There has already been some great performances so far, but Cam Newton as a rookie throwing for 422 in his first game and 432 in his second game (although both were losses) was pretty impressive.
Brady is possessed.

Even the Raiders have looked decent, even though they lost after leading the Bills 21-3 at the half this week.

And, I've never been a Tony Romo fan until Sunday.
If the Bucs can start playing offense when the game starts, instead of waiting for the second half, we might actually win some games this year.

Good for Flaco! It's great to see that the Ravens have stuck with the guy even after his first few seasons. He has been on the wrong end of the Steeler rivalry a lot, but it's great to see a team that will stick with their guy even if they don't win every single game.
I've been a long time 49er fan- since the days of John Brodie, and yes, even OJ played for the 9ers at the end of his career. After a long drought, the Niners finally look like they might be for real, so I'm going to drink some of the Koolaid now. Great win today over the G-Men. [beer]

That is a good question. And, the good part is we're gonna find out. One of the problems with the close games so far is Kaepernick is not getting any playing time at all. If Smith goes down with an injury towards the end of the season, or in the playoffs it's going to be very interesting. But I think Smith is doing a good job and hope he makes it all the way.

I'd say a good thing (unless he gets thrown in with a Smith injury obviously). I don't see a downside to letting him ride the bench and just learn for a year or two...worked out fine for Aaron Rodgers!

Agreed, Kap will be better off on the bench for awhile. The local paper wrote an editorial about how Kaepernick is irrelevant to the Niners now that Smith is playing well. I wrote a rebuttal that they actually printed. Now that I'm a published author my head is swollen and I'll be posting a lot more of my superior observations [drink] [cheeky]
My point in the other post about Kap not getting any playing time was that I don't think the Niners have a viable backup to Smith at this time who can step in at a high level if Smith goes down. OK for Kap not to be playing, but not OK for the team not to have an experienced and capable backup. But who knows, if the time comes, maybe Kaepernick can step in and play. He has a work ethic approaching Jerry Rice's. Andy Dalton is doing great as a rookie and IIRC, Roethlisberger won his first 10 games as a rookie.
Thread drift, don't know if you're following but Nevada has recovered from the 500 to 20 loss to Oregon and is undefeated in the WAC.

Good point, but many NFL teams have no good back-up plan if their QB goes down...see the Colts this year! [puke] Kap could do well if thrown in though. Like you pointed out, it isn't unheard of. I think coaching is a huge part of it, and Harbaugh seems like the real deal. I hate to admit it but I like to see the loser Niners win now...Harbaugh is an ex-Bear (my team), and Kap having gone to Nevada.
I hadn't noticed how well Nevada had been doing, but I did hear their new QB is pretty good. Good to hear! Great to see Boise lose as well! [evil]

And the scary part is that Green Bay still has room to improve.

I agree, but there are probably too many thug season ticket holders in Detroit who enjoy Suh's antics. The franchise doesn't want to lose their business.
What would the Patriots or the Packers do about a player THUG like Suh???
I think the league also likes the "feel good story" that the Detroit Lions are so far this season.
They don't want to lose the growing popularity they have going there right now, hence only a 2 game sit down for Suh.
What a game tonight between the Giants and Cowboys. [clap]
Seeing Jerry Jones turn his back to the camera after the missed field goal almost made me want to cry. [laugh]
On a different note, it's really hard to explain all of this Tebow magic.
Do you know how many QBs have a better winning % that Tebow? (1) = Aaron Rogers
Still, here is a list of NFL QBs I would take over Tebow: Kolb, Ryan, Flacco, Newton, Romo, Brady, Stafford, Brees, Rogers, Eli and Peyton Manning, Sanchez, Rivers, and Smith.

Rogers has done great, but how can you not give it to the guy that has had the best season passing of all time?
The Saints offense is scary good.
The 85 Chicago Bears defense was the best I can remember. The 2011 Saints might be the best offensive team of all time.
I have to say Peyton Manning. Who else is more valuable to thier team. :o Rodgers backup set team records today. Even though I live in Wisconsin, I dont think Rodgers should win. They win without him just as easy. Brees probably deserves it alittle more.

As a lifelong fan of the only AFC North team to not make the playoffs, I will probably be in for a rough Superbowl. It gets old saying "We're rebuilding, we should be competitive in another couple of years!" for over a decade.
The Lions had it going on, but they are done now.
The Lions were a year early in their arrival to the playoffs versus their rebuilding. I expect they'll be fearsome next year.

