Title: Should we go for a ride? Saturday 6th August, now with Carbon Tax for Ducmonrob
Post by: mattyvas on July 03, 2011, 02:27:56 AM
So Sydney folk should we go for a ride?
Time we went to see Claudio at the Blue Tounge in The Hunter Valley.
I think he has been missing out patronage this year.

So the first weekend of August.
What's say you?

We will be able to check out the new half way house, Grey gum cafe on the Putty road. 86klm from Windsor, not sure if they have fuel will have to check :)

They have been developing that place for a while, but I don't think fuel is on the agenda at the moment.

I did scoff down a very nice caramel sticky date pudding, hot with chocolate sauce, there a few weeks ago, but don't think they have fuel.

The dogs will be in the snow that weekend .

But my prediction is rain that weekend so if you brought it forward to
July 31 I can personally guarantee a mild sunny day..........................

Course, but there won't be any dirty stuff unless you feel like riding on the soft shoulder up the Putty Road.

After having a spin the other day I can see how you would be doing that after a long day.
You could eat up so many k's on that thing yawning would be easy after having spent a day in the saddle.

Oh yes, probably, possibly, weather permitting. Just had to check dates as I'm pruning pino grape vines the weekend prior. Speaking of which, if anyone has had life long ambition re grape pruning then now is your chance ! Just a short drive down south to the Strathbogies. Back to the topic, looking forward to touching bases again with Claudio. Found his web address so knowing me anything could happen there. !

Good question Brian, I'll investigate for all of us. And I'll go fix the bobo.  :-[

Looking at the site and reading the details I'd say that the donations go to the Cancer Council and not to the family.
I'll try to get in touch with Rob direct and confirm it.

Good question Brian, the way I understand it is that the family has been through hell and back with the help and support from the cancer council, so this is their way of putting something back into an organisation that has supported them.

By the way Rob has lost his bloody password and cant log on to the DMF so he cannot tell you exactly where he's at at the moment.

If you click on the link in my 'other' post it will show how you can make a donation into Rob's team, even if its only $5 and thats tax deductable, end thread jack.

Controversial Reverse Putty Option:

http://bit.ly/reverseputty (http://bit.ly/reverseputty)

Putty can be shitty and cold in the mornings. The 10 Mile twisty bit is still damp if you hit it at 10:00am. To avoid this we could potentially do Putty backwards. By the time you hit the 10 mile and the good twisty bits it will be warm and dry This lets Matty have his 'take it from behind option" as well - which I applaude

Start on the Old Road early, hit it hard with minimal stops to Wollombi for a quick coffee, on across the 200ms of dirt road* back onto freshly sealed tar roads to Broke for a quick refuel. Then, across Milbrodale Road, down the awesome 10 Mile twisty section of Putty Road, stop at HalfWay House for something for lunch, then onto Colo Heights for Fuel for the Testrastrettas and on down to Windsor then make our separate ways. If we don't dawdle we can be back at Windsor by about 2:30PM, so it doesn't have to be a loooooooooooooong day. We just need to ride smart big group styles and we *need* to depart Bow wow wow @ 8:30 on the dot.

Depart 8:30am          Berowra -> Broke:       130Kms (Fuel)                      ~2 hours riding, stop at Wollombi for a quick coffee (~1hour for a coffee break, regrouping and refueling)
Depart 11:30am        Broke -> Colo Heights: 125Kms (Fuel)                      ~2 hours riding, stop at halfway for something for lunch  (~ 1hour for lunch, regrouping)
Depart 2:30pm          Colo Heights -> Windsor 35Kms                               ~30 min to Windsor, then choose your own adventure home (M4/M2/Galston Gorge/whatevs)

It can be done heaps quicker than the predicted stops. I am building in loads of time for straggling and so BrianW can polish his bike and stuff.

* It's really not that bad as far as dirt roads go. I will make the beast with two backsing push your bike if along if you don't want to ride it - but don't say you were not warned.

Controversial Reverse Putty Option:

I am in no position to throw my weight around but I think it is a great idea ... just as Matty started this thread I was going to suggest a shorter, end of winter ride - due to the shorter days, colder starts and green roads.

By taking the Calga exit from the Old Road you are avoiding the most fun (but early morning treachery) at the end. Also it gives you a bit more flexibility on the north end of the Putty ... especially for the more 'spirited' riders. You could make a 'sighting' run down through the fun bit ... and depending on time and fuel issues re-trace your tyre tracks. Because lets face it most of the south part of the Putty is ... ummm ... long.

