Title: Build your own still thread.
Post by: brimo on February 23, 2012, 02:24:19 PM
Been looking at these designs, http://moonshine-still.com/table-of-contents/ (http://moonshine-still.com/table-of-contents/)  got the skills, got the tools.
Any thoughts and/or suggestions?

Any thoughts and/or suggestions?

I was about to say "Don't post evidence of legally dubious activities on a public forum" but then I remembered you're not from the U.S.

So instead my suggestion is "give us a detailed build report, so us Stateside folks know exactly what to never ever do, lest we accidentally end up with booze." ;D

You can get a home distiller's license in the US.  I forgot the quantity limit, but its something like 100 gal per year max.

Some states also have brewer's licenses so you can't even make your own beer without paying the taxman, mostly north eastern states.

How would one make mash if one was so inclined?  I've read about graduated sugar and turbo yeast but what about fruit based shine?

There are a ton on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=copper+still&_sacat=See-All-Categories (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=copper+still&_sacat=See-All-Categories)

You might be able to steal some ideas from them.

After taking a couple organic chem classes I really wanted to build a still and try my hand at making Bourbon.  I decided that I wouldn't have the patience needed to let it age properly and quickly gave up on the idea.

Maybe one day...

good luck and don't forget the cure for methanol poisoning is drinking more booze... pretty much a win win!   [drink]

I had read, at some point several years ago, that one could get a license to produce small quantities of fuel alcohol. I've never heard or read anything that definitely said drinking alcohol could be legally produced.

The Alcohol Tobacco and Trade Bureau has an application on their site for the production of ethanol for fuel:  http://www.ttb.gov/forms/f511074.pdf (http://www.ttb.gov/forms/f511074.pdf)

(Not to redirect this or anything. I'd still really like to see the equipment put together by those of you in locales that permit such things.)

I was wrong about spirits.  It is limited to beer and wine.  There IS a way to get a license to do it, but the requirements are onerous.

This is the still I did not build http://moonshine-still.com/valved-reflux-still-head/ (http://moonshine-still.com/valved-reflux-still-head/)
it does not produce about 95% pure alcohol.
I do not then filter through activated charcoal and cut with distilled water.
I do not know that there a a number of tricks to prevent splitting headaches from the fusil oils etc. (heads and tails)

My understanding is the alcohol has to be cut to around 50% before filtering through charcoal.

You are correct, I was just tossing that out and didn't pay attention to the order I had placed the "polish" step in.
You do need to cut 30-50ish% and then use the activated charcoal.
only for neutral spirit though. if I were to do a schnapps or whiskey I would just watch my temps on the still
and remove the heads and tails at the correct time and skip the polish to retain the taste.

In other countries home moonshin'in is legal.
(I remember walk past a store in Germany, with a whole window full of baby stills [on sale even])

QuoteA sensation at every party. You just fill a 3/4 bottle of cheap dry wine in the flask...........
Fresh homemade brandy.  ;D
Hey DP you wouldn't happen to have sampled any Boones Farm wine (using that term very loosely), this might have helped  ;)

You can have a still in the US. I have one. Just don't get caught making spirits of any kind. Most states don't have laws against homemade spirits; Its the Feds. why/how would they ever know what you do in your own home?

The Feds do allow you to distill alcohol for use as an automotive fuel.  Of course, local laws may not allow this.

A permit is required:
