has stated it was a race incident and accepted it.  As for the Spanish Monkeys err Marshalls well they will always help a European before anyone else.  I think Edwards got similar treatment with his off.

Rossi keeps that up he wont be popular at PI.  I for one have lost a bit of respect for him.

Good on Stoner for playing it up - after all it was all for the media!

First thing I thought of too. You could just TELL he was waiting to use that line.

That and a snide remark about "oh, is your shoulder still bugging you?" or something to that effect

With a simple mind like mine it is a bit hard to tell who people are siding with (amongst all the cryptic pre-spoiler posts), not that it really matters. Oh and I  should mention I saw a video grab of the 'racing incident' but nothing else.

But I can't help but imagine many would be thinking differently if the roles were reversed.

But I can't help but imagine many would be thinking differently if the roles were reversed.

That would be be highly improbable.  Rossi is renown for risky or even dirty passing manoeuvres (part of what makes him world champion).  Stoner has copped the rough end of the pineapple from Rossi a number of times, most notably Laguna Seca.  Gibernau, Biaggi (although he probably deserved it), and to a lesser extent Lorenzo are also people who would argue this.  My point is that Stoner would of passed cleanly, got ahead, then washed the front end out only taking himself out, and there is plenty of examples of that.  I cant remember an example of where Stoner has initiated fairing bashing in a pass - unless in retaliation. (Now I have said that I am sure someone will pick out something somewhere!  ;D ).

Don't get me wrong I still have a lot of respect for Rossi and his talent, but of recent times I think we are seeing ragged edges appear.  He does have massive cross hairs on him and Ducati to succeed.

Oops sorry if I led you the wrong way ... I was talking about the reaction (the title of the thread).

If Rossi had made those comments everybody (and I don't just mean here in Ozmo-land) would be laughing it up, congratulating him and all the other bullshit. Instead I keep hearing Stoner is just being petulant and playing to the media ... and this is coming from people applauding Rossi and his good grace [laugh]

Disclosure: OK I admit to never really liking Rossi ... and prefer to see an Aussie doing well. I don't doubt they can both ride but their different personalities seem to impact on how people feel about their riding abilities ... which seems a bit screwed up to me.

Rossi is better with the media because they reward the wanker behaviour. Casey sounds whiney because ... well, you sound that way before your voice breaks.

As always well said.
IMO Stoner had too long to think about it, he had 20 odd laps to think about what he might say and when it came down to it the was a camera there showing the world how it was handled.
If it was sorted out on the side of the track with helmets on and marshells keeping the peace no one would have known exactly was said other than hand signals.

We might have even seen an old Senna v Prost bung fight!

I still don't see what was wrong with the comment ... it was perfect for the situation. It would have been worse to say that at the side of the track as it could imply some sort of intent on Rossi's part.

After the fact and said in good humour (I heard he was smiling) ... I think it is just the right amount of shit-stir. Stoner knows Rossi can ride - Rossi knows that Stoner can ride. Rossi knew he make the beast with two backsed up ... if this is all Stoner needed to do to get it off his chest, then he is a bigger man than most.

Perhaps Stoner was trying to say Rossi is a has-been, but I doubt it ... I took it as almost friendly banter between two fierce rivals that are constantly in one anothers company. Perhaps there was a little bit of Casey showing publicly that he is not intimidated by what Rossi has achieved - if so, well played young man ... now go and ride.

Fact is, if people don't like you (and the media apparently even moreso) - you are always going to be made out to be the bad guy. I don't blame Casey for any of it ... I think he has been quite restrained considering the circumstances.

and this is why I am beginning to dislike Rossi even more - used to be a fan and loved his shenanigans, but of late it is smacking of over ego.

Stoner has been employed by Honda in the faith of LS - he has a great chance of winning the championship.  I say good on him and give Rossi more shite!

It's well know the two are good mates off-track so I tend to think this was just some friendly sh*t-stirring and a bit of manufactured "drama" to keep the focus on the series, and it worked didn't it. They were probably both laughing about it later-on and the kafuffle it raised. This is after all a sport that feeds off the media and bigger-than-life personalities it encompasses.

There would have been no fun if the two mates had shook hands and carried on as if nothing happened, what they did was what we expect them to do and they gave it to us, but with no swearing or the chest-bumping of the F1 GP drivers in similar incidents. Quite civil I thought really.

IMHO Yes, Rossi is a great rider but world champs aren't just about great riders.  They come about through a combination of great rider, great bike, great team, and a certain amount of good fortune.
Unfortunately at the moment Rossi is not on a great bike (heresy I know) and great riding skills can only compensate for so much.  Good judgement should tell him that a move like what we saw on the weekend may be excused if it's for the lead on the last lap of a championship deciding race, but at this point in the season, early in the race, and not for the lead, it's just plain poor.  Those who realise the limitations of their bike and are riding within them shouldn't be punted off by someone who can't come to grips with a poorly performing machine an instead charges on regardless.
As for Casey, sometimes discretion should be the better part of valour (I think that's how the saying goes).  Pretty ordinary from the marshalls though.
