Has anyone got any details on the least obtrusive method of taking the headlight cover off a 2010 M1100? I need to remove the stock indicators on the front, replacing them with the DP LED variety. They attach through the headlight cover and it needs to come off to gain entry to the wiring loom. Looking at the headlight assembly it appears that the speedo needs to come off as well, it appears to be one whole unit.
There are two screws into large rubber grommets at the back of the base of the headlight assembly which seem to be the prime candidates but it seems overkill to also remove the instrumentation just to take the headlight cover off to gain access to the indicator wiring underneath.
I've seen mention on other old threads of two screws that hold the cover on but I think they were for models previous to mine because my bike doesn't seem to have any visible screws on the exterior of the headlight cover.
Any help would be appreciated.
It's an easy job, but not as intuitive as you would expect.
If you are just adding indicators consider putting a towel or something on the front fender and you can reflect the headlight, facedown, onto it without undoing all the wiring.
Anyway. Start with removing the four Allen screws holding the bikini fairings onto the instrument gauges. They are to the left and right of the gauge cluster, as if you were looking at it from the saddle. Unfortunately you have to do this to create enough room to lift the headlight.
Next unplug the big wire connector Thingy from the back of the instrument cluster and pass it through the gap beneath. Bear in mind that this will reset your clock and trip meter ( but not odometer).
Loosen or remove the two nuts at the back if the headlight assembly, low down attaching to the triple clamp. They attach to two funny screws molded to rubber mounts on the back of the headlight.
Surprisingly, the whole headlight now just lifts up and forward. Those two nuts were all that held it on! Behind where the bikini fairing was are two rubber mounts that prongs on the top if the headlight simply slide into.
You can either undo all the wiring connections (keeping track of which is the left and which is the right indicator). Or pivot it down onto the front fender and work there.
Switching the indicators is easy once you have the headlight assembly off, the hardest part is tucking the resistors for the LEDs out of the way, but there is a fair amount of space.
Putting it back on is the opposite of above. Just be careful not to let any of the wires get caught against the steering column and to remember to attach the grounding plate to the left nut when you re-attach it.

I would post photos, but am overseas (Taiwan, where it is hard to find anything over 150cc, let alone a Duke, to photograph). Once you take the bikini fairing off it all becomes pretty obvious and I don't see any major ways to screw up, beyond reversing the indicators. The wires are labelled SX and DX, but I forget which is Italian for left (I think it is SX - for sinister) and which is for right.

StephenC, I see you installed the DP Tail Tidy, can you have a look at my other thread in this forum on the DP Tail kit and verify that my piccies match your install because my documentation pictures were really crap quality and I had to guess some bits.

I did the front indicators today StephenC, using your instructions for getting the headlight assembly off. They were very good instructions and it only took me an hour and that was taking it slow so I didn't screw up. Thanks a bunch [thumbsup]
I did notice afterwards that the LED indicators flash at a faster rate than the bulb variety, I imagine this is due to the the resistors that came with the LED's being of a lower resistance than the stock bulbs. It's not too fast, i.e. strobing, I'd say maybe a third faster, an extra cycle a second which seems ok. They are quite bright too, so no-ones going to miss them.
I'm glad to have helped. I'm not sure about the flash rate issue, but it is likely you are right and it is related to the resistors.
