Title: San Fran in December
Post by: metallimonster on August 26, 2011, 08:11:25 AM
Posted this in no-moto but it probably belongs here.

So Metallica is playing 4 shows in 6 days at the Fillmore the first week in December.  It's for club members only and I can't believe I get to see them in a place that holds less than 2K people.  Especially since the tickets cost me $6 a piece.

I'll be flying into Oakland and taking the BART into San Fran.

Anyone in San Fran?  What should I not miss while I'm there.  I'm going by myself so I'll be able to do whatever I want and will have plenty of spare time.  I'm hoping to play Disc Golf in Golden Gate park depending on the weather. Other than that I'm sure I'll see the bridge but have no other plans.

Also, if any has a "card" I would really appreciate some help on that end.  I listen to the Joe Rogan Experience and some of the stuff they talk about that you can get out there sounds awesome.

Welcome! Post up when you get firm plans and we can all meet up at Zeitgeist.

Getting a card requires a doctor's visit, from what I've read.

As for Metallica, I'll be seeing them next week at my company's conference:

Yeah I knew I can't go but I was hoping I could get someone to go for me.  We don't have to talk about it here. PM's or something.

I'm pretty much going to be flying in Sunday the 4th (around 1) and leaving Thursday the 8th (around 2).  The concerts are Monday and Wednesday night so I'll be free the rest of the time.  I'd love to meet up anywhere.

Dude you're in for a treat, they're planning big things for that gig. I'd be much more jealous if I didn't get to see them at the Fillmore.

I hate to be lazy, but... I really am lazy.

Here's a couple of threads to get the ball rolling:

These threads are exactly what I'm looking for.

Who's around that wants to maybe meet up?  I'm sure we can talk about it more when it gets closer to December.

I'm super excited to see San Fran especially after watchin Planet of the Apes!

It's exactly like the movie. Except maybe a few more transgendered apes.

sorry, from lazy, copied from non-moto...

Dude, you got tix to each show??!!  sweet.

I play disc golf (not well, maybe 1x/mo) and would love to get some rounds in!!  have extra discs, if'n you don't wanna bring your bag

you need to set aside a few hours (at least) & go to Amoeba records, it's also actually fairly close to GG park/disc course

have you been to SF before?  many things to see/do...  depends on interests, great food town, some good local brews...

as well, have a buddy with card (who also plays disc...)

I stayed for 5 songs but was completely wiped out from a long day so I went home early. I was front and center for a bit, but when Kirk Hammett starts in with the wah pedaal crap I get a bit annoyed :)

So I'm getting ready to make hotel reservations.  Any suggestions on what areas to avoid?  The show is at the Fillmore so I would like to be close.  I'm looking for a cheap place not a really nice hotel.  Also, I won't have a car, how easy will it be for me to get around?  I want to see the bridge the park and the warf and really anything else cool.

I saw a decent hotel on the edge of Chinatown but is that a good area?

Any suggestions will help.  Thanks.

San Francisco is 7 miles by 7 miles...and is covered fairly well by public transit and taxis. You won't have trouble getting around. Check out the transit trip planner at 511.org to get an idea: http://511.org/ (http://511.org/)

As for Chinatown, it's just fine. There really are no truly dangerous areas of San Francisco. It's one of the safest big cities in the country. Not that I'd encourage you to stay in places like Bayview/Hunters Point, but there's no worries on safety here...just do as you would in any city: keep your wits about you.

One of the best ways to see things is by bicycle tour. Check out the Local Resources thread for tons of good ideas:

You renting a bike while you're out here? You can, you know...then we can take you across the bridge the right way [Dolph]

He doesn't want to stay in the Tenderloin.  Hotels around Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf will cost you more.  If you're not afraid of da gays, I seem to remember some decently priced places around the Castro, which is a short (and frequent) bus ride to the Fillmore.

Getting around is relatively easy, but you'll likely need to use buses.  The Fillmore is right on a couple of really convenient bus lines.  It's pretty walkable too b/c it's so small.

SF is really nice.

I have driven there and parked my car out of the city for the whole week and not returned to it until I was ready to leave.
SF is safe. My girl and I walk 95% of the time. The best days are just walking around the city with an idea of adventure.
We stayed with a friend in the tenderloin, walked home from bars after closing. You will be fine.
Cheap places can mean disgusting though so check reviews.

