funny, i just added that to my queue on netflix.
one of my really good friends rides with those guys.
Big city fixie riding is nuts. And fun. I used to love it in downtown DC, even though I definitely rode at the more timid end of the urban fixed continuum.
I use to be a nyc bike messenger back in early 00's.. less bike lanes then now.. never used a helmet.. never said I was sane..
Last year one of these fixed gear fools (no brakes if you didn't know) tried to bomb down one of our not so insignificant hills and misjudged his ability to turn at speed. He flew about three lanes worth after hitting the concrete median. Landed on his head (no helmet, wouldn't look cool) and his buddies had to hold it together (literally) while we waited for paramedics.
I'm all for extreme sports, fast rides, bikes, skates, boards, whatever. But a little common sense goes a long way.
Yea i'm smarter now.. never used fix gear, you can only do so much..
I might do it just to ride to work but im not booking it to work in the am..
I used to road race in the 70s and early 80s. I still have my early 70s fixed gear Schwinn Paramount track bike that I used on my Cinelli rollers during the winter to work on my spin. Never liked the idea of riding a fixie on the road in Austin, TX traffic and hills. No bueno. [bang] I'm still alive today because I stayed indoors on the rollers. [thumbsup]

For me, riding fixed in traffic (with a front brake, which I removed for racing on the track) felt very much like whitewater kayaking; you're part of a flow that doesn't give a crap about whether you live or die, that has eddies and seams between currents, slow spots and fast chutes - and how you ride it is entirely dependent on your skill, experience and understanding of the structure of that flow. And - just like on a motorcycle - your ability to see the world several moves ahead leave yourself an escape if the situation suddenly takes on a different shape than you expected. For me, climbing hills on a fixie is brutal but more fun than weight training, and downhill does wonders for your ability to spin the pedals at high rpm.
I kept thinking chicks would dig it, but not so much. ;D

Of the fifty or so I've stopped and talked with, no brakes. They try to give me the "initiate a skid," routine but I've even had one answer, "I couldn't stop," when I asked why he didn't pull over immediately. We don't catch the smart ones.
^^50 cyclist....a lot of crime in that town. Watch out for them pesky skateboarders.
Just saw the vid.. film work was good.. liked everything else to.. still not as dangerous as nyc..

LOL. They ride in packs, that's like 3 stops. Skateboarders? They get a pass. At least they aint out burging cars.
