Title: Old Fart Club initiation test
Post by: fastwin on June 19, 2008, 08:48:32 PM
OK, while I was out in the 90+ degree garage tonight sweating my ass off installing my newly revalved by Dan Kyle Ohlins shock for my old Gixxer 1000 (and yes I want to ride her Sunday, much to the chagrine of all you Asian bigots! [laugh]) I began to reminisce (something anyone under 40 shouldn't try to do) about all my years of riding and all the cool shit I have gotten to do on two wheels and what I read and dreamed of doing on said two wheels years ago. Ergo, the Old Farts Club came to mind, with me as the natural self-appointed President. What?... you want to claim THAT crown? How freaking sad is that? Leave the old farts something to call their own, dammit! But first the test to join.

OK, here we go (thought of this one in the shower), what did Jim Pomeroy have taped to the top of his helmet during the first Inter-Am motocross races put on by Edison Dye? 10,000 extra points for the first person who knows who Edison Dye is? And no God damn Goggling you little techy shits!! This is the real test, not your high tech "it will give me the answer so I don't have to think" calculator mind set. Shit, do they still make those? And thinking is what sets the old farts apart from the rest. And memory... and no that doesn't mean the memory in that box thing under your desk!! OK, here's part two. This is easy. The now famous pic of Steve McLaughlin's R90S Superbike flying upside down during a crash in the first AMA Superbike series, what track did that occur at and who actually won that first AMA SBK Championship? Jeez, this is fun. Kinda feel like that Jeopardy dude! Where's the damn buzzer??? Remember, I have skunks that will find out if any of you kids Goggled this shit and I will have Cher come over and kick your ass, banning you permanently from any Old Fart Club events!! [drink] Let the drinking... excuse me, the contest begin!! [thumbsup] I'd love to see who hits the first one, they really need to belong to the club... the second may be too damn easy. But what the hell... it's just good beer fun. [drink]

Sad, no answers. Gonna be a lonely club. :P

Yea, I failed....  [bang]

Don't worry, *** will certainly be able to answer these, not that he should be a member of the club, by any means.  :P

However, I'd still like to join the "put-the-comb-and-hairbrush-makers-out-of-business" chapter of the Old Fart Club.  ;D

Did someone say beer?   [beer]    [drink]

Yes, that in reality is the whole point of this thread. Beer is good. Everyone should have some today. That's the first and most important bylaw of the club. Otherwise, why have a club? ??? Any arguments with that? I thought not. Club meeting adjourned. Bar is now open. There... that was easy.

The first rule of the Old Fart Club is, you don't talk about Old Fart Club.
The second rule of the Old Fart Club is, you don't talk about Old Fart Club.

Sh*t, I thought you just had to be old and able to fart to join this club cause I can do that easy.

Edison Dye + motocross + Husqvarna+ died last year.  Jim Pomeroy motocross champ for Bultaco?  Died two years ago.  Steve Mclaughlin soccer player?  Opps. I mean superbike hero.  Daytona against Reg Pridmore.  Ask me how I know. ;D (IC)

OK, you can join! [thumbsup] Everyone thinks that pic was from Daytona because he won the very first Daytona SBK race in 1976 but that great pic of his crashed, upside down R90S was later that year at Laguna Seca. Reggie Pridmore (Jason's dad) won the overall Championship that first year. They rode Butler & Smith sponsored Beemers, then the importer of BMW bikes.

Pomeroy had a white plastic dove taped to the top of his helmet and at that time he raced a CZ.

OK... now the bar is open! [drink]

It wasn't daytona, Steve won at Daytona with Pridmore right behind him.  No clue about motocross, never was a fan, but I should get points for owning no few than THREE R90S's ( and 1 R90/6 ).

let's see:

1971 Suzuki T500 two stroke
1975 R90S ( awesome bike, and still one of my favorite motorcycle times of my life )
1976 R90/6
1975 R90S ( bought it in bad shape, sold it in worse shape.  by the time I sold it, the cyclinder heads were 90% JB Weld )
197x Benelli Sei ( never ran  [bang] )
1973 Moto Guzzi T3, Police Edition ( sort of like a volkswagen with handlebars, but it was fun )
1971 Triumph Trident ( rarely ran, but was very very fun )
195x Harley Panhead ( I think.  bought it in a box, sold it in the same box )
1976 R90S ( tricked out with dual ported heads, was still very slow )
1994 R1100RS
2001 K1200RS
2006 Ducati 999

