I just brought a 2012 Monster 696 from Munroe Motors in San Francisco. I am 26, male and this is going to be my first big bike. I can't wait till Friday when it's delivered!!!

I have about three years experience of riding smaller 250cc bikes. Any advice to a rider new to 696 will be greatly appreciated.

welcome to the board. make sure and get in touch with your local crowd over at the MOB (in the local clubs section.) if you haven't already, consider an MSF course.

I rode one of those before ordering my 796. Since you don't live near an Autobahn, consider having them fit a 14T front sprocket before you pick it up. There are overgeared to pass various European drive-by sound tests. You live in a built up area. Thank me later. ;)

ALSO, have them adjust the preload on the rear shock before you leave unless you weigh 250 lbs! (The rear sag should match the front.)

These bikes have more brakes than you are used to. Try two fingers on the front until you get the hang of it and ride with mellow, experienced riders out in the hills. Watch what they do and figure out the "whys".

Have fun..., and "rubber side down"!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I already put 105 miles on it in 4 days. I love this thing! ;D

Welcome! Definitely set the sag for the suspension - this is mandatory on most all bikes if you want them to handle properly. Sometimes they happen to be close to correct for your weight from the factory, sometimes not. Its simple to do.

Best recommendation is to just go ride and have fun! Don't be afraid of longer rides either.
