So my wisdom teeth all popped through the gums and the top part is exposed. they are partially impacted as they point towards my molar, but they are not resting on it.
it used to cause a lot of pain in my gums, but since that part of my gums has fallen off and probably eaten along with my food, theres not much issue except later in the future.
so do i suffer the pain now, even though they cause no issues with me? or do i wait till later in life, if it causes pain with me?
the only thing that is bothersome now is that i have to spend an extra 2-3 minutes making sure i clean my wisdom teeth so i dont get trapped food there cause it stinks my breath!
i do feel like my lower jaw doenst liek to sit where it used to. i have to pull my lower jaw back for my teeth to fall into the their natural position. i think thats caused by the teeth pushing on my jaw. thats about the only reason i have for pulling them now.
I'd say the first chance you get, have em ripped out. If they are gonna hit sometime in the future, you might as well be laid-up at a time most convenient to you as opposed to when things do start hurting (say in the middle of good riding season).
Just based on your thread title: LATER! (more reason why when I'm on 'puter & not hen pecking on phone. Just don't book it tonight, I beg of you.)
As was said: Now, on your schedule. Give yourself a week to be laid up if need be. I've had friends at work the same day and fine and some that were out for a week and uncomfortable most of that week.
Do it yesterday!! I kept putting mine off and shit got way out of hand. Do it now before it becomes urgent. Nothing worse than being in horrible pain and it's a 2 week wait to see your dentist just to get a referral to see an oral surgeon who has a 4-6 week wait.
Had mine done on a Fri, was fine the next day. Back to work Mon. Dry socket was a whole other story though.
To those advocating "now":
It's HeMan, what could possibly go wrong? ;D
are you sure they'll ever have to come out? I get to keep mine.
Pay with cash, no credit card for you.
Pull them now and suck the gas like a bong before they deaden you. I chose no sleep option so I could enjoy the gas [evil]
Do it immediately if not sooner. Had mine pulled in boot camp and was probably the best decision I made. My pillow looked like a mob hit for the first three days after the surgery, but it was worth it.
when i first went to the dentist they said i should take it out however a nerve was right next to it, so they recommended me to an oral surgeon instead. said it might be compliated if they hit a nerve since my face would go numb. not looking forward to that. lol
Mine came in when I was 16(!) and got pulled out when I was 46 (last year)
It wasn't a big deal and I don't miss them. YMMV, but my take is you might as well just get rid of them.
And don't let them talk you into caps on any back teeth. Just get rid of them.
If I were you, I wouldn't pull 'em now.
Wait 'til you get to a dentist.

I got 4 pulled at the same time due to how badly impacted they were...
Just dont expect anything to taste good for weeks after due to the taste of the healing socket/medicine in the socket... and dont expect to talk to anyone you would want to sleep with you in the near future. The breath... it's going to be bad. haha.
But yeah, like everyone else says, get em pulled as soon as you can. Leaving it off will only let it get worse.
Do it yesterday. I had mine taken out when I was in the 6th grade and played a trumpet trio in front of the school assembly that night. Swollen cheeks and everything. Our band director pointed this out and commented how brave and amazing I was for even attempting to play the trumpet that night. I don't know what my mom was thinking for scheduling it on the same day as my band performance. She must have known way back then that I was a tough mutha. I've also had a cavity filled and a fake tooth put in on a tooth nub without anesthesia. True stories.
This is HeMan we're talking about, something is going to go wrong and he'll wake up to find the dentist screwed up and gave him a mouthful of horse teeth or something.
the longer you wait, the bigger they get
i've had 3 sets SETS of wisdom teeth taken out. the last go-around, i had waited a long time because a dumb-ass dentist told me it would never grow. a few years later, i was having headaches and getting sinus infections. the tooth had grown and migrated up into my sinus.
that meat is from the sinus wall. the two little brothers were sitting in the same pocket. all of this came from my upper right side. the left one is still there and i dread having to get it out.
Do Not Wait.

Funny, when I was a kid (sometime around the invention of dirt) as I began wearing braces they pulled some molars to make room but left my wisdom teeth. Guess they figured I would need all the help I could get in the "smart department". ;D Every dentist I have been to looks in my mouth and says WTF? They left your wisdom teeth? My brother has a friend that is a great dentist... and a great guy. Went to him when I lived in Austin in the 70s. He even filled a cavity on one of them. That also blows other dentist's minds. They all say they would have pulled it rather than go through the hassle since it was so far back. Having a big mouth helps! [laugh]

Gnarly dude. :P

Just do it now. I did all four in one sitting. I got the intravenous knock out method. Felt 0% pain and 100% high. The only annoying part is changing the bandages waiting for it to clot. I was eating steak the next day.
edit:
its called "conscious sedation" and its amazing.
Still have mine at 42.
They were a pregnant dog ten years or so ago. Now nothing.
They're probably so big now that they're rooted to my brain.
All of mine were pulled years ago.
Which I'm very grateful for, cause otherwise I'd be having nightmares of wisdom teeth eating my face like ducatiz's undead chompers.
:-X

+1 on this, I did the same, why go 2X thru with this ???
I got some channel lock pliers and some tequila - come on over!
More good old school thinking! [thumbsup] Besides, I love tequila and Channel Lock pliers!! [laugh]
When I got home from having mine done, I was still high as shit and very, very nauseated (always happens to me when I get put under). Walked in my front door, ran right to my office and puked in my wastebasket. It was wire mesh. [laugh] [laugh]

