My brother just bought a new helmet and I asked why. Visually there is nothing wrong with his old helmet. He said that it was recommended that you replace helmets every 4-6 years + he wanted a new bucket [laugh].
Anybody able to confirm that this is true?
Most manufacturers recommend five years. On the other hand, I had an Arai (who also recommends five years) helmet that needed a part. Arai said the helmet needed to be returned to them for the (free) repair as long as the helmet was newer than nine years old. Track tech inspections generally enforce the five year rule. My opinion? Five years is a worse case scenario. Modify that by how much often the helmet was worn, sweated in, absorbed gasoline fumes etc and take it from there.
i've been told 4-6 too, and that's due to the EPS liner decomposing over time... basically, it's like having your helmet checked out after a bad drop. sure, you can prob use it, but until you have it double checked, then there is always a chance of it messing up when you want it to mess up the least.
Thanks for the confirmation. Looks like it's time to get a new brain bucket.
