My brother's birthday is this weekend, and I'd like to pick up a mechanical clay pigeon thrower for him. I can get one at Cabella's in Reno (he lives up there), but I'd rather get one before I head up there. Does anyone know of a sporting goods store, preferrably in the east bay, that would have a good selection? My googling isn't working well.

These guys are in Sacramento. Not a super nice thrower, but worth calling them. Plenty of redneckery between here and Reno.
That could work, but I'm heading up there after work on Friday. Might not make it before closing time.
Lots of em at Sports Authority:

There's one in Emeryville. Call to see if they have the one you want in stock.
What?! I don't even wanna know... [cheeky]
ah, yes, da sports...atoritaay
I'm probably the only one that knows what you're talking about and I don't even watch the show. Ya 'tard.
And if you need a gun well...you DO live in Oakland...
I double dog dare you to buy the following at the whatever sporting goods store you go to:
1) Shotgun
2) Hacksaw
3) Ski mask
Triple bonus points if you ask them if they carry a chainsaw quiet enough to use in an apartment.
In Oakland, we love our guns because we love America.
DM,
4) lollipops
Let's not forget lotion, rope, and a basket...

Also Western Sport in San Rafael. Nice small local shop.

I have seen this place. In fact, I think you can see the store from space. Thanks!

Yup that's the one. That place is HUGE. You can be in there a whole day, and not see everything...ok not really, but you know what I mean.

Yeah that would be the place i'd go. Theres got to be a place in livermore, where's jimbo, he'd know. Or Don he's into sport clays.
I would have said Trader Sports in San Leandro but the ATF shut them down. You know something about them being the No. 2 store for guns to show up at crime scenes, haha. It was the biggest gun store in the Bay Area.
There is another Trader Sports in Castro Valley I'm not on it's selection though.
I've never been to that Bass Pro Shop, but I think you'd want to call ahead and make sure they have the inventory. Make sure they are standing in front of what you are looking for when they talk to you. Some of my friends have had issues where the person on the phone says they have it but when they drive out there they don't have any.
That Cabella's in Reno is nice though might be able to have them set one aside and even gift wrap it for you :D
I bought a pound of cheese puffs at the Cabela's. If you've ever held a cheese puff, it doesn't weigh very much, so you can guess what a pound looks like. It cost 7.99 and was a large, plastic tub of orange tastiness. That was my gift in addition to Enzo's porcelain duck tosser.
