It would seem that a lot of riders here in Victoria are a tad pissed off with the latest TAC adverts aimed at Motorbike safety. I haven't seen them as I don't watch much TV but it seems that they purport all Motorcycle crashes to be the fault of speeding riders rather than the car driver's inability to open their eyes >:(
So I'm passing on this petition information for all Vic riders to sign. Cos I'm sick of bad car drivers and lack of road maintenance regardless of adverts.
I'm not sure if people outside Vic signing the petition counts but I reckon it should seeing as you ride down here too (on very rare occasions [roll])
Go here to sign: https://www.change.org/petitions/tac-victoria-get-real-about-rider-safety (https://www.change.org/petitions/tac-victoria-get-real-about-rider-safety) [thumbsup]
And feel free to share amongst your riding brethen.
Heather, good onya for bringing this to our attention.
I thought I would have a look and sign this petition simply because I do, from time to time, visit Victoria.
But the page wont load.
Dont panic, I think the problem is at my end (I think).
Mmick
Hope you can get it to work Mick. Works okay for me. Maybe it knows where you live [cheeky]
Signed
Thanks Heather.
That add really shits me.
signed and shared shitloads!! [thumbsup]

Yes that add really got on my goat as well.
Signed, and added to facebook.
signed and I hope to rectify the Vic riding absence.
FWIW, the offensive ad is here:
Motorcycle Reconstruction - TAC tv road safety commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT666XwJR2s#)
To continue the commentary from the ad:
Alternatively if the motorcyclist was travelling at or below the speed limit ... the car hesitates ... notices the bike is travelling slower and pulls out even later - rider has less chance to react ... result - WHO THE make the beast with two backs KNOWS!
Its all well and good to play hypotheticals ... but at least apportion blame where it truly lies. Speed will always be a 'factor' make the beast with two backs-knuckles - without movement you can't have a collision ... but if people ride/drive with respect there will be less incidences.

+1
Petition signed.
If the rider had been slower when yet another inattentive make the beast with two backsWIT pulls out then maybe the outcome woulda been different.
No shit Einstein.
Of course if the inattentive make the beast with two backswit actually gave driving a motor vehicle the attention it ought command.... then the outcome woulda been different too.
Guess - as we all know - when you're involved in a collision on a bike... it doesnt matter who's at primary fault, you pay the highest cost.
Take care, coz the make the beast with two backswits are everywhere (including behind TAC desks).
Thanks Suzy. Now I see why people are so angry. I won't repeat what I said after viewing the ad. [bang] [bang] [bang]

Now you know why I "Cracked it"!! They tried this same shit with a campaign of Car vs Pedestrian with the same slow down by 5 kph or thereabouts and all would be fine!! [roll]
Well that got the crap picked out of it by Road Safety experts and the public and (Unofficially) a lot of Police, and was shown to be the pack of crap it was!!
I cant believe that the MORONS in charge wheel out the same simplistic, blatantly incorrect garbage yet again!! :o [bang] ??? >:(
While I do concur that the ad's message is not one I agree with, the whole knock of 5 thing is ridiculous, if I play devil's advocate for a sec, the TAC also have the other ad that takes the riders side, you know the one where the rider and driver "swap" and the message there is all about driver attentiveness, not rider fault. Maybe the TAC are just trying to cover all bases and are implying that no matter how we ride, idiot drivers will always exist so ensure the best odds.
I'm just saying, so don't shoot me :-[
I wonder if, every time you see the advert you phone the TV station showing it and complain about the content (i.e. as a rider I find such scenes very distressing or my kids get upset seeing it etc), the station may stop screening the ads. If enough people complain about the content they would have to stop showing it.
Hi H.
I was wondering about complaining to the networks as well, can't hurt I suppose.

....and if the rider had been doing 80 he would have passed the intersection before the car pulled out.
There are so many variables to an accident that it makes no sense to analyse it this way. But the "speed kills" message is simple enough for the general public to buy into and also helps to justify the revenue raising industry that it is based on it.
Not living in Vic I had not seen the ad before but had a non motorcycle Melbourne based friend tell me how confronting it is. It is pretty shocking now having seen it.
TAC will most likely defend the ad based on the premise that if it prevents one accident it is worth it. They are after all saving us from ourselves.
Road safety is full of more bullshit one line statements than football these days. [bang]
I'll stop now as I'm starting to sound like a Boris column in AMCN.

He has some very valid points. It will be interesting to see what, if any, response he gets.

I'm not usually one to get involved in these sort of discussions but agree with this one whole heartedly.
Yes we need to take responsibility for our own actions and we should be encouraged in this not blamed.
Oooohh an article in the mainstream press criticising the ad:
http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/giving-way-on-the-road-wont-kill-you-either-20120509-1yczr.html (http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/giving-way-on-the-road-wont-kill-you-either-20120509-1yczr.html)
Car drivers are allowed to kill and injure riders and get off relatively penalty free and this "Safety" ad supports this premise!! >:(
Been riding 40+ plus years and nothing has changed!! [bang] [bang]
It seems like the ad is coming true. :'(

Condolences to the riders family. Far too young. :'(

Thanks for posting that link. It's a great article and absolutely spot on.

geez I'd love 5 minutes alone with the people who signed off on the TAC campaign....I just hope that one of them, one day, puts a leg over a bike (of any kind) and realises what they have done.
The Australian government and it's offices are a constant source of disappointment.
The fella who's running the petition is also collecting survey data for a meeting he's having with the TAC.
Survey here if you would like to participate: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fif.vg%2Ftac&h=JAQHPFGub (http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fif.vg%2Ftac&h=JAQHPFGub)
Hope that works.

Heh! Spider, take a number, the line forms at the right!! >:(
It is my experience that 99% of the cretins that formulate these strategies have the required Education and letters after their names but have very little or NO practical experience and/or knowledge on the subject!! [roll]
