Title: I'm wearing a strap-on.
Post by: Artful on April 20, 2011, 08:05:07 AM
Actually two of them.

Picked up T-Pro strap-on knee protectors for the days I commute to the office in khakis or jeans (hell yeah casual Friday, the opiate of the masses). I know I'm not the first person to have ordered them or even reviewed them, but dammit I'm impressed and I wanted to share.

First, they're extremely lightweight and comfortable, I could very easily forget I have them on. Because of the d3o armor they conform quite well when I flex my knee and don't give you the catcher's guard effect where they pop up over your knee. They also are the perfect length to fit with my Sidi B2s, they stop just above the top of my boot to give the entire front of my leg adequate protection.

I'll be riding with them on over lunch, I'll post riding impressions then.

i have the same, and i agree, it's great :)

but it's not the d30/sas-tec stuff, it's their own personal line called nitrex.  the d30 stuff is a bit more comfy, but the tpro stuff placed tops in every single comparison test i've seen.  havent seen a comparison to the d30 stuff yet though

Ah, I stand happily corrected. When I think flexible until impacted I think d30, didn't realize there was a difference.

What is your impression between the strap on models and the limb tubes they make?

Can't say really. I'd probably prefer the limb tube variety other than that I can take these on/off without removing my boots, and I'm not a small guy so the larger size of the strap-ons is supposed to fit a bit better.

I took a short ride out to grab lunch and was pretty impressed. Really just didn't notice them at all.

I am trying to decide between the two right now.  I have a pair of Vanson Jean Cut leather pants which are great for the abrasion but no allowance for armor.  Either of these would work pretty well I think.

i chose the strap on because i was worried that the limb tube might get hot during the summer... i know it's made from that wicking material, but the strap on looked like it would be better

Are you dragging a knee with those yet?

How thick are they?

Take your fingers, spread them about a half inch apart.

'Bout like that.

Did you compare them to the Icon Field Armor ?

I used them before I got my 1st pair of Dainese leathers... I never ride without leathers now.

Yeah, the Stryker stuff was second choice but it's pretty bulky so it wouldn't go under khakis or jeans. When I'm railing it it's track pants or bust, but for the commute and riding out for social stuff I prefer something a bit more low key but with good protection.

I didn't realize Stryker was in the Moto business now besides the medical devices.  :D

I use the limb-tube type.  Personally I found them to be more comfortable than the strap-on type.  I had both, and sold the strap-ons.  I have very large calves and found the strap-ons uncomfortable on the back of the leg.
I don't think they are noticeably hotter than the strap-ons, if it's hot enough to bother me, then it's too hot for me to wear anything for riding. ;)

i have the tube one from forcefield and love it.  I have tiny calves so it was bit hard to get it to stay up.  But i think it was because i was not pulling up the top way over the knee caps.  Anyhow, I stop using the icon knee armour.  I now never leave home without it.  I feel naked without the forcefield knee armour and back armour.  Saving up for under-armour (to replace the one i returned due to the stitch coming off within a week. Maybe the new style that ties is better).
