Title: How labour intensive is it to take the engine out of an s4r?
Post by: cakeman on May 23, 2011, 01:05:04 AM
Im toying with the idea of taking the engine out (not me personally because im useless at that stuff), striping it so its ready to paint.

How many hours am i looking at for something like that?

While its out i might also get a rebuild as its got 40k on it.

Yea your most probably right but they left it sitting their for such a long time that the caked up crap has become part of the paint work, all the metal is tarnished etc etc. I took it out on the weekend but was lacking the confidence. We'll see how it goes

Yours is pristine compared to mine...... Maybe we can get a better deal if we get both done :)

Hey Cakeman
Sounds like you need to talk to the Teff man to advise you on some detailing.
Yer i know it would be nice to take the engine out and bring it back up to scratch, not worth it, :'(
But with a little TLC some VHT rattle can paint some preferd cleaning agents, a dremel, and a comfy seat an hour or so for a few weekends you can get the bike looking pretty good. :P
WTF 40k rebuild start thinking about that at 250k  :-X

Yeah mine must be on the shelf at 87K km too.  Looking at maybe a slight rebuild by the end of the year when it hits 100k and that's only a maybe according to Brad.

Your confidence isn't going to get better by having it off the road for another 3 months, you just have to ride it.

Mine is far from pristine, it looks good on the surface but just don't look too hard you might see some ugly road rash on the engine casing, some less than pristine radiator/oil cooler and plenty of other cosmetic lumps and bumps.
Hell I haven't even been able to commit to having it painted, because I couldn't be half bothered and just want to ride it hence the stickers and half arsed job and changing it's look.

Just ride it, clean it as you can and when it blows up or has a "Ducati" moment then fix it and keep riding.
If you really want a pristine bike rock up to a dealership and buy a newbie cause it might well be cheaper than paying pull it down for a spray/rebuild.

I have not done it on a monster but I got quite proficient at taking a v four motor out of my Honda VF1000. In the end I could do it in about two hours. I think the monster would be less as it should drop straight down. The v four had to be manipulated into the frame.

The worst bit is disconnecting everything first.

Good luck and don't forget to take photos,

The best kind, I'm trying to get mine there. Done 20k on it since it's been mine.

they're easy to pull apart, about 4 hours to disassemble it, about 6 to 7 to put it back together, you don't pull everything apart, you take the front end off in one piece, same with the swingarm. if you take the exhaust off first then use an engine stand to support the bike with a car jack stand under the front cylinder it's easy to remove the front end, swingarm assembly etc. with the bodywork and seat gone unplug and unziptie the wiring then the frame lifts off leaving the engine on the stands.
dunno about a rebuild after 40k! have you had a compression check done? it should do 3 times that mileage with good regular servicing.
