Need some ideas if anyone has an opinion or suggestion here. ;)
Good friend (50's, 2 grown kids) eloped, having a reception in a few weeks. Invite did not mention gifts one way or the other. Getting her (them) something because she's a good friend and I want to â€" but what?
I should know this.... :P

Unless they don't drink.
Guess it depends on how much you want to spend.
I know when B and I got married, we didn't need anything.
We got some tools for the motos, bike stands, and gift cert to our dealer. Also some $$$.

She's not much of a drinker and I don't know whether he does or not. Still thought a nice bottle of wine would be good as I believe everyone should have some good stuff in their inventory (for guests like me). ;D And I know they don't
need anything....
Might do the cash thing if I can't come up with anything else - or I'll just call and ask her.
Thnx!
A really nice clock.
if you know their taste or decor....
and a note to remind them to make every second count...
second chances don't come often
visa gift card....and candles..cause everyone loves candles and its a gift you can wrap & put the gift card inside

Oh interesting!
Since they probably have more toasters and fondue sets than they can use, money (yeah, I know, cold) or maybe a weekend at a hotel or romantic dinner somewhere.
A nicely framed print.
A monster
If they cook, a nice chefs knife - like the Ken Onion Shun or similar
I'll skip the sex toy idea [laugh] and go with a nice bottle of champagne and two nice crystal bubbly glasses. They can sit on it for a year and celebrate their first anniversary with your gift. [thumbsup] [wine] Maybe a really nice picture frame. Maybe they have some pics of their ceremony or honeymoon. Practical but nice. Wifely unit and I didn't "need" anything. It was #2 for both of us. She's a picture nut so we got a lot of nice frames. Our island honeymoon got flushed by a hurricane so we have lots of framed ceremony pics.
High Quality pens are always a classy and thoughtful gift.
something stupid and silly followed by a good gift
like 5 pounds of butter and a picture of a pony (who cares if the joke is lost on them, you'll laugh) followed by one of the gifts mentioned above

setting up an emotional roller coaster
start off with confusion and disappointment and the good gift following it brings excitement and elation
Like giving a young son yellow socks and a brown sweater for Xmas and then immediately bring him out to the garage to see his new dirt bike.
The type of thing that my wife wouldn't let me do but if left to my own devices I can. Like her calendar with raccoons followed by the bottle of JW Blue.
My vote is for a new experience...something she or they may have mentioned as wanting to try...like a rock climbing lesson, French cooking class, fly fishing or casting lesson, learn to telemark, glass blowing, skeet shooting, pottery, beginner language lessons? I'm just throwing out ideas...
Anything that's new & exciting for both of them.

...calendar with raccoons...
That right there almost cost me computer repairs. [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
I did the reverse emotional rollercoaster one time w/a co-worker and a Tiffany gift box & bag which had one of our own give-aways in it (a multi-tool that we had an abundance of). Watching her dance around while opening the bag and saying "ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod" then the disappointment.... was priceless. I'm mean like that. [evil]

There is a restaurant close by that I know they haven't been to that they would love.... hmmmmm...
Now I have too many (very good) gift ideas!
Thanks everyone!

We think alike. I've pulled pranks like your Tiffany gift box diversion. It is fun to watch the wheels come off sometimes, isn't it? Does that make us bad? [laugh] [evil] [thumbsup]

omg I hope they make a 2012 I need this for my brother. He was obsessed with Raccoons as a kid.
as to OP. I like the dinner idea to a place they haven't been.
Ok, here's what I'm leaning towards:
Meerkat Mavericks
Cool, non-smelly candle(s)
Certificate to a highly reputable cooking school that's w/in walking distance of their place (for recreational cooking classes) â€" w/certificate tucked somewhere between rodeo and rock climbing meerkats.
[thumbsup]
Sounds great!! Especially the part about rodeo meerkats [laugh]
and I now have a PIF for mother...Thanks lethe. You are ALL kinds of helpful lately.
wtf happened?

While I would have MUCH rather gotten the Meerkat calendar, not enough time.
Precious Moments ranks right up there in the "what the...?!?!?" category (sorry if I'm offending any PM's fans).
;D
And tucked inside is a very nice gift card to the high end cooking school near them.

I'm guessing you nixed the hookers and blow idea. ;D
Only due to budget constraints.
Otherwise, they'd be wrapped in Precious Moments gift wrap and 1st in line to open at the reception. Damn buh-jits.
