Title: Should I ...or Shouldn't I ?
Post by: DoubleEagle on June 21, 2008, 11:14:04 AM
Since I'm riding my 1098 R on the srteet w/ the " race only " 102  decibel Termignoni  exhaust , ( really loud) should I leave the reflectors on in case I get pulled over by the law for something or take them off as we all do on our Monsters that have in most cases probably non legal cans. ? Anyone ever get pulled over for speeding let't say and get an additional ticket for no reflectors ?

Are reflectors a legal requirement?  My understanding was a manufacturer can't sell a bike without them, but it's not illegal to remove them.

If there is any money left after the purchase why don't you just set up a "ticket jar" on you nightstand or something. ;D
IT'S A 1098 R!

Relector-schmector

TAKE 'EM OFF!

I think you can just reaply them with two sided tape.

I just don't want the Law to have a reason to give me a ticket if they just pull me over to gauk at the bike . I was cited in April for Failure to Control when I left the road and smashed into a ditch. I've got 4 bikes and I don't need more points and insurance ramifications if leaving the reflectors on will negate.

It should be easier to avoid ticketing if you can manage to avoid getting caught in ditches....... I'm just sayin'..... ;D

Duh, if you're going to get tagged for excessive noise do you think officer Noslack is going to care if your reflectors are in place?  Geez, your ridding a bright red rocket with really loud jet exhaust!

+1 on the ticket jar..

Hypothetically, if you were cited,  wouldn't it be a non-moving violation anyway?  Just like a loud exhaust.  No points, no insurance worries.

I'm working real hard on that. I rode 96 miles on the 1098 R yesterday on my favorite road racing roads and did it at a sane safe speed and enjoyed it very much . So slower can be fun !

Good point . Hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks

My thinking towards the Police was....seeing reflectors , must not be a track bike !

A big fat "+1" there.

If your biggest worry riding a 1098R on the street is a fix-it ticket for reflectors... (if there even IS  such a thing)
Maybe you should consider an M695/696.   [roll]

Oh, BTW, if you don't already have a lawyer you should get one.
A 1098S rider here -with 20+K miles...  Get one.

Really.

One cop to the other: "Look at that Murphy! -That guy just merged into traffic on that ramp at 172.336 MPH with the front wheel in the air mid-turn!"
Murphy:  "Yeah, but he has all his reflectors securely in place.  Must be a good citizen.  We'll let him go."

From the sublime to the ridculous......I'm just thinking if the bike was let's say stopped at a traffic light and the police were across from you waiting to make a left hand turn , they might see the reflectors and not give it a second look.

This is pretty funny...worried about the reflectors while running modified race exhaust? First thing I do is strip the reflectors off the bike ...and my bicycles as well.

The cop should just be happy if you pull over.

I've actually had a cop thank me before for pulling over on my bike  [laugh]

I took the reflectors off my S4Rs as soon as I got it home and it's got a full Termi Exhaust without Baffles ...so I'm sure it's not legal but I never give it a second thought ?!

Most people, let alone cops know anything about your bike.  Ditch the furkin' reflectors, and should the question arise, use my line.....(sir, this is a one of custom....thats why it doesn't have _____ 8))

Most cops I have encountered(thrice) only run it to make sure it isn't stolen and has up to date insurance.

I guess I'm just being overly paranoid for some reason...kinda like I might be if I was driving down the Highway in a new Red " Arrest me Ferrari ! "
