Title: Recommend a new to me truck...
Post by: herm on January 31, 2012, 11:20:41 AM
My F250 is still going strong,....mostly. i don't think i have any reason to complain about annual repairs, given the truck is 13 years old and has over 230k on it.  but i am getting tired of how much diesel fuel costs (+/- .60 more a gallon than regular at the moment) and i sold my big travel trailer, so i don't need the towing capacity anymore. so,......

i can't afford a brand new truck, and even if i could i prefer moderately used. finally, i am partial to the following trucks;

Toyota Tacoma 07+ (at least extended cab....maybe crew cab.)
Toyota Tundra 07+ (extended cab)
Ford F150 07+ (extended cab)

anyone have any input?

I love my Avalanche.

Its ugly on the outside.  The inside is as nice as a Suburban, rides like one also.  My favorite part is being able to carry 4 x 8 sheets of plywood or 11' of trim, bone dry.  It will carry my ATV.....never tried putting more than one street bike back there.  Very versatile and reasonably priced on the older body style, up to 06.

I keep looking at diesel crew cabs, even had a guy that wanted to trade a long bed, lariat, f350 with similar miles for my Av.......couldnt get around the immense turning radius of the Ford......also it was the 6.0 motor without the head stud mod.

The Tundra is a nice looking truck, never been inside one.....

How much are you looking to spend?  What will you be carrying in it?

Good luck!

I am big fan of Ford's EcoBoost engines.  It first come out in 2010 in 2011 F-150s.  I know it's probably out of your price range but it's worth considering.

I know all the guys I work with love the toyotas (all but one of them drive them). Tundras or tacomas...though the tacomas seem to be more popular.

I've wanted to like them, but can't ever bring myself to consider buying one. I'm sold right up till I climb into one...every single time. The interiors SUCK. cheap plastic everywhere. That being said...all of our state trucks are fords, and the interior in those don't impress either  [laugh]

So there you have it: zero recomendations from me  [thumbsup]

BTW--I have a chevy silverado (2000 model). I would NOT recommend getting one. It's a piece.

2011 z71 4x4 crew can here.  I absolutely love it and it has enough guts to tow 9000 lbs with 17 city and 20-22 highway.  You'll have to get used to the 6 speed and if like me turning off the variable 8 to 4 pistons firing bullshit.

I currently drive a Subaru Baja...it does all the truck things I need currently, can pull a motorcycle trailer with ease...and gets relatively sane gas milage and has that all weather Subaru ability when the weather gets mucky....I quite frankly miss my old VW Rabbit Pick-up, which you can find em on Ebay if you search VW Caddy...and I want an Amorok, but I know I am not going to see that anytime soon...

I know none of this helps...but that is my .02...

Still love my '04 Ford F150 FX4 regular cab shortbox.  [thumbsup]

Bought it new, had it nearly eight years now and all I've done is change the oil and put gas in it. Sometimes I crave something that's better on gas, but it's paid for and it's pretty hard to part with something that's been reliable as an anvil.

'06 GMC sierra half-ton, extended cab, towing package 5.3l blah blah blah here.  I like it, it's hauled all my worldly possessions in a 7x14 enclosed... though it did struggle at times.

Tips:
-Get as many bells and whistles as you can afford.  It's amazing how the resell value is affected by things like power locks that only add about $500 to the upfront cost.
-4wd is nice to have.  I don't have.  I wish I did.
-Diesel.  If you plan on towing anything, ever, get a diesel. My milage drops by 10 mpg pretty easy when I'm towing, all because it doesn't have to torque to run at the peak of the power curve when loaded. GMC/Chevrolet make a damn fine diesel these days.

I replaced my truck and my wife's car with her Q5 and a trailer.

So maybe just get something that has a decent tow rating and just do the truck duties with a trailer.

Either get a crew cab or extended cab.  The standard cab is ok for work, I guess, but you have so much more flexibility even with an extended cab -- tools, cargo, passengers.

It's a damn shame that a small diesel hasn't made its way into a F-150 or a Tacoma (like the Hilux) yet.

You are looking at the same trucks I want. I've decided in the F-150 with 4WD. Not sure on extended cab or double cab...maybe a King Ranch if I get lucky ;D

Couple things...

First, I've had an extended cab Tacoma for about 4 years now and have absolutely zero complaints about it.

The only thing I've done to it is buy a battery, change the oil, and put gas in it.  And it has 130K on the clock.

Second, a big +1 on the only get 4wd comment from 'tizzy.

My work truck's a rear wheel drive dually and it gets stuck in an eighth of an inch of mud if it doesn't have any weight on the back of it.

