That's right. Your couch, Your beer, i'm stopping by.
As Part 2 (Part1 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=34037.0)) of my retirement travels I'm going to take a tour of the US. So far the plan is to go North, East, South, then West. Stopping along major monuments, tourists attractions, National parks along the way. And also visiting the members of the DMF, mainly cause i don't believe you people actually exist. So if your willing to open your front door or clear some camping space in the back yard ill stop by. Or no room to host, lets meet at your favorite dive bar. [drink] No real plans for destinations just may connect the dots of DMF'ers and see whats in between. Heading North first from San Francisco so Oregon and Washington DMF'ers speak up. Jbubble, Mother looking at you first. May pop into Canada for a few days then drop back to the states.
Post up or PM if you want to meet up or join in part of the ride. Won't be on a Duc so be be surprised, this would my practice tour for Part 3 South America.
Who's in? [cheeky] Hopefully summer will get here so i don't freeze my ass off on the ride.

See ya soon my friend! [thumbsup]
oh absolutely
your route literally passes our hovel
when can we expect you?
we are closing on a real house in the next 4 weeks so if you get here before then it may be the dive bar and a couch for you
anytime in July and still a couch but in a house big enough to change your mind in without a prybar

You should plan on the east coast DIMBY in August. If you can't make it then there's always a spot here for a DMFer.
Looks like you're planning on hitting central NH.
If you get a bit farther North in Wisconsin, we have plenty of room and I don't need much of an excuse to do some pretty ok cooking. Welcome!
I like how it looks like you let a kid with a crayon loose on that map of the US. [thumbsup]
Bed space and a hot shower available in Fort Collins, CO. [beer]
a time framework might help some in this regard...some members with families may have vacations and so forth to contend with and whatnot...
congrats on the retirement BTW!!!
You've got a place to crash in Denver, CO.
[thumbsup]

If you come by Columbus (You're route has you doing mostly northern oh which is really boring) you welcome to stay with me and we could hit up southern oh which has some really great roads!

The best i can do is about a weeks notice, just trying to do my best to "wing it" on this trip. Mostly for me, i tend to get goal oriented if there is a plan and a goal in mind. So if i dont make any specific goals, it gives me the mental freedom to stop for whatever reason and enjoy where im at.
Guess i should have put "retirement" in quotes [cheeky] I'm only 33 and don't feel like working right now, so travel it is.

Fellow DMFers--
As someone who has known DanTheMan for quite some time now, has drank with him, raced with him, crashed with (i.e. into) him, slept with him (uh, really?), lemme share with y'all what kind of a guy he is . . . . If DanTheMan says he needs a place to crash, RUN THE make the beast with two backs AWAY!!!!!!!! It's like the Mongol horde rollin' into town. Take your women and children and run for the hills.
Have a good trip, DTM. [thumbsup] [Dolph]
P.S. Dan, you sure gonna be able to fit your entire collection of human ears in those saddle bags? ;D
You've got a place to stay and drink in Baltimore, MD. I'll rally the troops and we'll turn it into one hell of a bash. I'll warn you though, the last DMF guys that came through here got caught in a tornado. Just sayin.
I'm in Palm Beach, but not sure if I'll be here by the time you make it to Florida.
If Phase 3 covers Chile, then you'll have a place to rash there as long as I don't have other people visitng at the time.
In Dallas, place to stay here as well. BTW reconsider going through Eureka Springs, AR.
Looks like your kid drew a line thru northern VT.
I'm in Smugglers Notch, just over the mtn from Stowe.
Last 2 weeks in August I'm unavailable. Otherwise there's a room available.
I'm about 3hrs west of DP, if he actually exists, I've been thru central NH and didn't see him.
Safe travels!

