Title: Xoom or Ipad2?
Post by: TAftonomos on November 25, 2011, 04:41:36 PM
Looking at both.  32GB models.  I don't really care about the 3G, will be shopping wi-fi only.  If I need 3G, I can tether it using my jailbroken ip4.

Xoom on Amazon now for $400
Ipad2 is ~$575

Please discuss.  Only Apple product we have in the house is my ip4.  Wifey phone is android.  I'm planning on buying 2 tablets.

Seeing how some of the other manufactures are dropping their tablets (probably due to not being able to keep up with the iPad), you'd probably be better off with the iPad down the road from a support/life span point of view.  YMMV

As for the apps, can't beat the apple app store.

iOS is just apple, and that's it.  It's a lot easier to fix issues with that in mind.  Android differs so much in hardware, that os fixes are a pain in the ass in that respect.

Yeah the iPad does not support flash, but have you noticed how many websites are going non-flash now-a-days because of the success of apple portable products?

Those are just my opinions.

FWIW: I play with the apples, and work on a PC/BB.  Can't beat a PC/BB when it comes to actually doing work though.

All I ask from my apple products is for them to so what they're suppose to do, and I don't ask for anything more.  Now if the iPad doesn't already do what you want, leading to you having to jailbreak it....you might just want to stick with the android.

and then there's adobe abandoning mobile flash altogether:

I've been using Apple products since college in the early 90s and am biased but for a reason. People say I'm just buying the logo but I disagree, everything seems to run a bit better and Apple's always fixed my stuff under warranty. Construction is spot on, not gaps or glaring errors in build. The app store works because everything is quality controlled by Apple so most products work seamlessly.

I would compare it to buying a Ducati over another brand bike but on this forum that would be a moot point.

No question about it.  Apple's iPad.

The whole eco-system of apple products (software and hardware) and the seamless integration to each other is worth it for me.

hope to purchase iPad one day.

One more was mentioned to me, the Asus transformer.

Thanks for the opinions...keep'm coming.   [thumbsup]

I've used the Xoom for a bit but own an Ipad 2.  As mentioned, support is key when I made my decision and uniformity of operating system.  I don't give two bits about the Itunes store since my is jailbroken and I buy what I please, knowing I could crash my pad of course.  [evil]
The only thing that concerned me was the flash embedded websites but frankly unless I'm looking at porn I don't miss it.   ;)
Trust me when I say that I'm a magnet for shit going wrong with my computing devices and the two Ipads I've had gave me no trouble at all whatsoever.  Something to be said about that IMO.

I've got a Xoom and really like it, but I mostly use it for the Kindle app and some basic email.  I went with the Android platform because I live in Google Apps and already have an Android phone.  The gf has an iPad and it seems to be a better experience for basic use.  FYI - we're both on Mac laptops.

The other device to look at is the Samsung Galaxy Tab.  A colleague of mine raves about it.  I'd suggest figuring out what you plan on doing with a tablet and pick the best device for your needs.

I've got a xoom and bought it because it is an entire laptop replacement. It downloads torrents, fantastic battery life and all the other crap I need it to do to run my business on the go. As far as buying a tablet, I'd wait as the next gen of android tablets is a couple months out.

Thanks!

I have pre-ordered a Asus Prime (transformer 2?) tablet which is supposed to be out in 2 weeks.  I like the docking station/keyboard, and the fact I can do business related things easier with it (at least based on my research).

iPad. All others will go the way of BetaMax.

I had a first gen iPad and used it for my grad school work until I found out the college started using Flash in some areas. So I traded up for a MacBook Air, but will be buying another iPad for entertainment and mobile use. I looked at the other tablets recently, and everything else is still playing catchup with the iPad. Maybe I am biased because I started programming on an Apple, but have also programmed many years on Wintel PC's. So technical issues are not a real problem... that being said, I like how things just work on the iPad and you don't have to fiddle around with system settings and patches and upgrades and hacks just to keep the unit limping along.

Finally, I hate flash.

Agreed.  Flash seems to be only used for annoying ads anymore.  I'm happy to see it go.

One of the things that drives me nuts about Apple's mobile products is that they want to control EVERYTHING that goes onto your device.  Took me 4 hours to figure out how to load a movie onto my sister's iPad 2, because you have to make sure it's in Apple's file format and uploaded through Apple's management software (iTunes).  If you're a technogeek who wants to have the freedom to do lots of cool things with your device, you're basically going to want to jailbreak your Apple or buy an Android device.

One of the big effects of Steve Jobs on Apple's mobile line is that you know anything from Apple's mobile product lines will hold a consistent form factor.  Unlike the Android devices where the manufacturers are left to their own devices in determining things like screen dimensions and aspect ratios (not to mention internal components such as chipsets, etc), Apple has (or maybe had, depending on how their new leadership handles it) kept a lot of consistency between hardware generations, which has had the benefit of making applications a lot more consistent between various devices.  Apple is also very big on making sure that stuff works right when it hits the market - I think it was the Xoom who released their tablet with several of the features like memory card support disabled because they simply hadn't gotten them ready before the marketing team said it was time to ship.

I'd be leery of going with a tablet from someone who wasn't running Android or iOS.  App developers like market share, and apps are what attract people to the platform.  As for specific hardware manufacturers of Android tablets, you have to figure out what you want from your tablet and judge from there.

That's why I wnet android with my phone and tablet, iTunes became wayyy too much of a pita to deal with.
