I read something on this last night. I could give a long explanation of why I think things like this are happening.

But I'll refrain.

Anyway, I give this thread about two pages before it's shut down. [coffee]

Wow, when I was in 8th grade, we did a singing theatre show and I did a barbershop quartet routine -- we had rehearsed it so we'd be singing "hello my baby" to our teacher (who was a super hot 20-something)..  Somehow, when we did the performance, she ended up sitting on my knee for most of the song.  When we had finished, I asked her something idiotic like "would you marry me?"

I should be UNDER the jail.

In high school, we had a substitute teacher fresh out of college, working on her intership... She was SMOKIN' HOT, and all the guys were fighting over each other to sit up front. If any of us could have gotten out tongues back in our mouths long enough to say anything, we would have all been sentenced to death.

Paging slowpoke...   ;D

On a serious note, this is complete bullshit.  Where will it end?

I'm a preschool teacher.  I have to change diapers.  Am I going to get sued/fired/arrested for checking to see if a kid has a BM in their diaper?  Being the only guy at work, I can't even say, "you look nice today" without fear of someone taking it the wrong way.

It's gotten way out if hand...  Like the vid says, sexual harassment is a very serious charge but it gets tossed around frivolously.   >:(

I'm going to get in on this before the lock.

I fully agree that the world is becoming unbalanced and it scares the hell out of me.  The coarse that society has taken seems to be; make thing that are unacceptable to acceptable.  So I try to relax and remember that God has a plan.
Title: Re: The world is becoming completely unbalanced
Post by: fastwin on December 07, 2011, 08:53:41 AM
I was just talking with a friend the other day about how many things that used to be acceptable are now not and how often the reverse is true. Sometimes that's good... sometimes not so good. I know things are always changing and evolving. As they should. You just hope that they change for the better. It hurts a little to see that is not always the case.

Being more toward "old fart" in age rather than the opposite you have more to look back on and compare. More stuff in the shopping cart. My teenage son's mindset goes back to the first Play Station. That's it. Everything I find currently unacceptable and goofy he thinks is fine. He doesn't know any better. And his world will come to an end if he doesn't get an iphone for Christmas. [laugh] All his friends and their younger siblings have all the cool aps. His aps suck. I feel his pain. ;)

Keep in mind when these kind of stories break we never learn all the facts.  It could be this boy was a little smart ass.  We all had an annoying kid in class.  This could have been the final straw after a long string of annoying comments.  But, I have to say this makes the school look very stupid.  Sexual, or any kind of harassment, in school  is a bad thing.  This was not sexual harassment.

Assuming ALL of that is true, there is no legal definition of "sexual harassment" that I know of that would apply to a young student like that.

The generally accepted definition of "sexual harassment" is "..intimidation, bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors.  (Paludi, Michele Antoinette; Barickman, (1991). Academic and Workplace Sexual Harassment.)

Someone explain to me how a 9 year old could be bullying a teacher in a sexual way by calling her "cute"..

It might be harassment of some sort if this is the last straw, but surely not sexual unless that was part of a slew of comments. With these stories, you never know.

I remember in College Chemistry, there was an annoying guy that always sat in front and constantly asked stupid questions, interrupted, etc.  The teacher was a short older gal that was probably awesome 20 years earlier.  One day as this ass was babbling away, the teacher calmly dumped a full titrating pipette of Sodium Hydroxide into his lap and calmly commented that he should probably leave and change is pants before the lye got to his privates.  Thats an effective way to handle harrassment, not silly assed legal action.

That's messed up.  So a boy is charged sexual harrassment when defending himself against a bully.  He was being choked and all.  So what about women's self defense class teaching people to kick the attacker in the nuts?  (I am working hard to get this thread locked, am I not?)  Would that be sexual harrassment?  In both cases, it's self defense.

My junior year of high school we got his new applied physics (read: dumb kid science class) teacher... Asian, about 5'7, just flawless.  Beautiful face, incredible body, graceful, fun... former college cheerleader, maybe 25 years old at the most.

Tienfong Ho.

Yep.  My smokin' hot physics teacher was Miss Ho.

my 10th grade math teacher was Miss McCann.  She was probably in her mid to late 20s.  5'6-5'7, fit, short/stylish haircut.  A little flirty and sassy.  She loved to wear short shirt and stockings.  I remember always sitting in the first row, right in front of her desk (well, actually just a table ;D).

Sure enough, I was in her pre-cal class in 11th grade.  In 12th grade, I took AP-cal with another teacher but I was the TA for Miss McCann.  I can still picture what she looked like 15 years ago.  [evil]  I am kinda curious to see what she looks like today (she'd be a sassy 40+) but I don't want to ruin the mental image I have of her back then.

On a semi-related subject, related only in terms of general stupidity, I saw a commercial for rechargeable batteries the other night (may have been Energizer).

In the blurb, they claimed that the batteries last eight times longer. OK, cool. Then they went on to claim that this essentially translates to eight times less waste going into the trash!

Hello, how about 1/8 the waste?!?  [bang]

Today the troublemaker in my daughter's kindergarten class got sent to the principal's office for his usual bullshit (he's 7, he's a bully, he acts out, takes way more time out of the class, etc.)