Plenty of room here.
Enjoy the journey.
I guess I should specify town, then. PM Sent.
ABQ, NM or you mentioned Ouray CO in the 2nd wk of August...
Will be great to see you again!
Looks like coastal NC is off your to do list. If that changes I am just north of Wilmington and you are welcome here.
I'm an hour and a half or so Northwest of IZ and about 3,000 feet higher in elevation (no, that's not a hobbit joke). Even better, riding up through the mountains to Prescott from Phoenix beats the living snot out of super-slabbing it. You're welcome to our guest room if you end up not wanting to stay in PHX, but I'll gladly show you the fun routes through here from A to B, wherever those happen to be; PM sent with contact info.
Enjoy the trip [thumbsup]
If there's a DMF meetup in the DC area I'm in and I can also offer a place to stay in Annandale VA (~7 miles outside DC).
I will also be able to offer a DC based room iffin' you need.

DTM, if you're in Bangor at the end of August (sounds like that'll fit your timeline based on you tryin' to make DIMBY), the Blonde and I and the spawn are going to be about 90 mins away from Bangor at the Canada/Maine border from Aug. 16-30. Also since ya like fishin', for part of that time we may be about 4 hours north in the woods in Canada on a salmon river. Dirt road access and (literal) log cabin. It may not be season, but there's huntin' too. There's more than enough room for ya in both places. I can guarantee ya a place to sleep, and a buncha salmon, moose, lobster and beer.
Put it on your map. [thumbsup] [Dolph]
If you want to see the Alamo, you have a room, private bath, garage, complete shop full of tools to conduct repairs and your own private 1.3 mile 13 turn road course. . Hit me up if you make it to San Antonio, TX.

Looks like you're passing through western NC. That's my playground, and we've got a spare bedroom. We are about two hours (at most) east of Deals Gap, about 30 minutes west of Asheville, NC. There is also a GREAT section of the Blue Ridge Parkway just about 20 minutes away.

We might have a couch open depending on when you arrive in Colorado Springs assuming your coming here, who wouldn't (we should ride Pikes Peak). Hit me up then.
You have a house with a garage and tools in Houston. You lucky make the beast with two backser, you're doing exactly what i had planned to do this summer. Best of luck!

If you aren't too set in your planned route, I have a suggestion. When you hit Detroit, cross the border and ride the north shore of lake erie and cross back over at Niagara falls. If you do, I have a small cottage on the north shore of the lake in a little fishing town called 'Port Dover'. You would be more than welcome to crash out there for a few days. There's a couple of great taverns.
Yeah but then that would screw those of us on the south shore that would like to see DTM

I'm pretty sure that's the same night your wife saw my balls. I don't think I ever apologized. Sorry about that.
sac
yup.
no worries, she saw more balls that night than in 10 years as an operating room nurse.
we're even...your wife drunkenly tried to crawl in bed with the two of us.
my wife said 'wrong room, sweetie' and steered her down the hall.
I have never forgiven her
Anyone have any on-moto contact info for DtM?

When you hit Detroit, cross the border and ride the north shore of lake erie and cross back over at Niagara falls. If you do, I have a small cottage on the north shore of the lake in a little fishing town called 'Port Dover'. You would be more than welcome to crash out there for a few days. There's a couple of great taverns.
Hey Pitbull, if the Man comes around the Ontario way, I'll meet you guys up in Dover. We can have a Canadian Monster escort to the Falls.
Sucky we couldn't catch up this week. Safe travels. And remember, 2 in the pink, 1 in the stink. [coffee]

Kids are so reserved these days.

I intentionally left with a tire that had a very limited lifespan. I needed to test myself to see if i could do it. i was planing on make it to Portland before attempting it (incase shit goes wrong), but the tire gods had other plans. the end of day 2 the cords were showing so it had to be done at the campsite. Had the tire with me and all the tools.

