But why spend cash on something to get it to a place where there is another product that is quite possibly better. Doesn't make sense.

We're not talking about me or my monster, it was never in the conversation.
And I'm not talking about Monsters at all.

And it's not Jap stuff either, which there is nothing wrong with really it's just that most people here prefer Italian machinery.
I think you'll find it's all about German gear.

i realise that we arent talking about monsters , that was a side point regarding why buy a monster when there is something better for less money ;)

I guess you sens of humour was lost somewhere along the way Matty  [roll]

even a newer GS is over the top imho , the old ones were tanks that were far lighter and could be fixed anywhere with some fencing wire

but still a nice although weird bike (BMW's) a bit like ducati's

they have put on far more weight and height over the early ones

making it far harder for tighter offroad adventures over say a DR650

and price wise new$ makes it a little hurtful throwing it away in the scrub ;)

Finlay something intelligent ,
I did buy it Heather , at first I was in 2 minds , Multi or GS
But after riding the GS there is no comparison , the GS is a specific bike . Un like the multi bit of a chameleon, mind you if I was to have 1 bike for commuting , touring and a bit of unsealed roads it would be a Multi. Lots of commuting , touring and unsealed roads GS with out a doubt. If ever your in Syd give me a buzz you can go for a squirt and form your own opponion .

List me put some K's under my belt and il let you know . [thumbsup]

Il give you an update after a bit ride  [thumbsup]

So what you saying buying a monster and moding it into a hardcore tourer is the better and cheaper option.

How stupid of me thinking to buy the Adventure tourer from the start ,i could have spent 20K on a monster and mod it .

Thankyou J5 your input was of great value to those thinking of doing the same and avoiding making the mistake as I did  [bow_down]

nope

buying an old GS would be far cheaper and may be a better option or a DR650 depending on where you want to go

Good choise Doc. I am waiting for the dust to settle on these http://www.triumph.co.uk/australia/8278_8280.aspx (http://www.triumph.co.uk/australia/8278_8280.aspx) and I may be very tempted to add one to the stable. Touring / Adv riding has really taken my fancy of late.

Thanks Tri  :P Just another for me to consider!!  Luckily I'm not tall enough to ride most of these bikes - narrows the choices somewhat thankfully.

Haven't given up on Ducati just making sure I know what my options are.

Doc yes please, do let me know how you find it further down the (dirt) track.

Sorry I didn't get the humour in the comment between the devils and smiles.
I couldn't see why a monster was bought into the conversation when it was obviously about adv-touring bikes which a monster certainly is not. I've made no secret about my thoughts on buying a multi next. But because my monster is so good at many things the decision on a second bike has been long.
I too have been looking outside the 'faith' for a bike that does more things well than a couple of things really well.

has anyone looked at the KTM adventure ?

would be the sensible choice after ducati , ie large Vtwin

a couple of mates have owned them and raved non stop about them , 1 went cape york and back , other only sold his as gone to canda

I have ridden a rather old GS early model and later pre current , both rather weird and not really my cup of tea
Title: Re: Opp's
Post by: mattyvas on April 10, 2011, 02:00:35 AM
I haven't looked at them but I have heard that there spares/bling range is eye waveringly expensive even compared to Ducati or BMW.
I think it might be too focused a bike though compared to FS/GS bikes.
And I have to agree also that the GS has become far too big a bike for it's own good.

The GS bikes are intended as adventure tourers. Let's be clear about the touring bit - designed to cover a shitload of kilometres in comfort. The adventure bit is the terrain discussion - the 1200 GS's are really for fire-trails and not much else. The F650GS and F800GS are "more" enduro than the 1200GS, but are not truly functional dirt bikes. You can get anywhere in the world on a dirt bike, but your body might give up on you before the bike does. The GS's will get you almost anywhere and pretty much in comfort.  The DR650 is a great bike, but perhaps a bit more enduro than the 800GS.
Really just a case of looking at what you want to do with the bike. For touring, camping, 4WD tracks, then the 650GS/800GS are absolutely ideal.

Thats a beautifull example of a beautifull bike. I love the way the headers turn blue. Was that for sale on ebay about a year ago, the owner was in Perth but the bike was in Sydney ?

A friend of mine bought one new, about $3000 at the time and it came with a race kit, 40 tooth rear sprocket, 40mm dellorto's and the conti's. He also had a double seat caus we rode it up to Forster one weekend, about 800k round trip. I remember revving it out in 3rd an hitting 160kph as you hit 4th, with still 5th to go .WOW, Quite something in those days . A memorable ride, well it was the 70's an I still remember it !

thanks rendang..   nah, it wasn't off ebay.
It came in, in a box at work. Came from Darwin complete with wasp nest's in every oriface possible. The idea at the time was to rebuild it and use it as a test/showcase bike for the veetwo product. It was kinda my job to rebuild it when there was a quiet periods in the workshop (took about 2 yrs I think). I didn't rebuild the engine, one of the other guys did that,  but I put new guides and seats in the heads and rebuilt the crank. we sent out the painting and plating, and I pretty much did everyhing else. Had to make a lot of stuff... (yep, I had a good job)
Anyhow veetwo went all pear shaped and they decided to get rid of it. They had a guy lined up to buy it, but when he draged his feet I put my hand up. I was a bit stuned when they took my offer, because I had to come up with the fun tickets!
It lives inside and rarely gets ridden, I have it under historic club rego, cheaper, but you only ride on club rides.
Yeah,in the late seventies a lot of my mates back in Lithgow had Ducati's I had a kwaka z9!
swore... that one day I'll have one of them things!!   ;D

sorry bout threadjack Dock....

Can't be a threadjack ... he still hasn't said what he did.

For all we know he bought a 70s bevel ... which he may, or may not, have put a BMW badge and knobby tyres on.