I wonder what our lord and savior has against the Steelers, Bengals, Falcons, and Lions?
The poor Falcons got their asses handed to them. What a dull game.
The Steelers/Broncos though... that was a fun ride.
Also,
I find people's reactions to Tebow very interesting. He's divisive, inspiring both rabid fandom (which I don't really understand), and venomous dislike (which I also don't really understand).
He seems like a pretty stand-up guy, and less of an asshat than a great many professional athletes. As for his quarterbacking, he is by all appearances a middling QB (who may improve in coming years), and I'm not really sure how he's become this sports celebrity.

For context, I only halfway pay attention to such things. I enjoy watching pro ball, but I'm not sure I'd say I "keep up with it." And I mostly ignore college ball.
The times I've watched the Broncos, he's run the gamut from "middling" to "acceptable/decent."
I was reasonably impressed with him during tonight's game, but I haven't seen anything that would, to my mind, justify the reactions people seem to have.

Keeping up with college and pro ball to a degree that would allow me to be "well-versed" in such things exceeds my interest level in the sport. I'm more of the "watch a game or two over a weekend and not think about it much later" type of football fan.

The guy is a great leader but still not a great quarterback. He was definitely showing that he is capable of passing in the 2nd quarter, but Pittsburgh was shutting them down the rest of the game even with their defensive injuries and had adjusted to it after the 2nd touchdown drive. When he's been under pressure or is being forced to throw regularly instead of being able to keep people guessing on the running game (see games vs.: Buffalo, New England), his deficiencies as a quarterback become apparent. Pittsburgh rightly decided to make their defensive strategy one designed to contain the run, which resulted in less pocket pressure with man-coverage in the secondary. Denver was able to exploit that in the 2nd Quarter and the first play of OT - if you watch a clip of the play in OT, both Pittsburgh Safeties are in the box playing run coverage with no protection deep or pressure on the QB. He had some great passes, such as the OT pass that hit the WR in stride and the last pass of the 3rd quarter where he hit the WR over the back shoulder. The problem is his inconsistency, which is blaring when you look at his pass on 3rd in the 4th quarter with 1:50 or so on the clock where he botches it and forces a punt back to Pittsburgh.
I'm not much of a fan of him because I watch football to get away from all of the other issues of the world, not to be evangelized to constantly with piously open displays of faith. The guy is a stand-up fellow who does great work in the world and I can respect him for that, but what makes him polarizing is that everything is about his faith, which irks me since if I wanted his faith I'd go to his church. Between that and a season of eking out wins against a series of average or injured teams making everybody think he's the second coming of Elway (you thought I was going to say something different, didn't you?!? :P), I think he's overhyped for what he's capable of; he succeeds because he has good pieces around him for support (good receivers, good running backs, good playcalling, good defense), not because he's so amazing (which isn't to say he's terrible, but more a recognition of where his talent as a quarterback is in relation to the rest of the league). I say the same things about teams like the 2006 Bears, since neither Kyle Orton nor Rex "@$#^ it, I'm going deep!" Grossman were "good" quarterbacks (the south side of average is where I'd place them, which is why they're consistent journeymen instead of franchise QBs), but with a solid running game and a staunch defense that kind of deficiency at the main leadership and passing position can be compensated for.
Stats that stick:
Yards after the catch for Denver: 132 (Denver season average: 68.4)
Completion/Attempt Ratio: 10/21
Passing Plays attempted on 1st Downs prior to OT: 3 (of 25, including all 1st downs such as opening drive plays and end-of-half kneels)
Cheap hits by James Harrison: 1, putting his shoulder into a guy's knee on the planted foot since he thinks that's the only way to hit a player without giving them a concussion.
Tebow sucks. This from a Gaytors and Broncos hater.

What an ass whooping. Brady played great, but the pats defense was awesome. [clap]
1-1
Now now boys
Fantastic game between the Saints and the 49ers! I'd figured on the Saints, but was happy to see the Niners make it happen.
As for the Pats/Broncos... damn, I hadn't expected them to win, but I hadn't really expected them to get steamrolled like that. :P
I'm really hoping the Ravens can get past Houston today. I would like to see them play the Niners, since they are replacing the Saints as my preferred NFC SB team.
The Ravens are in the AFC. They won't play the Niners unless both teams make it to the big dance.
Good game between the Ravens and Texans. [clap]
2-1
Giants looked stout and the Packers receivers couldn't catch a cold.
2-2
15-1 and the Packers don't even get to the NFC title game! [laugh] [thumbsup] As a Bears fan I approve! ;D
Who would have thought at the beginning of this year that the 49ers would be hosting the NFC Championship game! :o
The Pats will be tough next week. Of course, if the Ravens & 49ers both win, we will have the Harbaugh brothers facing each other in the Super Bowl.
I give the Giants a good chance to go to San Fran and upset the Niners.
Imagine what the Texans could have done if they'd had their QB.

