Hello everyone. I just joined. I am in Northern California. I am shopping for the best used Monster 1000cc+ I can find for $10k or less. I need to know what members consider to be the best used Monster (Air-cooled, water cooled, service records, etc). I have back issues, so it is between a Monster and Multistrada. Too old (58) to lean over the tank on a crotch rocket.
Thank you for this site.
Well, you'll get both sides of the air/water camp. Some folks think of the air cooled as the quintessential monster. Clean, clutter free. Also, the 2v monsters are less expensive to maintain. But, the water cooled ones were the top of the line and usually had the best spec suspension and brakes.
You'll be looking at S2R1000 or S4R - the number denotes valves. The S2R is air cooled, S4R water.
If torso lean is an issue, you'll probably want to avoid monsters with clip-ons. Most, not all, but most times they will be lower than stock bars.
After 2005, with the introduction of plastic tanks there's been issues with them swelling due to Ethanol. There's a lot of info on here about that issue.
Monsters from 2002 on should have 3 keys, 2 black, one red and a code card. If there's no red key walk away. They are used to reset the immobilizer system in the even it's tripped. Without you need to replace the dash, ECU and key set to the tune of $1500 to $2000 of parts.
The multi will be much more upright, and taller in the seat. It's not as sporting as the Monster, but can be quite fun. Some share the 1000 engine with the S2R1000, but a bit detuned. Later they replaced it with an 1100 engine for the Multi.
is being able to carry stuff a concern? Multis will be a lot better in that capacity.
You've got a pretty open-ended set of questions there. Might work beter if you point a couple finds and folks can give you the run down on a paricualr bike.
Welcome! And being seven years your senior, I feel your pain! ;)
An M1100 also seems to be highly regarded here and a clean one with minimal mods turns up from time-to-time under 10K. Worst case, you might have to travel south to find one..., but not THAT far.
Not sure but I expect you could also fit the riser from a 796 on an M1100 which is ~ 20mm higher. Broke my shoulder three years ago and found this essential as well as a Rizoma bar which is 5/8" higher than stock with 2" more rear sweep. Looks like this. No idea about an MTS as I'd need a ladder to get on one. ;)
Since it's January, take your time and find the right bike. Just ask questions here where there is a wealth of accumulated knowledge. Good luck!
hi! welcome to the dmf! :)
since it looks like you're from sac (i am also), i have a couple things i can throw in. a&s in roseville & good times motorsports on auburn blvd are the 2 local ducati dealerships.. good times usually has the cheaper costs on both new & used as well as service, but you probably want to check both places out..
if you are going to go the private party route to purchase your bike, the bay area craigslist tends to have a larger selection of bikes than the sacramento craigslist...
also, the 4th monday of every month they have a duc night at hot italian pizza downtown. the next one is feb. 27th. it usually starts at 6:30
in regards to the back issue, my ex boyfriend had broken his back years ago & has issues still because of it... he loves the riding position of the monster because it doesn't hurt his back
