i go for baggage insurance via amex and rental car ins via amex as well.  if you get amex insurance dont let the rental car companies bullshit you and say "oh amex wont cover etc etc" its a crock of shit, amex covers everything.

+1.

If you have a Discover Card or Visa Signature card they cover everything as well.  Give them a call to confirm, the coverage is great  [thumbsup]

Cheers,
Adam

Your own auto insurance policy normally covers vehicles you rent. My does.

I always buy it - I've never had to use it.

The idea of traveling to your country with it's, ummm, different-to-Australia's healthcare system costs[1], without someone deep-pocketed to cover any required ambulance/hospital/medical/doctor/dental costs seems, ummm, unwise. Not having to worry about that is well worth the ~$120/yr I pay...

It also allows me to sit on the tarmac on the way home hoping the plane gets hijacked and I get to pocket the $25k/day hijacking bonus.

[1] Note: this is _not_ an invitation to start a political flamewar about the healthcare debate, OK?

IMHO it depends on the trip.  Are you planning a trip to the Caribbean or Outer Banks during hurricane season - get it! If you have ever had any type of health issues while travelling, read the fine print and make sure that anything that could possibly come up is covered.

My parents had a trip to Yellowstone planned for last summer - the hotel screwed up their reservation leaving them with nowhere to stay AND my father wasn't feeling up to the flights; it took a bit of work but all the costs were reimbursed within a couple months.

Always, always, always get it if you're riding bikes.  Always.

A good friend of mine high sided in France, and because he paid for his trip with points his AMEX insurance didn't cover it (vs. a purchase) so he spent 2+ months in a hotel in Nice as he couldn't fly due to injuries.  You can imagine the expense.  :-X

Adam
