Title: Let's See Some Guitars
Post by: NoisyDante on November 06, 2011, 06:18:29 PM
I've been playing guitar since I was 10, I even went to college initially for guitar performance, but I haven't been able to play for awhile because of the accident I had last year.  My ulnar nerve had been crushed and it took a lot of therapy to get my fingers moving again.  Also rotating my elbow has been a struggle but it's hurting less now.  My renewed motivation to play again pushed me to go buy the guitar I've wanted since I began playing, so this Saturday I picked up a PRS Santana II.  [evil]  Now my fingers hurt from playing it all day, hopefully I'll develop some calluses soon.

So what kinds of guitars and amps is everyone using?  Here's mine.

Les Paul Standard - vintage sunburst

PRS Hollowbody II - turquoise - 10top

Liking that Santana.  [thumbsup]

Been wanting to get a guitar for years!  What's a good one to start out on?

Down the road, I'd really lke my son to learn.  What's the earliest age for kids to start?

I've heard acoustic is better to start out on.

Really depends on the kids interests, if he/she is all into Metallica then they'd probably not have a huge interest in an acoustic.  I started on electric.  Electric is also easier to play, acoustic strings are generally a heavier gauge and the deeper body makes it harder for a smaller person.  Maybe 6 or 7 would be a good age to start, but it's important to have a genuine interest.

Yamaha FG700S

Obviously I like the natural colors...

I love the sound of the Yamaha acoustics, very close to the expensive acoustics but less than half the price.

I haven't played in the better part of 20 years. Never was the greatest (could play rhythm in my college band acceptably well), but enjoyed it. Had an early G&L ASAT.

Have thought about getting some gear again, but find it hard to find the time.  :-\

It's Black Slate. The color varies greatly under different lighting.

Just started taking lessons, along with my 12 year old and we share a Squier Affinity Strat.  I've discovered that all of those are not the same.  After 'playing' (twang...E....dud....A.....D!!!....twong) several different Squier Affinity Strats, some are just crap. And yes, I know you get what you pay. But you look at two in the store and one will have the edges of the frets sharp enough to slice your finger, mega high action and roughly sanded neck, while the other will be fine.  Thank you Made In China.  I thank the sales guy for picking the best one for me.

The wish list guitar is: a Gibson LP Traditional in a Light Burst.  But right now I would settle for another nice playing cheap guitar so I don't have to keep taking my sons to practice on.

Had some time so I rotated the collection out for their class photos.

Electrics:

- Warmoth parts LP with Seymour Duncans and seriously figured birdseye maple neck and fingerboard.

- Schecter PT. Ordered while on deployment and it showed up, half way around the world, in tune.

- Line 6 Variax 300

- MIM Fender Strat with Lace Sensor "Red" bridge pickup. Wine Red, despite what the crappy lighting would have you believe.

All played through either a Peavey Classic 30 112

...or a Fender Hot Rod Delux 112

...and sometimes a Line 6 PODxt Live for weird sounds.

There's also a Conklin "Groove Tools" bass

...and a bass rig. GK Backline 600 through a Hartke 210XL and 115VX.

Acoustics:

Gretsch Rancher. It's REALLY orange. But it sounds good and plays great.

Taylor 514CE, a high school graduation present lo these many years ago.

And a Manuel Rodriguez Jr. classical with a cedar top.

I like that Casino, my buddy has one and it's a ton of fun to play through a Vox AC30. Yamaha's really do sound great, I borrowed my friends all through college for recording projects, it was an auditorium shape but sounded much bigger.

Haven't played at all since summer of '09. I really miss it.

They are totally bad ass. I ended up trading it for the Clubman in the bottom pic cause I'd always wanted a Matchless. Biggest mistake ever. The Matchless sounded thin and anemic in comparison.

Here's the Greco described in this thread* (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=52796.msg970163#msg970163) - as you can see, no progress has been made, thanks in part to the small human wondering where the strings are.  It is more fun playing with him than old, beat up guitars...

Check out the nut - I got the guitar this way.  The story went that it was previously owned by a blues musician in Chicago - he fell on hard times (his custom nut company never got off the ground) and sold it to the person I bought it from.

Here is the oddball neck - laminated wood, attached with five bolts

If I actually need to make sound with a guitar, I use this one - early 90s G&L ASAT special (also a bit of an oddball, with a three bolt neck)

I also have a Frankentele made from parts, humbucker in the neck position, an Essex jazz bass, and my beloved no-name acoustic, the first guitar I got.  I play through a Blues Jr that has been worked over a bit, but I have been looking at the Blackheart stuff lately (anybody use one?)

There should be a wishlist section of these posts - here's a few on mine:
Girlbrand* (http://www.girlbrand.com/) - any one of these insane masterpieces would do.
Rickenbacker 360 - I love that blend knob
Guild Starfire - IV or V or whatever
Ernie Ball Axis - it is about as shred as I would ever want to get.
An LP of some kind - a really, really pretty one that I would look at more than I played.

That's a really unique nut.  I had to replace the one on my Les Paul and went with a graphite nut, I've seen bone used often too.

I usually replaced the nuts on my guitars to either bone or tusq and also swapped in graph-tech saddles for my Fenders. That cut way down on the broken strings.