I remember you saying that at the Dub... damn, I would love to have one in the old Daytona Orange fade paint job like my friend had in Austin. I think his was a '75 too. Some bikes will remain timeless beauties forever like the R90S, original Bonnevilles, Vincent Black Shadows, Norton Manx, 750/900SS Ducatis. Feel free to add you own. A hundred years from now some alien will be staring at those bikes in some intergalatic museum saying "Holy shit, those are f#@king beautiful"! [thumbsup] That's because they are, some were even great bikes. [clap]

[spoken like Grandpa McCoy]  Well, Luke, the way I sees it is this: if you can remember the answers to them questions, yer probably too young to be an Old Fart.  So to qualify, you must be completely unable to get them right...AND drive with your left turn blinker on.  [cheeky]

Pura vida!

Damn, not even a clue on the original Old Fart questions, WTH?  [bang]

Now if you had asked a SBK/MotoGP-type question from around 1988 - to present, I prolly would have a better chance...

Guess that just makes me A Fart.

My sister had a huge crush on David McCallum (sp?) who played Elia Kuriachen (sp????). Cool show. I Spy was good too. OK, now the bar is open!!

Lisa, do you remember when they stopped push starting at the GPs? This could jump you from Fart to Old Fart! [thumbsup]

Of course could be I'm just remembering snippets of Highlights... Awesome!  I CAN'T REMEMBER - that surely has to count for something  [laugh]

Lisa, did you ever see the movie "Le Mans" that starred Steve McQueen? You know he could haul ass in a race car or motorcycle in real life. Loved car racing so much he fronted the money for the movie himself. Great flic, cool Porsche endurance racers... 908/2s I think?? Check it out, groovy early 70s movie. [thumbsup]

Man, I LOVE that movie...

A very close second would be James Garner in, "Gran Prix."

You beat me to it!  Both outstanding flicks. So cool seeing those real vintage (now) race cars on real race tracks ( like the old Monza!) with some for real superfamous racers as extras and doing cameos.

Damn good flics for sure. Did McQueen make any bad movies? Loved the semi-documentary feel of Le Mans and the grand Hollywood epic style of Grand Prix.

You know McQueen bought that 908/2 personally and got Peter Revson to co drive with him against all the factory Ferraris, Fords and Porsches in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970. They were winning when two laps before the end Mario Andretti passed him and won. It was a win at all costs driving chore for Andretti, the Ferrari factory didn't want to be beat by some punk ass Hollywood actor's car.

He also raced the car that year in real 24 Hours of Le Mans race with cameras mounted on it (pretty hi-tech and cool back then!) and used that real life race footage in the movie! Pretty damn neat!!

More Old Fart crap... time for my nap. [coffee]

"Damn good flics for sure. Did McQueen make any bad movies?"

I heard his very last film was a stinker.  I think it was some Chekov play.

"Towering Inferno" maybe?

And then there's "Bullit".  LOVE the car sequences.  None better in film imo.  But the STORY!  What was that?

The jury's still out on "The Blob".

My all time bit of film is the motorcycle jump in "The Great Escape".  I have a picture of it on my wall above my desk.

Bud Ekins. I think he died last year. Great old desert sled racer in the old Triumph Bonneville desert racer days out of District 36-37. One of the best old school AMA off road racing districts with the likes of Malcolm Smith, etc. Ekins went on from desert racing to movie stunts through his friendship with McQueen.

Yeah, Bud died earlier this year.  Very sad.  I thought everyone knew Bud Ekins did the jump, but it's easier to say "When McQueen..." etc.

Ekins also did the motorcycle stunt in Bullit.  He was the real deal.  No doubt about it.

He was awesome. Made out of iron and a damn good rider. Do you remember his brother's name? I can't remember but he was damn good on two wheels in the desert too.

I was just thinking... wasn't it Dave? Any old farts out there that can verify that?

Yeah, his name was (is?) Dave.

From the Motorcycle Hall of Fame website:

"Perhaps Ekins’ greatest accomplishments came in the esteemed International Six Day Trials. In 1964, Ekins, his brother Dave, and Steve McQueen raced in the ISDT in Germany. The team led the international competition before McQueen was involved in a crash and Bud later broke his leg. In all, Ekins won four gold medals and a silver during his seven years of competing in the ISDT during the 1960s."

I love the way they had Triumphs painted up in drab German Army paint in the movie to make them look like kraut bikes. ;D Hey, it's the movies, they can do what they want. Still a great great movie. Need to get Colin to see it, I think he'd like it. Lord knows I did when I was his age.