I've got a 2002 Nissan Frontier xeV6 "Desert Runner" with the King Cab.

I've beat the Hell out of it for 205,400+ miles...

Sometimes I remember to change the oil... usually don't.   :-\

Only thing that broke was the original timing belt at 196,000 miles... oops.

I've driven it sideways and over jumps in the desert, hauled 3 motos in it, and one time, dragged a stalled 18,000lb school bus out of an intersection...    :o

It's still on the original clutch.

I'd get a newer model one in a heartbeat if/when this one decides to finally shit the bed.  [thumbsup]

Just my $0.02.   YMMV

Good luck in your search!  [beer]

Interesting.

I've always thought the Titans looked like nice trucks, but I've never heard anything about them--positive or negative...

same with the frontiers. Sounds like yours is good. I do know people love Xterras, and I think they are basically the same?

A couple things.

Used Tacomas are like gold on the used market.  They don't stick around very long and sellers usually get what they are asking for them.

Toyota started using the SAE J2807 Towing standard for the 2010MY.  All other manufacturers (to my knowledge) are not adopting that standard until it is required for the 2013MY.  The SAE standard actually has real world testing parameters, like driving up a long grade at a set speed, holding a load on a set grade for a set period of time, etc.

I'm currently driving a '12MY Tacoma 4X4 Double Cab as a demo.  It will go up for sale in the April/May timeframe and will probably have 5-7K on the odo at that time.  PM me if you want more details.

Once the lease is up on my A3 I think I'm going to buy a Tacoma.  The 2012 has some nice technology additions but the interiors were designed by Ikea.  Hopefully they're less spartan in about 32 months.

Used?  All your choices are good.  Condition is the most important criteria.  Lethe's idea is also worth serious consideration, a good car and a trailer.

2001 Nissan Frontier crew and have had basically the same experience.  148k miles.  The only things that have failed was one O2 sensor and thermostat.  The front window regulator was replaced under warranty in 2002.  Still on the original clutch.

I did drive a rental Titan once and thought it was the biggest pile of crap I've ever driven in my life.  Interior was rattling around and the handling was all over the place, but then again it was a rental.

I forgot that you were a Toyota man.

So I've got to ask...

DUDE! What is up with Toyota interiors?????????????

I want to like them so bad, but I can't get over the insides. I'm not sure if it's because we own 2 german cars or what, but I expect more for 30-40k when I'm buying a car or truck. The only one we checked out that approved of was a loaded up Venza...but it was too mini-van like for my wife  [laugh]

I'm just curious if you have some insight? Because I'm seriously considering that new AE-FS-GT-86-63-Whatever. The new RWD coupe...but I'm going to be upset if it's made out of kleenex boxes on the inside.

Back to trucks---I heard the next titan might be available with a Cummins deisel. I think I read that on Autoblog. If so: AWESOME!

I sat in a production version of the FR-S last week.  It's extremely nice.  I think you'll approve.

Have you seen the new Camry's interior in person?

As for the Tacoma's interior...it is a truck after all.  I'm driving one now, and have driven at least 4 or 5 of the current version as demos since it launched in '04.  I don't see a problem with them.

I've also seen some of our upcoming product.  Get ready.  Toyota is coming back.  In a big way.

I've been looking forward to that car for a long time.

I haven't looked at the Camry...not really my kind of car. We stopped looking after we bought the wifey a TDI Jetta wagon. She was going to wait for the new Passat, but got too ancie-pants. I wouldn't go for the sedan jetta, since VW cheaped out on their interiors too, but the wagon is still the old style.

Since I'm looking now, and the family hauler has been purchased, it's all sports cars and pickup trucks!!!!  [laugh]

Got tired of fixing it.  Parts are just too hard to come by and it's a rwd only.  Plus, it's a bona-fide antique and i really felt weird shoveling manure into the back of it ... LOL

The motor is a great one, but Mitsubishi all but closed up the parts supply from Asia on that engine so I had to order stuff from the equivalent of Auto Zone in Thailand.  ugh.

I need something a little easier to work with.

I have an 07 Tundra, which is just after the remodel.  Pretty happy with it, but I bought it used and it came with the extended bed AND the xtra cab or whatever it's called.  A bit of a pain in the ass to park at times, but super handy.

It has the big v8, so power is phenomenal.  Excellent power, good ride, fantastic brakes, good looks.  If you get a great deal on one, I'd pull the trigger.

Having said that, I considered selling it and getting something different, only because it's a bit more than I need.  I'd like a shorter bed, as I don't typically haul stuff.  But it's paid for so it stays.

Otherwise, I don't know that it's significantly (or at all) better than a Ford or such.  Personally I'm not a GM fan, but I'd go Toyota or Ford myself.