Oh and I will leave the dirt argument alone. The amount bridge works they have been doing in the area (removing the old timber bridges) leaves me hopeful that someone will finally take responsibility for that part of the road ... and fix it.

But like I said I am not really in a position to comment.

Hey Mark..........whether you are on the ride or not, your comments are always appreciated, read, plus taken into account mate........!  Tis a dam pity though that you both can't make it.
Am pretty sure though that Rob S has accepted your role bringing up the rear. Well, if he hasn't, then he will be aware of it by now cos i am MV's sargeant of arms for the day  ...! self appointed of course       Actually, I think it was Des who told me that Rob likes it up the......let me please re-phrase this and say he likes the position there, at the "back öf the pack".... [thumbsup].....secrets safe with me guys

Quotejust as Matty started this thread I was going to suggest a shorter, end of winter ride - due to the shorter days, colder starts and green roads.

Here's a REALLY, REALLY crazy idea........

Why not have more than just one ride over the next few weeks..................?

Man, I shot out to Wollombi last Sat morning & yes, it was bloody cold, but what a day!!! I was there by 8.30am, so no issues with an early start.

If you can pick a week without rain (like the last couple) the days are brilliant for a ride.
So its a little cooler - Rug up. So the shaded bendy bits are perhaps not as great as mid summer - take it a little easier.

Not sure about everyone else, but one of the great things I love about the bike is just being out and enjoying the ride & great company. I'll go as hard as anyone else, when the conditions permit, but the 'having fun' factor is primary in winter for me.

just my 2 cent's.......

Fine idea by me Craigo.
I much prefer the Putty heading into Windsor. Let's see what the group size is on the day.
If we approach 20 people like we have of late then we all know there will be a reasonable amount of time getting people back together at stops.

That said if we spend less time chin wagging at smaller stops we can have more time at lunch at the new halfway house on the putty road.

And Dan T, there are always people out riding most weekends. Not always does it get advertised here due to various reasons.
Leaving at your usual times that we have seen isn't possible for a ride such as this as people come from many parts of the city and far beyond for others so a 7-7:30 depart can mean a 5:30 start for some which just isn't fair, cause who wants to be up at that time in winter!

So an 8:30 depart is fine from Berowra to give us more time up our sleeve for the day.

Hi Matt, I understand completely!! Let's be honest, not everyone is as looney as me with the early morning starts. Even I was having a go at myself for being stupid when I rode into the valley on the approach to Wollombi last week & the whole place was completely white! I've never seen frost so think, you'd have thought it had snowed!

I guess rather than suggesting an earlier kick off, I was trying to say that even in the earlier hours, the roads are still fine through the twisties, as long as you ride to the conditions.

I'm happy to tag along with whatever happens, but did plan on the original direction. I have to end up in the Central Coast at the end of the day, so if a reverse run is in order, I may have to bail after Wollombi.

I think the amount of bikes out might scare the Bavarian off the tar top and back to the dirty stuff.
Sure we can get together for a Thursday night coffee chat the week before.

That's a good option, the Craigo up the old road to Wollombi round to Broke and then to new cafe along the Putty.

With the possibility of so many people coming, up to 20 if all the pencils attend a simple run up the Putty and back makes it very very easy with no corners, well none that take you off the single road.

Let's see how many actually say they are coming and choose the direction from there.

Put me down in Ink Matty.....even break out the Highlighter

Fresh Rubber scrubbed in on a leisurely trip up to Woolambi today, and a bit of recon for next weekend

So, hopefully there is Fuel in Broke. It would be a long push to Colo Heights for the S4rs's

Good to meet Dan_T today on the Ol' Rd and bumping into AndreJ for a quick run up to the slab

Did note today that the Mobil in Berowra in out of action, is the Caltex (left at 1st set of lights) the next option in case the Mobil hasn't re-opened?.......as who would put Shell in their Monsters

Cool, thanks for the info on the fuel situation at Berowra.
I'm guessing it's changing it's clothes to become a 7eleven branded outlet.

That's if we end up heading up that way.
If the group is sizable I'm still taking the first option and just heading up and down the Putty.
With 20 or so riders and people of all levels it will be an easier run, zero chance of getting lost and not as much need to stop and re-group as much.

My thought would be to meet at our usual place along Windsor Road at the Caltex/Macca's.
Head up to Colo Heights for the thirsty bikes. Into Singleton for lunch and turn around to come back down.
Very easy, no turns off in either direction just a simple run up and back. If some gets lost then.......

