Title: Best Mesh Jacket?
Post by: NateNewThread on June 11, 2011, 08:49:13 PM
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/Alucardbomb/ducati-twin-black-leather-jacket-2011-large.jpg)

Currently this is the jacket that I am using and it gets WAY too hot. Is there a reputable dealer that sells good quality, not too expensive mesh jackets? My main concern is good airflow to keep me cool.

Look at jackets that are half and half too.  I hated my texture jacket by Alpinestars.  My current Ducati jacket is mostly leather with textile on the front.  Breaths very well.

His e a dainese 'shotgun' which is great. Dainese made the jacket you posted, so if you like the quality there you'll probably like the shotgun. There's some pretty detailed discussion on here about that model - just run a search

Two key points for that jacket:
Buy one size smaller than you'd expect. It's got stretch materials a plenty
Check eBay for them. They can be found under $200 from time to time

Tourmaster Intake, similar to the A* above, full mesh, tough
To breath better. Plus wind/rain layer and a comfortable
quilted liner. All assembled good 40F-75F, mesh alone above
that.

that Astars is SEXY!

I have the RevIt Air and it's perfect. Sadly, I bought one when they first came out, so it's the ugly red and gray aesthetic. The newer ones look much better, but for hot days the functionality cannot be beaten (in my LIMITED experience).

I have the a-stars verona air

http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/alpinestars-verona-air-jacket-2011 (http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/alpinestars-verona-air-jacket-2011)

it has a ton of mesh (even though it doesn't look like it in the pics), flows a lot of air and seems really well made. The mesh is a little smaller and tighter than some jackets I've worn in the past so when its 80+ sitting in traffic gets a little warm, but once you start moving you cool off quick.

I added the dainese air shied g back protector which fits perfectly and due to its design doesn't get hot either

http://www.revzilla.com/product/dainese-air-shield-g-back-protector (http://www.revzilla.com/product/dainese-air-shield-g-back-protector)

together they make a great summer textile jacket

I picked up a Cortech GX Air Series 2 and love it.  It's mesh all over but has leather/armor in the elbows, shoulders and back.  It breathes incredibly well.  The only spot that really gets on me is the back where they have the padding.

+1 on the Cortech.

it also comes with the "modular" liner system from Tourmaster.

I have the Flex Series 2 and the mesh only breathes a TON.  One of my favorite things about this jacket is the rain liner zips outside the mesh as an outer shell.  This is much more comfortable than the plastic feeling interior liners.

I just got a Tiezms leather-mesh jacket - its really just an all-leather jacket with extra perforation as compared to a typical perf leather jacket.  Haven't ridden with it yet (Mr. Fed Ex dropped it off last night - wore the textile stuff to work today).  I think it'll be not much hotter than a textile mesh like my joe rocket phonex.

Motoport sells a mesh kevlar jacket that's darn near bomb proof.  Rather poor design/fit/finish though, but if I had to crash in a mesh textile there's none I'd rather do it in.

All the jackets posted will work well for you, if you decide on a jacket, make sure you get one with a wind proof/ waterproof liner so you can get the most use out of it. I've owned the Rev'it jacket posted here and liked it a lot, just no way to zip it to riding pants. I'm wearing this  Dainese shotgun jacket in red now, but no liner so I had to purchase one separately .

This is a new one and also looks good and it has a removable liner, all these jackets need  back protection added.  [thumbsup]

the rev'it air has a 7 inch zip in the back for zipping into pants.  not sure what other brands it zips into, but it does zip perfectly into my rev'it mistral pants.

You are correct, I wore the air and mistral pants also. The Dainese air has no zipper connection. Dainese  uses it's own, small zippers that only connect to Dainese gear.

The RevIt also has a "fight strap" loop to hook onto a belt of a non-zip pant (like my a* leather pants). I like that feature. It's nowhere near as good as a zip, but it's convenient for when that's not available.

I recently picked up one by Olympia Motorsports. Great jacket with two liners, one waterproof, one quilted. The quilted is designed to also wear by itself when removed, which comes in handy. Tons of handy pockets and fitment adjusters, plus zipper connection for pants:

the bmw airflow 4 jacket, its expensive, i dont' have it, it fits me like a glove and it flows a ton of air if its anything like the old airflow jackets.

I use the bmw jacket that is neon high viz yellow and grey with a removable insulating waterproof liner, with the liner out its a great high viz mesh jacket with it in you can use it over the winter with creative layering.

I've been wearing the leather mesh jacket for a bit. It flows air really well.  I'd say that for speeds 20mph and up its just as cool as my joe rocket phoneix.  Below that the phoneix might flow a little more air and be cooler.

This is what I use.  Broke it out the other day for the first time in ages.  Felt good in the heat once I got to speed.

Works okay and fits me fine; just wish it had some pockets.

Update on the leather mesh jacket, its noticeably hotter than a textile mesh when its really hot and humid out (which it was last week).  Still tollerable, just a bit hotter, but we are talking something getting close to 100F and 80% humidity I'd guess.

Probably not the best overall, but the Phoenix jacket has great airflow, decent windproof liner, basic protection for under $150.

I'll give a +1 to Olympia.  My jacket is the Olympia Viper: http://www.olympiamotosports.com/viper/viper.htm. (http://www.olympiamotosports.com/viper/viper.htm.)  It comes with a rain and warm weather liner.  I've used it in temperatures ranging from 15 degrees to 110 degrees (thank you DFW [bang]).  I've been drenched in what might was well be labeled a monsoon, and have ridden to Austin three times in it this past summer.

I honestly have no complaints.  Excellent airflow when you just wear the shell.  Excellent protection from rain when you get dumped on.  And excellent heat retention when you're slogging through the winter.

A MASSIVE advantage of Olympia gear is the 100% Nylon outer shell.  In other words, there is NO Polyester on the outside of the jacket.  Nylon (Cordura is the trade name), withstands abrasion much more than Polyester.  Polyester is essentially plastic, and my guess is it melts just like plastic in a high friction situation.  There are a few manufacturers that will advertise Cordura being used in the 'high impact' areas.  While this is better than nothing, Olympia doesn't skimp on the good stuff.

Other pluses include 3M reflective piping throughout the jacket, a 7" zipper on the back that actually comes with the other half (I had this sewn into a pair of Dainese air glides), and a belt loop for when you're wearing riding pants with no zipper.  The thing has more pockets than I could ever fill, and pretty much doubles as an organizer with all of its storage.

Overall, I am right pleased with my Viper jacket.  No, it doesn't have the badass style of other makes (though it's not too dorky...I hope :P), but it makes up for that in functionality, versatility, and comfort.  Just look how make the beast with two backsing COOL this guy looks in it! [roll]

Scorpion Cool Rod in white... I got it in a winter sale for under $100 a couple years ago and it's worked out great for me.  Vented like crazy, waterproof liner (also handy in cooler temps if the sun starts going down), removeable CE in elbows and shoulders, decent pockets.  Cheesy lettering across the chest, but at least it doesn't have any ridiculous Jersey Shore / Ed Hardy dragons on the back like a lot of Scorpion's gear does.

I've washed it once to get the bugs off it and it held up fine.  I've also recently had a low-speed spill in it and both the jacket and I held up well.  The back protector is a crappy piece of packing foam and worthy of an upgrade, but that's really my only complaint.

+1.  Picked up the Rev'it Air this Summer and it's great.  The euro cut really fits me well.  Well designed and made, styling is great.  on the other hand, in the Cortech air, the cut is too loose and the armors move all around me.
