Title: How young is too young to go for a ride with your Dad on his Duc.
Post by: brimo on November 29, 2011, 10:23:54 PM
After 3 days of Dad duty I'm bored shitless and want to take the bike out. Do ya reckon I could get one of those baby sling things and wear it under my jacket while riding? Bub is only 3 weeks old and so pretty small, I don't think the cops will notice. Please feel free to suggest anything.
p.s. It's 3 hours between feeds so the options for rides are a bit limited, masybe I could fill one of those "camelbak" things with formula and with a few diapers in the pockets a daytrip might not be out of the question.

You're joking right? ... At three weeks old, the slightest bump on the head, whether it is your fault or not, could cause irreparable brain damage. Seems like too much risk for a little joy ride. Maybe you could prop up a baby holder and have him watch while you polish the rims of your Duc.

Tank bag with the clear window for maps, poke a couple of holes in the plastic for some fresh air, bundle up the little one in a rug of some sort and whack them in, do up the zip nice and tight - job done.   [Dolph]

I'm clearly not a parent as I actually thought this was a good solution........

Exactly
He could end up like us.  :o

Seriously, bad bad idea. Car seats are heavily engineered for a reason, and the don't make one for  [Dolph]

Now that's not a bad idea you know, I could mount the baby capsule on the rear rack, use some zip ties to hold it on, or something.

ummmm lemme think....Social Services, divorce, supervised visitation, child support,,,,,,, if publicized,,,, death threats

the list is much longer than just this...surprised you even got as far as to type it out,

did any of these possibilities cross your mind while tapping out your madness?   [laugh]

maybe in a desperate circumstance in the TEOTWAWKI post-apocalypse anarchy this would be an option

do not drink a lot while kid-sitting...there is an old saying....What a normal man only thinks, A drunk man will do....

I can give ample attestations to the veracity of that maxim

Why don't you get one of those baby sling things and take baby for a nice long walk with dad.

Hang in there, it will get more interesting soon.

Screw that. I have 3 kids. There are backpacks to put the kid in. Make sure that he has some mini sun glasses (those are so cool). It also serves as a back protector.

I can't believe someone would have neglected to pack the styrofoam peanuts around that baby...callous indifference to safety I would say

Well if you really want to keep the baby safe, incase it in Carbonite.  Then you can go past the 3 hour window, that is if the baby survives the freezing process.

Short but true story: When my brother was born I was 16 months old. Mom and dad only had one car and when mom went into labor she drove herself to the hospital about 40 miles away in the city (Anchorage,AK). My dad and I showed up a little while later...and my mom finally asked how we got there...  Dad just stuck me inside his jacket and rode his motorcycle the 40 miles into town.   [thumbsup]

I've been taking my daughter on short rides since she was about 4 or 5. She's a natural..leans to the inside of corners, etc. After her second ride around the neighborhood her mom asked how it was.  She said "I was yelling in my helmet 'You'll never catch me coppers!'". (I think I'm going to be in trouble.) She falls asleep on the back sometimes though and that's pretty scary. I can hold her on with one arm, but have to shake her to wake her up so I can stop.

It doesn't look like there are any air-holes, either.  How irresponsible.

Alright, so the consensus seems to be she's still too young, I'll wait a week or two and use the simple but brilliant "tank Bag" idea, (thanks 620 dark) thanks for all your contributions.

(obviously I didn't put enough smiley faces or LOLs for some people in the original post)

Not a Duc, but...here's my son Hayden and I on his Honda 50...he was almost 2 yrs old here.  [thumbsup] He'll be riding it alone with training wheels and a limited throttle as soon as he can reach the pegs. He already gets on it by himself anytime he's in the garage and harasses me for a ride.  :)

...and I don't want to hear about him not wearing a helmet...we never went faster than his running pace, and he has one now.

I have a friend that had a harness to keep his son, who fell asleep regularly on the bike, on board.

I can ask the details if you like.

"I can almost reach right?"

Here's another idea.

It's only tested up to 140mph though so take it easy.

Does it look like this?

The photo is from a 1994 article in Motor Cyclist magazine on riding with kids; I can try to scan it if anyone is interested in what Art Friedman thought on the subject 17 or so years ago...
