Today I did something I've wanted to do (and been trying to do) for a long time.
It went something like this:
I, Theodoros Nicholas Aftonomos, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the state of Georgia against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the Governor of Georgia, as well as the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
BCT is March 27th, so while you guys are having copious amounts of alcohol with each other, swapping riding stories, and figuring out what bike(s) to buy next...My old (34) ass will be face down in the muck, doing some PT each day and trying to learn to be a soldier.
I went 09S, and OCS is 01/13.
I get to keep my ATC job, do something else on the weekends.
I hope to be an Aviation Officer/IP, failing that I would elect armor or engineering. To say that I'm excited would be the understatement of the year.
Good luck and thank you for protecting all of our lazy a**es
Congrats! Now in Engish what is 09S?
Commissioned Officer Candidate
If he passes class, then he gets his butter bars
I got the officer part from OCS. Still does not translate O9S.
Congrats!! [thumbsup] [beer]
congrats and +1 on thanking you for putting your ass out there to protect my lazy one...

Thanks, mang. :)
thank you. [thumbsup]
Great, just what we need another, make the beast with two backsing lieutenant. ;)
Thanks!
[thumbsup]
09S = contracted to head to OCS after Basic. Since I've got some college under my belt, and I'm old (34), I thought this would be better for me. Younger I would have chosen differently.
Hold the thanks until I get done, singing up was the easy part I'm sure. The start of a new/additional life "chapter" is exciting. [thumbsup]
Mouth shut, ears open, same with my mind.

Oh come on...if it wasn't for the El Tees, who else would us NCOs have to clean up after? ;D
[beer] Grats and thanks T!

Any advice, stories, or other tidbits of knowledge you guys would like to offer up would be greatly appreciated. And I mean that! Not just BCT advice either, but after that!
I secured a copy of an Army FM pertaining to land nav. Been going over that the last few days, and father in law (USAF ret) has offered to mentor me this weekend on it so I can at least have a solid academic undestanding of what it is/how to use it. Hopefully that will help a bit with the practical side.

be able to do 40 pushups without getting too tired. Also some 3 mile runs. Do them so that you don't get too tired. Maybe start doing pull ups as well. All this will make life much easier. While in Basic try not to do anything too good or too bad. just sort of blend in. if they aren't all over your case right away as an OCS candidate you might get by for a couple of weeks relatively un noticed. Save the getting Noticed stuff for for OCS.
Be prepared to be treated like a teenager. You will have to get permission to do pretty much everything so keep that in mind. The first few weeks are the worst. After the 8 or 12 weeks or whatever your program requires these days, the twilight zone ends, and life will return to somewhat normal. You only have to do boot camp once. Keep remembering that.
Doing boot camp at 18 is most likely easier that at 34.
Good Luck Theo.

That is why I'm giving the extra advice. I would have a hard time with some of that stuff at age 42 and I went through it already.
Thanks for the advice! I'm not expecting easy, but I'm not your typical out of shape 34 year old either :). Already being part of the govt (albiet civ) for the past 6 years has at least partially prepared me for the mental suck that I feel is coming. In fact, at 18 I doubt very much I'd have the determination to complete much of anything...
Thanks for the PM's too guys. Got back from a 5 mile'r this morning. Now work, then crossfit afterwards and onto my extended walk in boots with a weighted pack before dinner. I want this.

I did it at 28 and it still kicked my ass. But I think that's the point.
I did it at 18 and it was easy. I was used to say sir yes sir to my dad and being subservient. [laugh]
Sgt Shaw would yell and stand very close so he could spray your face with spit. He would yell that he missed being able to hit us. Instead, he would stand on the tops of your boots and scuff them up. Then punish you for their condition.
Good Luck!!