Date & Time Favorite Spread Underdog
1/22 3:00 ET At New England -7.5 Baltimore
1/22 6:30 ET At San Francisco -2.5 NY Giants
My Picks
Niners over G-men
Pats over Dirty Birds
Giants
Patriots
So it's my turn to sound crazy. It won't happen of course, but:
Ravens
San Fran
In case anyone was curious how much Colts fans hate the Patriots, there's a handy map for that: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=frontpage&pollId=131548 (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=frontpage&pollId=131548)
I find it funny a higher % of Utah voters pick the 49ers than Cali voters.
My Pick
Pats & 49ers
Mostly cus I don't want to relive that David Tyree catch for 2 weeks if there is a Pats/Giants rematch. :P
Here we go boys and girls. [popcorn] [drink]
What a make the beast with two backsing game. [clap]
1-0
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! [thumbsdown]
Come on Niners!

easy choice for me. :P
Another great game. [clap]
2-0
YEAH!!!
They played like crap, squandered a few lucky breaks, made dumb mistakes, but won anyway...
I'll take it. ;D
[beer]
[bacon]
Drat!!!! Niners lost. [bang]
The early line has New England favored by 3 over the G-men. I think the Giants should be favored by about 6.
I'll take the Giants to win the Super Bowl. 31-24
Patriots will win the Super Bowl.
As they should have in 2007.

I think that if Brady shows up, the Pats should be able to pull it off. I don't care either way.
I'm not a big football fan but my wife and I did make a day of it watching both games. Something I haven't done in about 25 years. Two good close games. Definitely could have been played better but they were close and went down to the wire. That always makes for a good game. But I now have it out of my system and most likely won't even watch the Superbowl. I'll hear about the good ads on the following day.
My wife is a Saints fan so when they lost that heart breaker she no longer cares either. Probably will be a good time to catch a movie since the rest of the world will be watching the big game. [thumbsup]
Hope your favorite team wins! [popcorn] ;)
It felt wrong that the Ravens lost on a missed FG. I like the Pats, but I thought the game was even.
'Niners D was smothering in the 2nd half, but so was the Giants'... Eli was the difference.
What I was really pulling for was the Harbaugh brothers throw-down.

Yeppers, seeing the brotherhood of coaches go at it in the Superbowl would have been epic! [thumbsup] [clap] [popcorn]
I'm going with "The New York Giants" [popcorn]

Do I hear music in the background?
Nicks won't forget that hit for quite some time.
That Fiat commercial was awesome. [clap]
At least it was a good game.
Hell of a game [clap]

It's been around (at least online) for a while.
But yes, good.
I doubt that it will help them sell more cars, however.
Great game
Pretty good half time show IMO
Fantastic beer!
mitt
Good for the Giants!
Although it wasn't fair for the Pat's. I think Karma stepped in, didn't Brady leave Bridgette Moynihan when she was 8 months prego with his baby?
It's hard to cheer for QB with hair extensions.
I didn't care either way. At first, the fact that Cruz is a rican tipped me over to the Giants. Then I heard that Hernandez is also a boricua. So after that I just enjoyed the game.
humm....Giants win and the next Super Bowl will be in their new home? Get me the tinfoil hat!

I'm pretty sure that isn't cool...
but that's just me.
I'll take it down if you like.
It's a reference to the fact that the league prints up shirts for both teams.
The shirts with the losing team's logos get shipped overseas.

Why does the reference to extra shirts translate to little black kids?.........
There are poor under clothed white people everywhere.

Would it be somehow better if it were a picture of poor, under-clothed white kids (or Hispanic, or Indian, or Asian, or...)?
There's poor, under-clothed people of all races and creeds, and I'm unsure how picking one variety over another changes the relative value of the picture.

I'm not sure if it makes it 'better'
...and you're right...
poverty is color blind.
It just seems that the little black African kid is always the poster child...and that seems wrong.
I have way more questions than answers.

The NFL prints up shirts for both teams, then they ship the losing teams shirts to 3rd world countries. They don't want them ending up in countries that have potential NFL viewers, so generally they ship to the pacific island, asia or africa.
Also, that particular pic is a popular internet meme. I'm not defending it, or saying it's morally right, just pointing out that the poster was just re-posting a pic that has spread like wildfire across the rest of the internet.
Again, some (many) would find it in bad taste, but I just wanted to provide a little more background to the pic, it is very, very doubtful that the OP created that pic.
To get back on topic, I also want to add that the San Francisco Forty Niners are going to win next years super bowl as karma because they should've won this years. I'm unamused, ugh.

The 'creator' of the pic wasn't the question, nor the motive of the poster.
I'm just pointing out what I perceive.

Yeah, I'd have enjoyed seeing them go all the way. I suppose I'll just have to take "the Pats didn't win" as a consolation prize.
Seasons over. See ya next year, 'same Bat time, same Bat channel'