That's my idea of the best plan with a large group.

From what everyone has been discussing, it appears that there's three options (in very brief description);
a) Start at Berowra, north up the Old Rd, through Wollombi, South via the Putty, end at Windsor
b) The reverse of 'a' (start at Windsor, end at Berowra)
c) Start at Windsor, north up the Putty, turn around, south back via the Putty, end up at Windsor

Is it worth setting up a poll to see what everyone thinks?

Feel free to tell me to 'butt out' if necessary  ;D, I'm just up for a great day out - which ever way we end up going.

We are interested but won't be able to do the whole thing.

Matty, once Craigo has confirmed Claudio's tour details and your plans are more concrete ... can you post a bit of route and we'll see if we can meet up somewhere along the way (or way home).

Obviously with the route as it stands we will not be meeting up with you lot. Have an enjoyable day and ride safe.

OK, butting in with a voice of reason, and one who has organised one or two of these things before...

It's futile at this stage weighing in with other options  - save that for when _you_ organise the next ride  [Dolph]

As for now, Matty's called it, so lets leave well enough alone.

It's a simple ride - up the putty and back....

Lunch will be somewhere at the top of the putty - probably dictated by whether you need to wait more or less than an hour for your order. To set expectations correctly, its not likely to be gormet. If you're foodie inclined, pack a picnic hamper to mount on the back of your bike and go nuts.

It you crave more adventure than a return putty trip, bid your travelling party best wishes and go on your merry way another route.

Anyways, given it's only days away, now is the time to confirm your intent to come, and little more....
Now I must slink away and ask the trouble and strife if I can go (and then return and confirm my intent!)

Good evening to you all!

For the uninitiated.........the Caltex Servo/Maccas that Matty mentioned is the one at Rouse Hill, which is on Windsor Rd, heading north, .
And, as our fearless leader arranged.........it is an 8.30 meet.......gives us some time to fuel up plus swap any ideas on gardening, crocheting etc....... ;D
Then leave by 9am, heading up Windsor Rd  (hopefully all in just one lane  ;D) for an enjoyable, safe ride...... [thumbsup]

Hate to be the....... pessimist  [thumbsdown], only a question......however will there be a ill weather call in the morning?

The forecast could show a tad of dampness expected.....

Sydney area: Mostly sunny day. Patchy rain developing during the evening. Winds north to northwesterly averaging up to 20 km/h, turning northeasterly along the coast in the afternoon. (http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/sydney.shtml)

If it is pissing down at Castle Hill when I get up tomorrow morning at ~7:00 I will post it, but I reckon it's gonna be a good day (well, morning at least). Unless it is clearly gonna rain, I'm going up the road and back  [Dolph]

I know it's the night before, but just a word of caution when we turn right into Grey Gum Cafe's main driveway on the Putty:

It's covered in THICK LOOSE GRAVEL so don't expect to turn or brake on it. Do all ur braking on Putty rd.

Unfortunately my friend just touched the front brake and dropped their BMW right in front of me a few weeks ago. Scratched tank cover + sore knee.

Spread the word ;)

Glad you all had a good day out yep bit of a shame about the traffic and incident on the Putty but in saying that the return journey was magnificent.
As Rob S said while "I" was filling up at Colo Heights, what a great road in that direction.

Good to meet those new to Oz Mo's group rides, sorry to disappoint by not having a clean bike for you, but it's down the list of priorities right now.

Cheers

Well done Matty, I didnt think that you could organise good weather, but if we are going to do another ride could you organise that one too!

Rob mentioned to me how good the ride back was but I told him I got a bit bored and my arse was starting to get a sore.

Hey Dock were did you get those tiny driving lights from?

And did anyone get any nice pics?

Except of course for the good bits, but then your bordom might have had something to do with the bike that was under you.

The GS is nice enough - but it's just not my style Brian. Lots of buttons and dials and shit that appeals to my geek side, but it's so very.. German. "Clinical" was used to describe BMWs by a fellow ozmo on the day and I think that is accurate. The other reason they interest me is when I screw up GPS routes and end on dirt roads I can just ride on.

p.s. stop stalking me.

Ha!!!

I went back and double checked & surprise, surprise.... you're right!!!

I must have somehow missed that. I was goging to call it 'Singleton to Wollombi', but the battery died before we got there (not too bad I suppose, considering it had been going since Colo Heights!).
