BUT.....These showed up today....not that a couple 1080 big bore pistons are gunna solve everything...looks like all new crank bearings and I might have the crank balanced and polished...HELL, I'm in there...WHY NOT!?!?

Year, model and mileage of that cracked piston?
2007 S2r1000 at 19k miles...
[bang]
At 19k miles?
That sux.
Good that you found it before it went nuclear. :P
Wow. Guess I missed an earlier thread, if there was one.
What did that sound like, and what causes a piston to fail like that???
BK
bad forging
youre a lucky SOB
Hard to say what exactly the cause was...I have to break her down more so this evening to see what other parts are damaged...Titanium rods anyone? haha
UGH!
Wow! at such a young age? i also would like to know what caused it.
Yikes! I thought the DS1000 motor was supposed to be 'bullet-proof'! Scary.

+1. Owning the same bike, I'd like to hear what the sound/symptoms were that caused this.
No actual symptoms to mention...I ordered a new crank and rods (bearings, gaskets, seals..crush washers...etc) both in stock form. I might send the crank out for polishing and balancing...but for now a stock replacement should be just fine.
I haven't had the bike that long. Maybe put 1200 miles on her or so before all the custom stuff. Looks like perhaps the oil pump failed. Still haven't split the case. The crank and rods were ordered on the suggestion of my tech who has 30ish years working on bikes..most of that with ducati.
Basically, we got the bike back from HMF who made the amazing custom exhaust for our project, threw her up on the dyno for some tuning and upon the 2nd pull, the oil light flashed a bit and the noise began. My tech exhausted every possible "small" test he could before surrendering to the fact it was big...we took the vertical cylinder apart last night to discover what we did...that was where the noise was certainly coming from...
As i have more answers, I'll keep you guys updated. Prolly a freak occurrence. I have to doubt that any of you with the same motor and similar mileage have anything to worry about.
damn man. good luck. hope its much better when you finish it
any updates? i was going to say, you're almost better off buying a brand new DS1000 instead of attempting the repair and replacement of all those parts. after labor, i think a engine swap would be cheaper no?
i think he works in the business so prob not paying much if any labour other than outsourced parts.
Yeah, I'm in the business. I have techs that work for beer and lunches...the labor cost isn't an issue. The only issue is sometimes my bike gets "bumped" for jobs that are a priority.. [bang]
Updates soon...gotta pull the other cylinder and get it off to Millennium Technologies for boring and plating. Maybe today.
DAMN!
Still didn't get to split the cases today, but I did order the Ducati Performance Cams...
Again, I must say..."What the HELL? I'm in there anyway".......
Also, I did get my used replacement rods in the mail already. If you guys are searching for used parts on Ebay, "Rubbersideup" has given me great service and amazing prices on multiple occasions!
Pinwall Cycles is about 30 minutes away from me we use them as needed for used parts here at my dealership as well. Great prices, but just know what you are after as they are not Ducati people per say...just have a ton of parts!
There is my "PLUG" for those who have helped me in this mess.
Updates to come...
