Title: Safety gear, by accident?
Post by: speedknot on August 05, 2011, 05:48:13 PM
I took my bike out for a short run after I cleaned 'er up today.  I forgot that I had a white rag sticking out of my back pocket.  While I was stopping for a light, a veteran biker pulled up next to me and said that that rag flapping in the wind was one of the a greatest visible aids he's seen.  He said he could see it way down the road and it made me more visible while stopping for the light.  I wasn't sure what he meant but I quickly realized it was the polishing cloth in my back pocket he was referring to.

I've noticed too, when I'm on the hwy, the guys doing 100mph with their t-shirts blowing around are much more visible than the bikers with tighter fitting clothes.

I'm not one to start tying streamers to my bikes but if something as simple as a white rag sticking out of your back pocket could advert getting creamed by a cager, then maybe its not such a bad idea.

Wonder if you could get the same effect with a bandanna tied around your neck (for those without convenient pockets, wearing leathers, etc.) ?

Added bonus of keeping the sun off your neck, and providing a handy mask when you need to avoid tear gas or rob a 7/11.

The experts have often mentioned the slight weave gets noticed when coming up to an intersection more than a straight moving object(bike). So by changing your lane position from left to right away from the left turning vehicle, you are more easily seen, because movement catches the eye of the driver.  [Dolph] Good observation though.

The other day, there was a van on my tail uncomfortably closer than I wanted , I took my leg off the peg to shake it out and I noticed the van back off! It wasn't my intent, but it worked, I will keep it in my bag of tricks! Same thing with using hand signals in the day time, I make an effort to use them in the day, where I can.

It looks like the cape got pulled into the chain and reeled him in.  I love the squeal at the end  [laugh]
