Well I finally got off my butt and ordered the Ryca (http://www.rycamotors.com/) kit for the Suzuki Savage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Boulevard_S40) that I bought. I'm in the production order and paid my first half of the payment.
Here's some before pics:

First step, go to Harbor Freight for a motorcycle stand. It's on sale!
Second step, start removing stuff.
I took off the tank and the rear wheel hub to send to Ryca.
So far:

Sah-weet! How did it ride before you took it apart? Are you still planning on the paint scheme we talked about? Good move on the stand. It's nice to have the bike up at an easy to reach height when you're doing that much work.
Scott
what does one do with that device?

Flog it!
I was out on it that morning. The 650 thumper had a nice bit of get up and go, about 33 HP from what I can find out. Low seat, forward controls, front brake is grab a handful and pray. Rear drum brake actually works better. I'm definately going to get a steel braided brake line for the front. The seat started to hurt my lower back after about 20 minutes. I can see why newbies get scared on a bike like this.
We will have to see how thing handles after it's all done.
I've got Lisa working on the decals for the tank, and I've found the paint color I want, now I just have to bring it all together.

If you tell them you're ordering more for established local club racers to create a race class I'm sure you could work a discount. C'mon, you need new things to crash anyway.

A couple of weeks or so. I got the email from them about a slot and called them up and talked to the man himself about what I wanted. So far they've been a pleasure to deal with.
From what I've read "the man" is pretty closely involved with this and wants the new owners to be successful. Here's wishing you good support the whole way through.

Whenever the folks at Ryca get it back to me.
I decided to take the engine out of the frame. It seemed the easiest way to clean up the frame and swing arm. There's quite a bit of road gunk, and what looks like dried clay or a thin wash of cement on the lower frame and swing arm. It also made it alot easier to make the needed cuts on the swing arm and frame and to clean those up. I'm probably going to get the frame painted a different color than black.

Swing arm:

Are the cuts just to remove tabs and the like that you'll no longer need?
Scott
On the swing arm, yes. I cut the motor mounts, tank mounts, & seat mounts today. [thumbsup]

Nice man! Hey, are the lower fork sliders at Ryca? If not, might be a good time to polish them. Polishing aluminum is easy but a little messy. It really gives a nice gleam to the bike. Maybe the engine side cases too. Unless you're going full on military and spraying the whole thing OD.
Scott
I wrapped the exhaust header today. [thumbsup]
Can't wait to see it!

?
Paint + threaded hole = that same screw won't fit until you clean the paint off the threads.
If you pulled a screw out of the frame during disassembly, it'd be a good idea to run it back into that hole before there's, like, an engine in the way.
No problem, none of the frame mounting holes are threaded, and the painter covered them up with masking tape before painting.
Party bonus. [thumbsup]

I'm sort of at an impasse right now. I'm waiting for some parts to get powder coated and a new set of tank mount grommets from the Suzuki dealer. I need both of the rubber tanks mounts grommets (only had one on the bike) so I can position the tank and line up the seat pan and side covers. Then I can drill the seat pan and line it up on the frame. I want to do that before I send the rest of the parts to the painter, because that is a two week wait for the parts to get painted.
On a good note, Lisa finished the graphic design for the decals, and I have a place lined up to make them for me. I will hopefully have the decals done before I send the rest of the parts to the painter.
Nice! Did you send in the tank? What did they do to it. Keep an eye on that tail light. I had one like it and it died in a few months on the Monster.

NOw to get the tank, seat pan & side panels aligned. THen I can send all the stuff off to the painter.
I took a long loop ride out to Vernonia and back today. I'm heading up to Cougar or thereabouts tomorrow with some other RE riders. I was thinking of you when I stopped at the Moto Guzzi dealer, they had a Savage and an S-40 for sale.
Oh, I also saw the CBR 250 in the flesh for the first time today. It's a nice little bike and fit me just fine, a little forward lean when you sit on it. The springs are way too soft for anyone over 120# but overall it's really well done. Then again, it is a Honda.
Scott
Well, I got the tank & seat fitted. I put on the shocks, rear set mounts, & rear sets.
Now to take the rest of the stuff that needs painting in to get painted.
Vik - How much does a powder coating on a frame run? Got some project ideas going through my head.
It's painted, not powder coated.
But I did get some other parts powder coated at brookerenterprises.com (http://brookerenterprises.com).
The price was very reasonable and they did a good job.

Really like the concept of this. Just wish they had other options on the tank. Instead of just modding the stocker they should offer other options. I like the shapes of the benji cafe racere bikes.
I bet if you talked to them they'd work with you. No reason you couldn't adapt another tank. I think their project is partly based on re-using as much of the original bike as possible.