Seriously....
Get it done now. The Valium was amazing and the gas was even better. Going in and out of consciousness on the way home was terrific. The days following were dandy.
That doc jotted down prescriptions so fast the pad was smoking.
I had mine done at a new oral surgery clinic - when I went back for the follow up, they cut back some of the gum tissue to help drainage - it hurt like fury and pissed me off - as I left, I spit a huge wad of blood that filled up in my mouth on their nice new concrete sidewalk entry.
I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time. The VA did it for me, I had 90 days after I got out of the Army to get it done. It took longer for the novacain to take effect than it took for the dentist to pull the teeth. I have friends who were in agony for a couple of weeks and I was fine that afternoon. It can go either way.
You should have a poll.
boobies!
As the old maxim says..."if in doubt, pull it out"
In mid January of 98 my wisdom teeth were "talking to me", achey and painful.....I was due to fly to Antigua to get married on the 28th.
Fast forward almost 14 years and few flare ups since........
Only now I realize what they were trying to tell me. Those are some wise muther f-ing teeth! [bang]

Nope You aren't the only one.
That is pretty nasty

I think he's just been waiting years for a chance to work that picture into a topic and he's not going to let a golden chance like this go. Expect it to be derbyed at least 3 more times.
When he saw the title of this thread he must have been giddy with excitement. Giddy i tell you, giddy. Offhand, I've been waiting years to use the word giddy in a topic and I'm not about to let a golden chance like this go.
LOL!
Remember, I said I had 3 SETS of wisdom teeth removed...
yes, 3. They kept growing back, sometimes multiples (as above)
First set was out when I was about 17, second set when I was 28, third set I was 38.
I have a small box of teeth at home. About 16 of them.
They were amazed.

I'd do it now, had mine pulled at 19 (two at a time, two sessions) with only local anesthetic and it was not nearly as bad as I expected and FWIW was on a ship at sea (aircraft carrier) at the time...a good thing in some ways, the Navy dentist had probably pulled 10,000 or more of them so it went quickly and smoothly. Not much pain at all, the sound was the worst part for me :o
ssssllluuuufrrrpppppp
i dont like this one bit!!!
Builds Character [thumbsup]
in all of my tooth-pulling escapades, i was home that night on nice drugs. the most important thing to do is obey the doctor's orders. i got dry-socket on one go around and it felt horrible and the holes where the teeth were removed remained as open, gaping, putrid-smelling holes until they finally healed shut.
word to wise: no smoking after the surgery until they all heal.
the jist of my advice.. do it now, or suffer far far more later.
i brought this issue up to my parents....heres something funny.
The molar before the wisdom toot...mine has a root canal on it. my father had the same thing, my grandfather had teh same thing etc etc. none of them ever had their wisdom teeth removed....but they did get that molar removed and used the wisdom as one leg of a bridge.
so my dad says dont remove it because none of us have problem with that tooth (thats why it doenst really bother me) except for that molar that will break (which mine already has) so u will need the wisdom as an anchor.
interesting
Definitely DO NOT get them pulled. Like a fine wine aging to reach its fullest potential, this is a story that is years from excellence.
I am willing to wait.

the only advantage to doing this is the big script of oxycodone. my doc gave me a month's supply with 5 refills. i never used it at the time, but i got the refills. it is handy to have around.
but no, don't wait. after a certain point they can impact the jawbone and then you're in for a real dental torture session.
Why has this gone on for 4 pages...
Suck it up, Buttercup and get them fukin' yanked outta your head.
I got four pulled all at once when I was 14...
I was playing drums in an orchestra that same night.
Make a decision already...

Pull em all in one go. I remember doing it when I was 15, I woke up with a mouthful of blood for a week. Tasted like flat Dr Pepper. :-\
Had mine for ~22 years - they were all erupted and non-impacted. I have a big mouth and my dentist told me to not yank 'em unless I developed problems. Never had a single problem (but had a lot of sinus headaches) until I had one abscess this spring (silly me...thought it was a stuck popcorn kernel until I spiked a fever and hadn't eaten in two days because of the pain). Got the infection cleared up and scheduled myself for the oral surgeon so I could get the good drugs. I kid you not....ten minutes after I was out, they woke me up, minus all four teeth. They slid out like butter. Husband drove me home, I puked once after I changed out the gauze, and I had no swelling and needed no painkillers afterwards. I still have divots in my gums where the teeth were, but all in all a good experience.
The hilarious part? The husband doesn't drive (we rented an automatic to minimize his stress at driving my drugged self home)...both his co-workers and mine asked us if he was going to bungee cord me to the back of his bike to get me home, and how the heck was he gonna get my helmet on over my surgerized face. We still laugh at the mental image of that :)
Oh and the sinus headaches I'd had nearly daily for ~22 years? Caused by one of my wisdom teeth....now I only get the very occasional tension headache. Who'd a thunk????
What did people do about wisdom teeth a few hundred years ago? Must have been a miserable experience.

Most of your teeth probably rotted and fell out, then there would have been enough room for the wisdom teeth to erupt. (you didn't live much past 35 years so it was a miserable existence, but a short one)