Danno, is your current thinkin' that you'll hit New England earlier than mid-August? I was hopin' to catch up with you in Maine or Canada, and have you cook me 8 lbs of ribs til I puke.
This is my projected path of destruction. Ill be the the NE area early august and i have no pressing issue to make it home, just need a place to kill a week or two to still be in the area. Love to make dimby and meet you to ruin your family vacation, just need a place to hide out for a weeks or so.
Everything subject to change, ill have a better idea in the next few days when i get some time to look at things on the map and people's locations

I've made it abundantly clear to my neighbors that if they come onto my property, or talk to me or my wife for any reason whatsoever they will be beaten to death with a shovel and their remains will be eaten by three large dogs. So no, they haven't brought it up.

your colors are really punchy...are you getting that in-camera, or are you ratcheting them up in post?
(or are you shooting through your polarized sunglass lens?)
I'm just above the 'M' in Vermont, on your map. I'm iffy this weekend, but I might be here.
Try to get lost in Adirondack Park.
A ferry ride across Lake Champlain would make stopping a no-brainer. .
I can give you the directions I used to not locate Nate.

a slight few are "as is" from camera, the others i usually just use the "enhance" button on iphoto unless it looks too unreal. A couple of these are the HDR photos.

Cool. My old stomping grounds.
If you have the time, avoid the superslab nd instead take rt 100 down VT to Rt 8 into North Adams. From there take Rt 2 across MA to Boston.
if you make it to Bangor Maine in the next couple weeks we have room..
In new jersey now for a couple of weeks. Going to make a few runs to NYC, Philly, DC and what ever else is in the area.

For DTM, this is just another short trip.
I did the NY trip a couple of summers ago.. not on a motorcycle unfortunately.. but flew to NYC then rented a car, drove down to DC, then back up to Boston, then over to Niagara Falls which was beyond incredible, especially looking up from the Maid of the Mist. Then drove to Cooperstown to see Rickey Henderson inducted into the HOF. From there back to NYC & flew back home to Cali. It was 10 days of awesomeness.
But you did inspire me, & again unfortunately it won't be on a motorcycle, but Labor Day week I'm roadtripping it to Yellowstone & over to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore. :)
don't know your plans in Maine and Canada, shelter in the Bangor area is available..
if needed from hurricane Irene.

make the beast with two backs the 1, at least that far north. It's 2 lanes through every podunk bullshit town between Calais and Key West.
Head west on Rt 9 to Bangor (55 (75!) mph sweepers!) and then go from there.
Honestly, I-95 from Bangor to Augusta is not that bad.
If you REALLY have your heart set on Rt 1, pick it up in Bucksport, just south of Bangor. You'll get to see the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory and then continue to make your way south.
fantastic pictures Dan.
enjoy the cabot trail and I hope you post some pics from it, cause if your pics so far are any indication, you will do a great job of capturing the essence of it.

THIS.
DTM, there will be no "banzai back to jersey" if you take the [east coast] 1.
What you'll have is plenty of slow moving traffic and a plethora of red lights.

yes rt 9 from Calais to Bangor, if you want to make good time. it's kinda fun at speeds that aren't posted.
there's another road from Princeton to Milford thats dirt all the way 70mi or so, thats a blast also. (not recommended tho
logging trucks)
rt 6 from Vanceboro to Lincoln, rt 155 Lincoln to Bradford, rt 221 Bradford to rt 15 Glenburn. rt 15 to Bangor.
all good riding roads in various conditions. some have heavy logging traffic.
I was stuck at my farm house in east TX for the last two days waiting for the AC repair man to show up. It was only 102-103 outside and 95+ inside. Brrrrr... [bang] [laugh] Anyway, I was stuck watching the Weather Channel for hours on end and I wish all my DMF friends on the east coast all the best. Sounds like hurricane Irene is going to kick your ass! Hope Dan The Man and everyone else makes it out OK. Sounds really bad. Everyone please take care, make emergency plans and don't take it as a joke. It isn't. >:(
Waaay too many posts without any hint of windchimes. >:(
So, the only way to repent is to get video of the chimes blowing sideways in the hurricane.