I've been a bit busy this weekend. It was either work on the bike or got to PIR for European Bike Day. It was a tough choice, but the itch to wrench won't be denied.
I put on the fender, headlight, turn signals, exhaust, glued the side panels and glued taillight to the seat pan. I also did the wiring mods and changed the jetting on the carb.
Its about 95% done, now for that last fiddly 5%. :P

I just found out that the vacuum operated petcock on the S40 is a piece of crap and should be replaced by one from a Yamaha Raptor. :-\
I got one on order from eBay. [thumbsup]
I yanked all the electrical out of the CB and replaced it with my own wiring to create a total loss system. Battery, coils, plugs, and then an on/off switch. This allows me to bump start it, but means I need to leave it on a battery tender all the time. After putting it all back together, it was in pieces when I bought it, it started with three steps and a down shift. The only downfall was it jerked forward and the rear sets tore a hole in my bare calves... Was in shorts. Time to install the clutch cable... Oops.
Three day weekend. Are we going to see some progress pics?

I raced her this weekend, and I totally make slow look sexy. Oh, and it turns out that you need the carbs to stay on the bike to finish the race.
I hear they make bolts for that
Intake manifolds had to be shaved to fit the oversized carbs, then they were attached with tubes and hose clamps... Guess that didn't work. I am having custome intake manifolds molded now.

Krolik, where things at??? [popcorn]
I thought of you a few weekends ago. I started heading for Cougar but then decided to cross the river and went to Timberline lodge. Nice little ride. The north approach is a really nice ride up. The other way down was kinda boring, I'll go up and back on the more scenic north side next time.
On the last little 7 miles or so to the top my little Enfield single would only do 50mph wide open. There's just no air up there. Kinda funny, the bike is mapped to go all the way to 18,000 feet since the get ridden in the mountains in India so much. I believe it's the highest map for a production bike in the world, but I don't know if it would be much faster than walking at those altitudes :D
Looking forward to the completion of your new toy.

Dude, get it on the trickle charger.
It is.
QuoteSoon, I'm just going to come over and finish it for you.
Scott
Really?
Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Still at the shop, waiting on UPS to deliver the parts. Oh. the irony. ;D
It's ironical.
It's still in the shop, they're trying to chase down mysterious electrical problems. [bang]
It seems like about 1/3 of electrical problems are mysterious.
Last time I stopped by the shop, it was up on the lift. [thumbsup]
Wasn't it on the lift in your garage for months? Are you sure this is progress??? :-*
Now its on a lift in someone elses garage. That's progress, right? [laugh]
Touche!
Actual progress has been made. The mysterious electrical fault is no longer mysterious. [thumbsup]
What is the fault?
Apparently the factory ground wire connection was improperly routed to the starter circuit.
So what's left now?
I should get it back sometime this week.
Here's hoping there's a sunny day this week for you. So should we plan to make this year's New Year's day ride on singles?
Scott
That could be a possibility.
I got it back from the shop. [thumbsup] [Dolph]
Just a quick ride around, first impressions:
The seat is like sitting on a 2x4, but the bike is very narrow.
The brakes require a handfull to get any acton, the rear works better.
It handles nicely, fun to ride.
I have a few minor fit & finish items to get done, but its 98% done.
You're obviously lying, or there would be pictures. >:(

nuh uh
Okay I'll get some pics. >:(
You got a steel braided front brake line? If not get one. And whether you have one or not, bring it by and I'll get your front working better.
And congrats! Finally!
Scott
It's got a steel braided brake line, but the original front brakes were crap to begin with. The engine compression from the big ol' single is almost as good as the front brakes. [laugh]
Well, thanks to the hard working wrenches at G & H Cycles (http://gandhcycles.com/), easily Portland's 11th best motorcycle shop, the Smeshnoi Krolik is done. Mostly, as in how can projects like this ever really be finished.
Here's the pics:

That looks very nice [thumbsup]
Wow! That's cool. I don't know if it was worth the wait but it's cool ;) That bike looks way better as a cafe than it did as a cruiser and yours looks better than most Rycas I've seen. Love the flat paint and all the detail.
Scott
Nice Victor!
sweet bunny dude
Gotta keep the old pics on the same page for comparison. Looks really nice BTW.

Very nice! [thumbsup]
Just looking through the pics again, the transformation is amazing! I've got to go out and take some measurements off a Rebel one day. They're cheap and it's a parallel twin!
Scott
Thanks for sharing Kowlick.
[evil] bad azz!!
It is very cool to see such a transformation. You took a tired old cruiser and gave it new live as a really neat little cafe bike. [thumbsup]
So what does the Cyrillic script on the side of the tank say?
Silly Rabbit
Bmup! [laugh]
I am not sure how I missed this, but I need one of these..... 8)
