Title: Garage organization - systems?
Post by: Slide Panda on January 04, 2012, 08:40:56 AM
So I've finally got me a garage. Once the DIY renovations are done on a bathroom are done (I'm really getting sick of laying tiles) I get to take on a bit of a fun project the garage.

Currently there's the crappy  50's era kitchen cabinets filling in for storage and work suface. They are gross, imbued with god knows what chemicals and crumbly. So they are going.

I'm looking at one of the modular systems - Gladiator, http://www.gladiatorgarageworks.com/. (http://www.gladiatorgarageworks.com/.) The look is a bit hokey with the diamond plate, but they seem well made, can be reconfigured at a later date if need be and offers lots of options.

Anyone know of similar products that might be a better buy?

Do you need closed storage like that?  I built wood shelves using 2x3s for horizontals and flooring wafer board for the shelves, 2x4s for the verticals.  With a 5ft span, I can put about 200lbs on a shelf.

are you thinking of going slatboard or pegboard?

Need - no. Like, yes.

With the stuff I linked to, they offer up rails so you don't need the sheeting.

I just did this, this past weekend. I did 8' long 2' deep and put some nice wheels on it in case I needed to move it for some reason. Works great with the 62 quart plastic bins you can buy.

I paid a company to build custom cabinets and spent less then those "premier" cabinets cost including installation. My water heater is in the garage and they just continued the cabinets to the back wall so the w/h has it's own cabinet with one large swinging door. Can't take them with me but they look clean, are well built, and are custom sized to my garage. Might want to check out vendors in your area. Mine was : http://www.were-organized.com/html/we_re_organized_southern_calif.html (http://www.were-organized.com/html/we_re_organized_southern_calif.html)

I like these for an affordable type of cabinet and drawer system.
https://www.sevilleclassics.com/ (https://www.sevilleclassics.com/)

If money is no option then I would get Lista.

Also, you need to check out this forum www.garagejournal.com (//http://) there are a ton of awesome ideas for everything from one car garages to huge custom workshops.

That little devil already hit me with a PM yesterday. And I'm about as far from southern cali as one can get in the lower 48.

Liking those Seville Classics. Prices are nicer, thought the prices on the Gladiator site are higher than retail. Still the Seville stuff has better prices - catch is getting it. I can go get the Gladiator stuff myself and it might cost me a uhaul van for a morning and a couple sixers. The reasonably priced 6' bench from seville goes from $230 to near $400 if I buy from them and have it shipped.

Seville lists a number of retailers. Any notions if Costco or Wally world stock the garage type stuff?

*edit - looks like if I go through Amazon, it seems to be $5 + 50 cents a pound for shipping. That makes it no terrible.. Now that bench is about $300 total.

The poster seems really happy with the quality of the Seville stuff.  If it really is that good, it's a screaming deal.  I used to sell Lista, and while it's very nice quality, it's very expensive.

I'm loving that cabinet with the work bench on top.

That thing would be 3-5K from lista probably

Yeah, they don't even seem to list anything quite that large, and the smaller ones that are similar are over 2500 depending on options. ooofa.

I've put a lot of research into the Seville stuff and I really have trouble finding a negative review. For stuff that is affordable it seems like the best of the bunch. I don't have the larger roller but the only complaint I've found is that the maple may be a bit soft but you could easily fix that with Plywood for a more robust albeit less attractive finish.

Anyone have FHE on the drawer-slides, are they bearings?

It seems so. Looking at the manual for one of the drawer units, the diagram loks like a bearing unit and the text says 'ball bearing track' in several places.

Yes - at least on the one I saw which was purchased a few months ago

edit: a call to the 800 number confirmed that they do have ball bearing slides but that the newer cabinets have smaller bearings - I didn't think to ask about weight rating as I am not planning anything other than hand tools for my setup.

my garage organization system:

Start piling in the back corner, farthest from the door. Once you hit the door, you have to start storing stuff other places  [thumbsup]

sorry, I really had nothing to add to this thread. I have shelves made from 2x4's and 1/2 in plywood  :(

My personal favorite....esp after having 4 kids move out and back and out again several times each with all their accumulated "stuff" left behind until "later"

stuff like that cheap as shit Ikea crap furniture that they didn't disassemble to move   ;D    that sits a'listing in the garage like ancient Carolina tobacco sheds

for real storage/organization I use those cheapo snap together plastic shelves at Home Depot...work fine and hold a shit ton of stuff without collapsing

I had a bunch of those but the parts that I have stored in the garage tend to be heavy (think of a box of crankshafts....)  That's why I built my own.  Cheaper per sq ft of shelf space and I was able to have them to go the ceiling (where I put the oddball stuff, like the collection of banged up gas tanks I'm slowly repairing and painting...)

There really is no substitution to building your own.  waferboard for floor is cheap per sq ft and if you get some plans off the web, you can put doors on it if you really need them.

I bought some industrial shelving from Lowes on sale similar to this -> http://www.lowes.com/pd_54003-1281-RL2408DE_4294857717_4294937087_?productId=3034705&Ns=p_product_prd_lis_ord_nbr (http://www.lowes.com/pd_54003-1281-RL2408DE_4294857717_4294937087_?productId=3034705&Ns=p_product_prd_lis_ord_nbr)|0||p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl_Free%2BStanding%2BShelving_4294857717_4294937087_%3Fpage%3D2%26Ns%3Dp_product_prd_lis_ord_nbr%7C0%7C%7Cp_product_qty_sales_dollar%7C1&facetInfo=

for under $200 at the time...I can't recall exactly what I spent, but they hold a crapton of weight....
