I am at the point of doing some paint work on my motor case. As I started prepping couldn't help but to wonder if there is a reason beside ascetics that the cylinder is painted black on my M900? (heat dissipation, avoiding the Apocalypse or maybe that's what keeps the sky blue) Just had to ask. Thanks

That gentleman in the picture, an ascetic, determined that black was the color which helped minimize your desires.
Also, he believed it gave the motor greater aesthetic value.
(So, for an actual answer to your question, it's black because somebody liked how it looked. The cylinder heads on my '00 900 were the same gray as everything else.)
paint helps the cast iron cylinder not turn brown. You can paint it silver if you wish.
