My friend is subleting her apt for the month of Nov. I'm thinking about taking the family. Never been to NY except to the airport. It's in the Upper East side and only a 15 min walk to Central Park.
Realistically, would this be a good time to go to the city with a baby in tow?
Yes, but if you are on the upper east side having a vehicle will be a PITA. Be sure to look us up if you do this.

Actually the approaching holiday season in NYC is a nice time of year, you'll be uptown and within easy striking distance of Rock Center, Museums, Theaters etc
I always liked the vibe in NY in fall leading up to Christmas, all tux'd up and on the way to and from Charity Fundraisers, Lincoln Center, Corporate holiday parties
I loved doing New Year's Eve at the Plaza,
dressing to the nines and getting thrown out of the Rainbow Grill and Top of the Sixes
and all the other finest establishments doing my lesser version of American Psycho
it is a splendid idea, do come
looks like i might need to find time to go to NYC next month [thumbsup]

friend hasn't gotten back to me yet? Still considering. I'll look you all up. I think it would be a great time in Nov. Can't believe I haven't been to the Big Apple yet?!
I'm usually there every Thanksgiving weekend.
Unfortunately, missed out on the trip to NYC and a chance to meet all you DMF'ers. [thumbsdown]
How come? Friend flaked or some other situation?
Mentioned earlier that she never got back to me. Oh well. Would really like to experience the holiday festivities on the east coast someday though.

After living in the city for several years, I can without doubt say that everyone should visit the city at least once in their lifetimes. There's just nothing like having all your senses enriched with museums, Broadway, the people watching, the sounds, sights, absolutely fantastic restaurants and so on.
As far as times to visit, I'd have to suggest avoiding the summer times because of the tourists that flock the city that time of year (generally more of a challenge in getting theater tickets and longer lines to go up Empire State, for example). And, depending on your tolerance, the sticky heat of summer (nothing like waiting in the subway tunnels in the dead of summer with no ventilation. Ugh.)
Personally I like the winter time when the Christmas season sets. The tree in Roc Center gets lit in ceremony in early Dec IIRC, plus the ice is set in the middle of the Center. Plus the window displays of Macy's and Saks and so on. Just a great holiday vibe that time of year.

Having lived in Manhattan for nearly 20 years, I can say the same thing, but frankly, it's not like it used to be. There used to be a more free wheeling feel to the city. The old camera and electronics shops in Times Square are gone, and so are the peep shows. Much of that is just technology moving on, but also the city really squeezed them out to whitewash a lot of the gritty side. Before they tore down the whole block and put up the Conde Nast building, the whole row of shops on 42nd in brownstones was really a slice of life. Now, the vast majority of shops on 42 are chains (Chevy's???.. SanRio?? Madame Tussauds??? Loews...)
It's still got a lot to offer, but so much has been whitewashed.
if you want to know where all the porn shops went ,come by my neck of the woods. theres over 25 porn shops within a mile on 3rd ave brooklyn between 55th and 30th st. oh i live on 40th lol.

wow, a bike courier.. i am surprised you have any regard for humans at all..
is it because NYC natives suck or because everyone else (tourist) are dbags?

the natives suck because (in general) don't want to deal with someone on a bike zipping along.
tourists suck because they're either gawking at the signs, buildings or the chick with the spiked purple hair.
at the end of the day, it's the same everywhere, there are just more people per sq ft in nyc so you end up smelling too many assholes to remain sane.

regard for them and faith in humanity are not the same.
i will do my best to avoid hitting you when you wander into the street without looking.
i don't have faith that you will look before you step off the curb. i have no faith that despite you looking right at me that you will not step off the curb right in front of me.
kinda like when we ride the motorcycles.

i didn't mean that to sound critical. i've seen people "clothesline" couriers. not just being dumbasses like you point out, but actually pushing them over etc. The guy who got clotheslined got up and beat the shit out of the guy with his chain.

i was trying to avoid the topic of people being evil.
the you in my statment referred to humans in general, but the response was full of ire.
though i know that there are some messengers that just don't give a shit and will run you over and keep going.
I went to Target yesterday up here in NY with my wife....

similar cross-section ....... "impressed" as in to have something impress upon you
the idea that Nihilism or extinction are not necessarily bad things
smugopedia sort of word usage ;D
ahso... i forgot you are Mr Nuance [laugh]
I've visited New York three times by myself. My wife hates big cities. I've walked all over Manhattan and Brooklyn. After awhile I sorta developed a stagger-shuffle like Ratso rizzo because my feet & ankles were so worn out. I like to visit in Fall especially. Spring's nice too.
Really New Yorkers are nice enough people. They just don't wanna be hassled by all the creeps you will find in any big city. I pretended to be lost a couple of times just to talk to people. Everyone has always been cool to me there. There is quite a bit of untreated mental illness in the city though too. Again, just like in any large population.
Old Town Bar is teh shit. [beer]