Rather than take his punishment, he bolted out of the principal's office, ran to the class, burst in the door, picked up a stick and beaned a random kid with it (smiling the whole time)

The random kid was my daughter.

He got a 3 day suspension.

I hope someone finds an excuse to punt this kid from school. If it's for sexual harassment for calling the teacher cute or punching a kid in the nuts... well, either would work for me.

As someone said before, nobody knows the backstory.

At 7 years old, a child definitely knows right from wrong, minimally in the context of a school room.

A suspension means he sits at home and watches TV, what else is he going to do for 3 days?

I work, my wife works.  What else could we do with the child?

Can you imagine how many schools would be sued?  Parents and lawyers would come out of the woodwork since the school spanked their perfect little messiah.

Most parents are clueless about their kids -- willfully so.

We just had a parent-teacher progress meeting about our little girl (2 yo).  It's a scheduled thign.

We were shocked to learn she is the sweetest girl in class, helps other kids, takes care of them, shares toys and has never once shown an iota of aggression!

At home she's a little shit!  Pinches her brother, won't share toys, etc.

Kids are bizarre things.

I hope your daughter is OK.  True about the back story, but that does not, IMO, justify the fix .  From the way you describe the offender (little bastard) there is an issue going on here.  If this child  (little bastard) is not dealt with properly more people will be hurt or worse.  A three day suspension clearly is not the answer nor is trumped up charges.

I am not going to pretend I know the answer in this case, but I do know this kid needs to be removed from the conventional classroom until, if ever, a behavioral solution is found.
Title: Re: The world is becoming completely unbalanced

The problem kid was already seeing two separate behavioral specialists, so it's not like the school isn't doing anything. In fact it's doing all it can for the bad kid.

Would that the same could be said for the other kids in the class.

I'm all for him getting the help he needs. Just do it far away from kids who want to learn.

As a nation we have spent the best part of the past century abdicating our responsibilities.

"I'm really busy. Besides, that's the ___________'s job."

Instead of dealing with anything as a family or community, simply turn it over to the schools, or the shrinks, or the courts...

Teachers are, by and large, good folk. However mass public education, as a system, is just another indifferent state bureaucracy.

I just think that if I had done something like this when I was in school, I would have gotten a "paddling" from the principal and then when I got home, my dad would have tore me up with a belt.

I think I did something like this only once.  My pop only had to spank me twice in my entire life.  That was enough for me.

Nowadays, the principal and my pop would have probably gone to prison.

When I was a kid in public school the Principal's paddle had holes drilled it so it made this bad ass sick whistle sound right before it popped you in the ass. But the big concern was what would happen when Dad got home! I will honestly say that I got far fewer whippings than I deserved. I'm way ahead of the curve on that count. [thumbsup] Hell. I still deserve a few! [laugh]

I feared my dad when he was angry at me.  He always gave me the chance to come clean, which mean no whipping, but I'd still get grounded.  Kept me on the straight and narrow for a long time, at least until I discovered booze, loose women and how to hotwire a '67 Mustang

I could go off on a long tirade about how much schools are trying to boost everyone's self-esteem while at the same time more and more behavioral scientists say the problem with sociopaths is that they have too much self-esteem.

But I won't.

You just have to settle for this short tirade: Things are make the beast with two backsed up and bullshit.

Wholeheartedly agree!
and meds

The winningest wrestler in my junior year of high school would go off his meds a few days before a match and smoke a cigarette right before.  I think he broke like 2-3 opponents ankles that season.  He wrestled crazy, like a monkey....

I love that audio vid of the school voice mail message. I don't even care if it's not real. I can't believe the bullshit I hear sometimes coming from other parents at my kid's school. I don't know where these folks grew up. Hell, they should be serving after school detention with their kids! It's unreal how deep the lack of personal responsibility runs in some families. And it just gets passed along to the kids and then to their kids in the future. [bang]

My wife and I both worked for years at the local county criminal courthouse. I can't tell you how many times we heard parents of young defendants tell us how their kid wasn't the one on the  security video tape robbing the convenience store. Even though they were arrested a 100 yards from the store with the gun and the money on them and there were half a dozen witnesses! "Nope, not my baby! He would never do something like that. Y'all are setting him up! That's not him in the video." Just unbelievable. [roll]

A third grader at my kids elementary school got expelled this week.  He got in a fight with another 3rd grader, kneed the other kid in the face three times before they were separated.  Kid had a broken eye socket.

Ug.

damn!

UFC FTW...   :-\

That's a bit brutal for an 8 year old.  I hate to blame TV, but where the hell does a little kid learn to do something like that?

I remember my first fight in grade school.  5th grade- 3 punches were thrown.  He hit me in the ear/side of the head, I punched him in the mouth twice.  Injuries- him: broken lip and a I had bruised ear.  My mom beat the crap out of me when I got home.  Pretty standard grade school fight...

Knees to the face seem like a bit much.

While the kid may have seen such things on the tube, actually doing them reveals a larger problem than poor entertainment choices.

On that theme

Lady Calls 911 Over Wrong Burger King Order (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ12Ry-hD6I#)

- Yay for the 911 operator

There's a longer version I've heard where the lady calls back, and gets the same operator. The lady threatens to block the drive trough and the op tells her she will send the deputies if she does that - to arrest her if she does that.