Well finally made ot back to the east coast. Its been about 14 years since I've spent any time here other than layovers to Europe. Again here, retracing some steps our family had during some long summer road trips across the US. Stopping by Niagra Falls, Boston, New York, DC. But the part i was looking forward to was riding through the back roads of upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and as plans changed, to the far reaches on Nova Scotia.
Being the birthplace of a nation, you quickly get inundated by American history. Seems like the US has museums, like the rest of the world has temples, shrines and churches. After a while they all look the same. Moving on... New York was amazing. I was genuinely excited when i stepped out of the first time to the light of then big city. Everything seem just like it would in the movies. All the buildings are perfectly aligned. As you look down a street they disappear into the horizon in a perfect line. Walked around NY for a few days taking in a Broadway musical and visiting all the major sites. Hopped up to New Hampshire, Maine, DC and Canada to visit some of my fellow DMF's. Then rode out to the end of the earth, or at least as far east as i could go on the bike. Had some long nights camping with wind and rain storms so i gave up on hanging around the area and exploring. Also Hurricane Irene was coming our direction so i want to get back to a safe location before she arrived.

I know who does that, take a motorcycle trip around the US and then a 2 week vacation to south america in the middle of it. My friend was visiting his brother in Ecuador so i decided to tag along to check it out. More to come, just thought i throw up the shot of the equator.

Well getting close to the end, time was running out so i had to ride hard back across the states. 2,500 miles in 5 days. Now in the great southwest and heading home but still have some good spots to hit before that. Mesa Verde, 4 Corners, Monument NP, Zion NP, VEGAS! Death Valley, and Sequoia NP. Here is from the trip across and some time in ABQ.
On the Blue Ridge Parkway, just 2-3 weeks too soon for the color change, but got a little patch.

In Fresno. Ran out of time and had to get home.
Ok finally home and got the last round of pics up. But first thanks to all the DMF'ers that offered places for me to crash. Sorry if i wasn't able to make it. There are still a lot of places i wanted to visit, but time ran out on me. Thanks to all for route advice and positive comments along the way.
And special thanks to those that i did end up staying with, thank you for opening your homes and giving me a comfy place to rest my head for the night, and food and booze. [drink]

Well i hope i inspired at least one of you to go out and make that trip or dream you've always wanted come true. Here is just an example of what the US has to offer so go out and see it. In case you missed my Asia tour go check out my blog www.100kilometersandrunnin.wordpress.com (http://www.100kilometersandrunnin.wordpress.com) and start from Jan 2010. I guess this is officially the end of part 2 of 3. Part 3 will be a ride through South America: Ushuaia, Argentina back to California. For now its back to the Philippines for me to kite-surf and be a beach bum for the next 7-10 months.
Until next time... Ride Fast, Take Chances.

You really want to go to the Philipines with this guy?
[cheeky]
It was an absolute pleasure shooting the bull over beers in DC, shame you didn't get to see the finer points of Baltimore but life (and weather) happens. You definitely gave me the motivation I needed to find a way to make this happen in the near future. Now to find a dual sport that will haul my ass around.

I've made it abundantly clear to my neighbors that if they come onto my property, or talk to me or my wife for any reason whatsoever they will be beaten to death with a shovel and their remains will be eaten by three large dogs. So no, they haven't brought it up.

Sac, if your ever in my neck of the woods I have a couple of neighbors I'd like you to set straight for me. [clap]

Awesome adventure you had Dan and the pictures are fantastic. You should print out a bunch and frame 'em. You seem to have a great eye for photography and they would be an excellent reminder of your trip hung up around your place.

Canon S90.
A lot of it is being right place right time and from there is just creative cropping once on the cpu. I do some editing with color etc. and if its a shot i really like ill take more time to make the shot "work" . But sometime theres nothing you can do, (or above my cpu editing skill set) Some days ill take 100+ photos, by the time i crop edit i'll have about 10-20 photos that i like and 3 that ill post up here... so law of percentages....For the most part i try to make the photos look like the way i remember and try to not over do it. With something simple as saturation you can make everything look really vibrant but i try no to over do it to the point it looks fake, but more how i visualized it.
Oh and take the camera off of AUTO, use P, learn the settings and play with them. I never shot with a flash and a simple tripod goes a long way with low light shots.
im driving through fresnow right.....now...
id wave dtm but i have no idea which direction to wave in :)

And that's just a taste. I loved Quito when I was working there. Latin America offers tons of fun outside of Mexico. Thanks Dan for showing that on video. You'll be able to meet with a few of us when you decide to head down here on your next adventure.
