Title: Warm weather jacket
Post by: yellowjacket on June 14, 2008, 02:21:06 PM
For warmer weather (80*+) all street commuting, which jacket sounds better: a proforated black leather jacket with no armor OR a light texilte/mesh jacket with armor.  Also, im sure this has been discussed before, but which material is more durable textile or mesh?

im living in central coastal florida where its 100% humidity and 90+ degrees....
picked up a couple of these a few weeks ago....
http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=3&L2=10&L3=23&L4=&item=ASR_330518-10-SM_G&tier2=24
i also have a triumph leather perf'ed jacket as well....
textile is certainly cooler, but its still warm by any measure...
but id much rather have the armor than be cooler...
have a couple alpinestars jackets, leather and textile, love the construction and fit....
nevertheless, the textile is MUCH cooler than the leather...
mesh jackets just APPEAR flimsy to me, dont think they hold up to more than one down,
wheras these textiles seem a little heartier to me...
and theyve got ce approved armor, so im betting theyre a little more protectve than straight leather,
which is only good for abrasion protection...
go with the textile....
this ones REALLY well built.

I am really pleased with my Scorpion Cool Rod jacket.  Excellent fit and padding.  Shoulders and elbows are solid.  Mesh panels only.  Lets plenty of air in.  +1 zip in windproof liner for cool mornings.

I've never had a perf'd jacket until now.  We had a spot of 90F weather here in Seattle last week so I threw on my new hide (Icon Accelerant perf'd) and was pleasantly surprised.  I'm old school enough to think leather is an absolute necessity and don't trust anything else.  Having this jacket only confirms that for me.

Why limit your choice to leather without armor?   I've been wearing the fully perfed Vanson Sportrider with armor in temperatures up around 110 for the last few weeks.  I find it quite comfortable.  I'd never be comfortable in anything other than leather.

This is what I use in the west Texas heat:

Made out of Kevlar, more abrasion resistant than leather.

You can read about it here:  http://www.motoport.com/Page.Asp?Id=18

It's cooler than my perfed Spidi jacket.

This is the jacket that I wear during the summer: http://www.saltlakemotorsports.com/ducati-summer-tech-fabric-leather-jacket.html

I love it and I feel very safe in it...

Sort of thread jacking here, but instead of starting a new thread...
How hot is too hot for a non perfed, non vented leather jacket?

I am close to getting a new leather jacket and the one I like the looks of is not perfed and doesn't have venting. (A* 7-2)

Thanks

For me I would break out my non perfed jacket probably around the 50-55 degree range.  Anything above 60 degrees in a non perfed jacket would be pretty miserable.

I am thinking of going this route. (http://www.newenough.com/closeouts/bargain_basement/icon/pursuit_perforated_leather_motorcycle_jacket.html) Seems like a good deal.  [moto]

If your going to get a hot weather jacket and you dont want leather. Then mesh jacket in NON BLACK. if your going to get a black jacket, you might as well go for perf leather. Black absorbs a ridiculous amount of heat when you compare it to a whiter color.

I wear a Joe Rocket Phenoix mesh. Its all mesh, so its as much flow as you can go, padded and removable armor in shoulder elbows and back. However if you go down, this jacket will only work once.

I live in South Florida where 95 degree 100% humidity is the norm. You would be mad if you wore any type of leather, being perf or not. Mesh is a 1 crash jacket. I have a mesh JR in silver which I use when it gets really really hot. It's basically a way to hold the armor in place. I think textile would be second best if your talking about temp, followed by perf. I would only recommend mesh if you live in Florida or any tropical climate.

+ 1 million with the Cycleport gear.

I have the jacket (and pants) shown above and reckon they are actually cooler than just riding in a t-shirt. Probably because they are basically a kevlar mesh weave that keeps everything that could sweat off the skin.

Hope this helps

I wouldn't use a jacket unless it had armor in it. I just went down at about 35-40 MPH wearing a Joe Rocket 4.0 mesh jacket and the armor saved my elbow and who knows what else. The ashpalt actually ate through the shoulder area right below the armor giving me some road rash, but all in all it worked.

+1 on looking into armor-only options.

if your commute involves a snarl of traffic, even perf leather can get very, very warm vs. tex.

if you're moving along the whole way, you'll be surprised how cool fully perfed can be  [thumbsup]

thanks for the input, i ended getting a Hein Ger mesh jacket with armor and ditched my perf leather without the armor.  I still liked the airflow from perf leather but armor feels more comfortable for me.  maybe next season, i'll invest in a pefr leather with armor...

I bought the Joe Rocket Reactor 2.0 from New Enough, its a combination perf leather and mesh with armor. I love it. Any jacket will be hot in the south during the summer so ya just have to suck it up.

Nothing fancy but it has armor and it was like $100.  I did crash in it and it held up pretty well... just a few scuffs.

Anyway I don't need anything too fancy for extreme hot weather, I live in Wisconsin and we don't get too much. :P  Case in point it's only like 60 right now!

I like the gray and black color scheme, how does it fit? i usually wear a XL but most XL so far are a bit short for my torso...

they're supposed to be short for your torso, so that they don't bunch up when you sit on your bike.

I bought a large and it fits great. I am about 5'10" 225lbs. Every jacket I have had has ridden up in the back, I keep looking for riding pants that are comfortable and don't look to bad that I can zip to but no luck so far, oh well.

I liked the idea of a grey/black but in the picture of the way too kewl dude on the page it looked more silver to me and I didn't want that so I initially went with the red/black but it was back ordered so I ended up with black/black. Yeah I know in summer there could have been better choices but what can I say I am a slave to fashion.  ;D

Teknic Supervent Pro Jacket.

A little "stormtrooper-ish" but if offers the best protection i've seen in a mesh vented jacket.  It's my daily hot weather jacket.

The shoulder protection and elbow protection is really tuff stuff, knox armor throughout and a back protector of course.  Has a cool vent system molded into the tops of the shoulder armor too.  At speed, it cools REALLY well.