You can get a card for ~$150 and that means walk out of the Dr. office and straight to a dispensary. Otherwise hit Haight street, party starts usually around 6pm.

You have tickets for me +1?

Thanks for the tips guys 511.org is exactly what I was looking for.  Looks like it should be pretty cheap and easy to get wherever which is nice.

I might try a bike trip but I doubt I ride moto while i'm out there.  I really want to just enjoy the city and half of my evenings/nights will be at the concerts.  Plus I'm trying to  do this on a budget.  That doesn't mean we can't meet up.  I would love to have someone who knows the city show me around a little. As it gets closer we can all talk about meeting up.  I will be disc golfing so keep that in mind if anyone wants to join.

I think I've found my hotel and its around Japan town not Chinatown.

Risks- you almost could have had my other ticket but I finally found someone here to go with me.  Missed it by 4 days. I believe I have to be a resident of the state to get a card but I'm hoping someone on here can help me out if not no big deal I'll probably just try to find someone when I get there.  I wish I could get one because I would really like to have the experience of going to an actual store for it.  Ohio is way different from CA in that respect.

Have fun man.

SF is awesome. I love it and miss it.

And if you are into tattoo's check out Goldfield's it is super dope.
My really good friend worked out of there for a while and the artists there are sick.
Super historical for the tattoo movement.

And dive asian food spots are the most delicious.

So the Hotel I am looking to book today is the Monarch Hotel on Geary and Van Ness.  Doesn't look like the nicest place but it is really cheap, seems clean and has some good reviews for the type of traveler i am.  It's really close to the shows which is a plus and I think it is pretty close to a lot of cool stuff from your responses and other threads.

Any thoughts before I book it?

So I'm less than a month away and trying to do some planning.

I was thinking that I can't be out there and miss there redwoods. Would it be worth it for me to rent a car for a day and head up there? Would I be able to see enough cool things to make it worth it?

No. You should rent a bike and go up there...weather permitting. There are some amazing roads on the way.

There are several places you can see redwoods...probably the closest is Muir Woods, which is in the middle of a fantastic ride. The second closest is probably Armstrong Redwoods, which is also in the middle of a fantastic ride. In fact, if you wanted to make it epic:
1) Rent a motorcycle in San Francisco (see the Local Resources thread - http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=562.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=562.0) for several places)
2) Ride to Muir Woods: http://www.nps.gov/muwo/index.htm (http://www.nps.gov/muwo/index.htm)
3) Ride Highway 1 to River Rd, cut in to Guerneville, and visit Armstrong Redwoods: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=450 (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=450)
4) Have lunch at Bear Republic Brewery (http://www.bearrepublic.com/ (http://www.bearrepublic.com/)) in Healdsburg
5) Ride Skaggs Springs Road, the most epic motorcycle road in the western US: (Skaggs Springs Rd - 2009-09-02 - Following Mike and Eric (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkvNhhpqpH8#))

Man I really wish I could rent a bike but I wouldn't feel comfortable with all my gear and I haven't rode a bike that is not my monster in 8 years.  I just don't see it happening.  I really wish I could though.

Now you did just convince me to rent the car though.  I WILL NOT miss Bear Republic Brewery.  They make my favorite IPA and I have to get some fresh.

I'm guessing this trip will make me fall in love with San Fransico so I'm assuming I'll be back very soon with the s/o.

Dude...you can't get to within 10 miles of the most epic motorcycle road on the West Coast and not ride it. That'd be an absolute travesty...let go of your fears...even a little bike like an F650 would do. Skaggs is only 11 miles from Bear Republic...

+1 to this, and I'm sure we can help with gear, if it's a prob bringing out

driving these roads in a cage, although "nice", would be masochistic.

So, while moving (not riding) my bike to the basement last week I sprained my knee.  I'll be fine to walk around or whatever but I doubt I'll be able to ride.  The only thing that still hurts is bending it for long periods of time. I do appreciate the offer though guys.

I just got my route from Oakland Airport to my hotel down and now I'm looking at using the Muni and Buses to get around.  I think I've got it all down for now.

So whats up for a meet up somewhere?  I'd love to meet up with anyone Sunday evening so I can meet some fellow DMF'rs and learn more about the city. Hotel is on Geary but I'm willing to meet anywhere.

I might be able to get a beer Sunday evening. Zeitgeist is our usual haunt, but we're flexible.
