As The Title Says... Just Click Away Folks
Option 1: Leaking Gas Tank
Option 2: Rear Base Gasket Leak
Option 3: Battery Leak
Option 4: Tach Stopped Working
If I missed anything please let me know. Those were just the most common things that popped into my mind. I love my S4 and really have had an overall good experience with it. Its not my first Ducati so maybe I knoew what I was getting into, which has limited my pregnant doging, but I was just curious how many of you S4 owners have encountered these issues.
Heath
Speeddog will chime in I am sure with a few more issues ;D
Flames.
That was a bloody shame Rameses :'( . Seriously gave me shivers. have a [drink] for me my friend.
Just the infamous gas tank hinge leak so far which, thank God, didn't turn into Rameses' situation. :o
-My bike has been good to me (knock on wood). The S4 can be quirky, but I like the fact that it's the only Monster w/the 916 engine, which is a classic IMHO.
should have done more research before i bought my a S4. Seams like everytime i get on here their someone with something wrong. now everytime i ride it i think something else is wrong with it.... I i think i smell someting when the motor is running. Like its running too lean. Althought im no motor head have have no idea how to tell. If you rev it up, you can see some black smoke, and every 15 to 20 second at idel it bogs down for just a sec... So who knows... [bang]

Swap that over into a thread, and we can talk it through with ya. ;)
Leaking battery.
Rear base gasket leak.
ECU went kaput.
No tank leak.
No flaking rockers, at 24k miles, anyway.
Mine crashed, but that might have been operator error... [laugh]
Luckily no real damage though...
Leaky tank, too, but then my 02 750 also had the dreaded tank leak...
Fuel level sensor wires pinched on vert head - on back order since early May.
Bad coil.
Clutch slave.
No rocker or gas tank issues yet. only 8K miles
Coming on 15,000 miles, the issue with the fuel pump wiring, fixed by putting a 3/8" spacer under the rear of the tank and 1/8" spacers under the front rubber mounts, and side stand switch took a dump. Other than that, oh yeah, broke a chain at the MotoGp at Laguna, which took out the rear Carbon Hugger, but didn't hit the cases (I got real lucky on that one), replaced it with Stealth front and rear and DID ZVM. I ride it every day. It's a blast. I was regretting buying it when the wiring issues were happening, but I'm having fun now. Still don't really trust it yet, though. In retrospect, it was a good idea to take it to Monterey in the truck. My buddy let me ride his 09 Ultra Classic Electra Glide to the races. I bet that sucker had at least 65 hp and only weighed about 900 lbs.
Melted rectifier plug and intermittent tacho
With all these leaky tank issues, what are you guys doing about it? just cleaning up the drippings? having them welded? letting the gas coat your frame?

Since your leaking tank will only get worse, you need to fix it. Often the leak is at the hinge. The best repair is to braze the hinge and treat the tank with POR 15. The best way to do this is send the tank to ducpainter http://www.frostysfinishes.com (http://www.frostysfinishes.com) and top the repai off with some great custom paint [thumbsup]
base gasket rit'cher. Tachy is acting up, but the guys on the boards seem to think it's my ill battery, let's hope their right. Other than that, I bought it used, a salvage with minimal damage. Just the usual service etc.
Swollen tank
TPS outta whack
Seat cowl rubbing on factory turn signal stalks
Ugly factory mirrors
Ugly factory exhaust
Horn that thinks it's a pantomime artist
Front tire coming up
Hot chicks won't leave me alone
elaborate on this TPS, sounds similar to what I'm dealing with.

Sometimes the bike dies when the clutch is disengaged and I "blip" the throttle a few times. This is really a pain if I'm getting ready to make a quick right on red. Also, the bike ran really rough at very low parking lot speeds.
I took it into a dealer who fixed it under warrantee and said it was a TPS adjustment. The adjustment took care of the problem, but now it's coming back. Seems the TPS needs adjustment about every 2500miles or so.
I've got a 2002 S4.
No real dramas to date.
I was having problems at one stage where the bike would die at lights when idling if the temperature was in excess of 100C. I had that 'corrected' when the bike was serviced - I can only assume a TPS adjustment was done. Anway, the bike started dying at 70C and greater - really dangerous when your moving at low speed.
I removed the crankcase breather to clean up the tail up the tail of the bike a few weeks back - and the bike no longer dies at any temperature. Problem solved! Just not sure how. [beer]
I have had the base gasket leak , terrible handling problems now solved and changed 8 opener rockers all flaked ,but the bike is a keeper I now love it as much as my other Ducatis.
2002 S4 13500 miles. Owned 7 years.
Tank hinge leak
Rear base gasket leak
Fuel sender failed
Clutch drum wear needed new one
A pin/screw undid from the crank and started to wear through the main bearing = rebuild.
BUT No flakey cam followers or anything else wrong found while it was in bits and it now has a new rear gasket.
Completely insane cost to maintain (It's serviced every year) could not recommend it to any sane individual.
But I like it! [evil]
Ground on horns
Regulator burned/overheted (also melted the engine air box)
ECU replaced/remapped (at low idle it was dying especially at red lights)
Currently will not start, battery bad or bad ground or bad stater motor
got her with 19k miles, she at 25k miles appx
my S4 has been very reliable ,its heavily modified , it needed 5 new rockers at 4000miles but since then no problem, now 30k its been all over Thailand , cambodia etc ,, had to replace a burned out regulator , TPS is a regular maintenace chore to set ,replaced battery twice dur to they get tired after 3 -4 years , clutch wore out ,
Its a great machine ..

lets add::
breather(overflow) inner tank tube cloggged; unclogging in progress
Low fuel sensor cracked inside the tank; being replaced with new
tank shows minimal rust/wearinside; will get treated
horrible stock headlight brightness; corrected with headlight wiring kit from Easter Beaver
Tiny squicky horn; corrected with Easter Beaver hi power horn kit and a big boy horn.
Will get her a slipper clutch once she behaves healthy for more than 2 months [popcorn]
