Title: M1100s - Custom Ohlins Steering Damper Top Mount Bracket
Post by: northerncalguy on July 15, 2011, 06:20:44 PM
Well, I was getting impatient with having someone build a custom bracket for the M1100s to fit a top mount damper from Ohlins, so I commissioned a buddy to do the work for me. If anyone is interested in a bracket for their 1100, let me know and I can pass along the note to him for a quote.

What are you willing to pay for something like this?

Here's a pic of the work in progress (very rough, he's only gotten started with a basic mock up for positioning, clearance angles/distances, so the finished product will be a lot cleaner).

We are going to make it out of 6061 billet CNC'd to fit the dimensions on the 1100, it will be comprised of 2 pieces attaching an Ohlins damper with 68mm of stroke. It will attach to the two studs in the key well and the handle bar bracket, similar to how Bitubo does it.

would be cooler if you came up with an undertriple mount that way people who use clipons could use it.

Yeah, I looked into it. It's not simple, but not impossible either. This top mount route is going to be the easiest for me, but I'll let my machinist buddy noodle on the under triple possibility.

Could it be used if I install the Rizoma handle bar?
How about the speedymoto handlebar??

Right now, the only mount I'm making is for a stock handle bar setup.

I'm interested in the Ohlins top mount, I asked the dude that makes the side mount if he was looking making a top mount, he got back to me and said not enough demand for it. Let us know how it goes with R & D, testing and such, I might order one from you guys. :) Price wise, I would pay what they charge for the GPR.

Duc796, who is the "dude" who makes them for side mount? Could you point me to a link or website or something. I am interested in side mount, um, "mounts"  ;D

I'm just a little iffy about putting it on a welded frame. Just me.

Where could I purchase this mount for the damper?

Chiu, I believe you have the M1100s like I do. This mount does not fit our bikes :-(

Well, after about 3.5 weeks and several iterations of measuring, test fitting and machining my buddy and I finished the top mount steering bracket. I think it turned out pretty well and although a bit rough on the finish, very functional and perfect fit. Here are some pictures and a link to a short video I made for this little project.

If anyone is interested in getting one of these for your 1100, PM me and I can get you more details. These were not cheap to produce but if we get enough people interested I can bring it down to a reasonable cost.

Cheers!

that looks great but wow did you you really cut it close when it came to the lock to lock any way you could have given maybe a 1/4 inch more of clearance when you go lock to lock?

We have a little over 3/16" clearance, lock to lock which was difficult to get given the overall geometry of the tank, handlebar, etc. You could technically get more clearance if you get a shorter damper body, but it's designed within spec and shouldn't cause any problems. If you have non-CF tank center pieces, the clearance will be close to 1/4".