So maybe just get something that has a decent tow rating and just do the truck duties with a trailer.

^ This has merit, if you're not really using a pickup hard.

I've been toying with getting a new Jeep Wrangler and a bigger utility trailer, since these days I'm lucky to actually use my F150 to its potential maybe three or four times a year. But, as stated, the truck's paid for, reliable, blah, blah, blah...

yeah, i've gone back and forth on that.  i have a trailer, but really it's a pain.  despite it being an "air hauler" most of the time, a crew cab truck is actually pretty useful.

Our special forces use supercharged Tacomas.

If you are looking for a smaller truck, the Tacoma can't really be beat. Though they demand a small premium, even for used.

i bought mine new in '07 because all the used ones of the same body style were selling for about the same price.

used with 30k miles for $25k or brand new for $26.3k out the door? easy decision.

5 years later, i see my year/model selling used for $17-20k...

I have a 2006 Tacoma 4X4 and love it. other than maint stuff the only problem was a front wheel bearing. When I first got it i figured the seats wouldn't last a year (cheap fealing) but have taken several long trips in it and no issues.
My wife even likes it and she wanted an SUV so the first year she hated it since it wasn't her choice. She came around

I hate my step-daughter's, handles like a garbage truck, the steering is very sloppy and gets fuel economy I'd expect from a V8 not a V6  [thumbsdown]

while I concede on the front of it not being a fuel economical vehicle, and certainly not a looker...they are more reliable than the Pilot accoring to various industry counterparts ( says multiple Honda dealer counterparts to me) in comparo...they do haul as large a load as a Tacoma or Frontier easily...both in towing and in bed loading...and they can very comfortably haul 4 passengers and their lugage or anything else needed without issue.

At that point you're better off getting a full size double cab truck.

Smaller bed, 4 full size passengers, and full towing capability.

Our special forces use supercharged Tacomas.

Not really.  The HiLux is a different truck than the Tacoma.

They do buy US spec Tacomas for their use as well.

They buy HiLux in other countries to fit in with the bad people they are trying to catch.

There is a reason the bad people use Toyota trucks to get in and out of hard to get to places.

None of the teams that I've worked with have used them stateside. The HiLux is a different story though. I've been in them throughout Africa and Asia.

Under special forces use. I just remember this because my research on my pick started with Wikipedia.

If it was easier, they would just use the HiLux...I know I would [drool]

Also, the TRD version is cool because you can call it the turd.

04 ford f150  137xxx miles  purchased 3 years ago with 40000 miles for 10,000 i use it every day to cart me and my tools to work and back.  love the truck feels and drives solid. despite having to rebuild the transmission at 97,000 miles i would recommend one to anyone.  coworkers have tacomas and tundras  nice trucks but mine is better.  4x4 is a must on any pickup if for no other reason than it's fun in the snow.

$10,000 is a great price for a used truck with that many miles. It seems like the average for that around here is $16,000 in good shape.

we had a tacoma and upgraded to a tundra. both were extended cabs, but the tacoma wasn't enough truck. what if you decide you want to plow snow with it? haul motos? the tacoma did these things, but the tundra has an easier time.

what if you want to mount SAMs or pull a tank?  Tundra = Fail.  You better get one of these:

3 years ago,...lets see....cash for clunkers was kicking in...gas was pushing $5 a gallon and people were freaking out and dumping trucks and SUV's that were not necessary and were gas guzzlers for roughly about 60% of what their top of the market value was....that is IIRC....so it sounds about right...

this is the only reason i haven't decided on the Tacoma already...
in fact, the Tundra and Tacoma are priced very close right now in my part of the world, so the biggest difference is coming down to fuel economy, and even that is not all that far apart.

i have heard great things about the Ford "eco-boost" but thats way outside my price range right now...

I have a 2007 Tundra ext cab with the TRD package. I echo much of the same sentiment here, wish it was a 4x4. Otherwise my truck is solid. It tows cargo and trailers with ease. It has a great tranny and a very strong motor, think 400 lb feet of torque and 380 hp. More than enough to keep you rolling down the highway at ease even with a full load.

I have found the traction control system to be very, very good. It senses any excess wheel spin to any wheel and immediately steers you right by applying ABS to that wheel to settle things down. Works great in wet and icy roads.

The only down side is that this is currently my only vehicle so fuel economy is not so great, about 16mpg on average but I do have oversized wheels on it.

Best of luck.   [thumbsup]

it actually has two. one in front of the cabin air filter (lockable) and another right above that. the second one is not lockable, and is the perfect size for a care bear.....without any chance of blocking the filter.
