Title: New from Greenfield, WI
Post by: pbfanatic410 on May 11, 2011, 08:17:27 AM
Hey All,

I just bought an '02 Monster 620 from a coworker.  It has some great mods already done to it (chopped brake & clutch levers, chopped seat & front fender, chopped exhaust, lowered gauges and dropped handlebars, to name a few) and I look to do more.  This is my first bike and I am in the middle of my Motorcycle Safety course, so I am anxious to start riding.  Give me a few weeks to get comfortable, and give me a call if you ever wanna ride in the Milwaukee area.

620 is a good bike. I started on one as well. Capable, but not so heavy or over powered that it's problematic for a new(er) rider.

Being an 02 you've got the nicer front brakes that 05+ 620 and 695 riders spend some cash to get. And you've got a steel tank - no crazy swelling tanks for you

One thing you'll want to check in with your coworker is the age of the cam belts. They are a 2 year of service life or 12k mile item. So it's quite possible they are due for a replace given they are over that 2 year limit.

Other questions you might pose are if they changes the final drive gearing. It's common, for a good reason, to change the final drive by reducing the size of the front sprocket (cheap and easy) by 1 tooth to 14, or increasing the rear (harder and requiers a new chain) by ~3 teeth. If not - you should look into it. That change helps a lot with making lower RPMs more usable. They bikes come geared overly tall from the factory. On a 620 the mathematical max speed with the stock gearing won't ever be hit, they run out of puff a bit north of 100mph - so you're not loosing anything in the change, and gaining a more useable power band.

Welcome fellow WI member!

Everyone loves pics so please post some when you can.
Also check out the local club board as well, I'm hoping to see a few ducs this summer around the area.
