Title: Anyone know much about Montreal?
Post by: KnightofNi on June 01, 2012, 08:41:22 AM
Plannign a trip up there in early Aug with a bunch of my soccer friends and am looking for suggestions for restaurants/bars. Not sure where we will be staying just yet as the hotels have not gotten back to us with the group deals.

one of us has also decided to make this trip his bachelor party. How do you say "i'm sorry officer, I thought it was legal in this country." in french?

Lavalle is a great place....good strip bars...cheap lap dances...you can touch the dancers...

Chinatown is an easy place to stay and get to things...

Won't be as fun as when the Canuck buck was worth about 60 cents of the USD. Those were the days...

I think you mean Chez Parée but it's not "cheap", if you looking for that kind of party it's a good place to go.
http://en.chezparee.ca/ (http://en.chezparee.ca/)

Upper St-Laurent street it's the spot for the night life:
McKibbins Irish Pub http://www.montrealinfo.com/McKibbin-s-Irish-Pub-boul-Saint-Laurent/en (http://www.montrealinfo.com/McKibbin-s-Irish-Pub-boul-Saint-Laurent/en)
Globehttp://www.restaurantglobe.com/index_flash.html (http://www.restaurantglobe.com/index_flash.html)

You have goods places too on Crescent street like the Newtown but it's kind of BCBG http://lenewtown.com/ (http://lenewtown.com/)

This website have a good exhaustive list:http://www.highwayhome.com/travel/tourismbycity/montreal/montrealnightspots.html (http://www.highwayhome.com/travel/tourismbycity/montreal/montrealnightspots.html)

Restaurants i really like : Big in Japan (St-Laurent Street) website only for the adresse http://www.biginjapan.ca/ (http://www.biginjapan.ca/)
La Fabrique (St-Denis Street) http://www.bistrotlafabrique.com/en/index.html (http://www.bistrotlafabrique.com/en/index.html) really good food

If you want more exotique french place go on Mont-Royal street, called Le Plateau area too;
EDGAR Hypertaverne (tapas, beer & wine) http://hypertaverne.com/ (http://hypertaverne.com/)
Dans la bouche, website is kitsch but it's a good place too http://danslabouche.ca/!#/en/montreal/reservations (http://danslabouche.ca/!#/en/montreal/reservations)

More touristic in the old port you can find a plenty of good restaurants , but more expensive.

How do you say "i'm sorry officer, I thought it was legal in this country." in french?
translation:
"Je suis désolé Monsieur le policier, je croyais que c'était légal dans ce pays."
And if it's a lady officer you say: "Voulez-vous coucher aver moi?"
be careful with the "matraque" because they are a little bit nervous with that at this time ;)

Thanks for the info. I'm liking the idea of foie gras poutine. I've been waiting a long time to get real poutine too.

as for the translation, i do believe i shall refrain from asking the person carrying a gun and badge if she wants to make out with me.......unless i'm really drunk.

I found the people to be pretty unfriendly to Americans.

I was at the Hyatt for dinner and when we left the parking garage I asked the attendant in my best made up French 'our est le gaz station?'

He sent me miles out of the way to a station that was closed, when there was actually a station that was open just down the street.

Once was enough for me.

How are their jail accommodations?  I realize this is a seldom asked question...

past experience has shown me that when traveling it can be an important consideration

though it is rarely discussed in travel brochures...not covered in Michelin's Guides either

I could write the copy (note: I have never been to Turkey)....

"should one find themselves incarcerated in Istanbul,

it is important to note that the prison guards will require you to perform certain local customs

in order to see your lawyer or get fed. It is important that you understand that some of the practices

do not align to your country of origin's cultural norms and you must adjust your behavior accordingly"

I doubt it was because of that.  Some French Canadians find it amusing to screw with those who speak English, be they Canadian or otherwise.  As a primarily English-speaking Canadian, I have had similar experiences to yours while traveling in Quebec, etc.

They can screw with some other English speaking people.

Damn it never posted the rest if my original message. Anyways to answe u questions sadly the drunk tank there, well when i was there was awesome, best I'd ever been in, not that inwas a repeat offender. That one time though was an awesome trip. Anywyas just give them ur shors and belt, instead if tem taking your laces, you'll thank me in te morning when tour hung over and teying to thread them back in.  Well that my experiene with drunk tanks anyways, never dis get a free breakfast though and i you wanna know a bunch of us on a rugby team had some drinks that should be enough said.

Check out the smoked meat shop he mentioned above i can't remember the name but henis righr best around.

If tou can get there at the sametime of the races, the down town literally shuts down. And rhere are thousands of women ah i mean people out and about. Actually screw that go to calgary for the stampede, its always a good time at ranchmans bar, ah the old watering hoke, i use to live literally right behind it, well on elbow drive. Nothing like drunk cow girls, ah people for a fun time.

Christ now that i thing about it ever Canadian city is a good party, except for Van. I've ha fun in van don't get me wring but nothing memorable.   My tops are st. Johns(george street fesival) montreal, any time of year especially indy week, and calgary stampede(everyones country for that week). Ottawa is a blast on Canada day, Edmonton is fun too, toronto i always had a good time around PDAC(mining conference), lots if drunk business men throwing money around.   Van, is really the only one i've yet to have anything really. Time to change that!!!

Sorry bit off topic there, i strongly recommend montreal, if tour with a bunch of buds, it doesn't matter where you go to h e fun, but in Montreal the fun is literally right around the corner at most times.

If you can't tell i've done my fair share of traveling/partying or relocated to most of the cites for jobs. I traveled a lot for work so i could live anywhere i wanted.  At times i use to just live in Europe different place each time, was a blast. Sadly I gave up the expat life for a normal job christ what was i thinking!!!

Yes Ottawa is a blast. We once borrowed my buddies credit card on him and racked up a 2000 bar tab. My god it was funny the next morning, we put it back in his wallet with the receipt. Priceless.   Oddly that was rugby as well 15 (alright  it was more like ten  i didn't want to sound like a lush)of us drank on him that night. Well we paid him back but not for a few days. He was too drunk to remember. That and women in a hot tube in a bar was all i remember about that canada in ottawa. Good times.

I only lived in Montreal for a very short time as a young child, but spend some time there every year as my father's family is all from Montreal, although mostly all dead now.

I've also lived in Ottawa (10 years), Toronto (15 years) and currently Hamilton. Montreal is far and away my favourite Canadian city and I've spent time in every major Canadian city.

There are some french canadians who can be rude to english speaking folks, but I generally find most Quebecois very, very friendly.

Quebec women in Montreal and Quebec City are the easily the most beautiful and stylishly dressed in the country.

Montreal strip joints are the best in the North America. (if that's your thing)

moto gp weekend is a fantastic party. I'm not sure if they still run the beer festival the same weekend, but it is fantastic as well.

if you're a foodie, Montreal is a fantastic city.

if you're a night clubber, Montreal is fantastic.

if you're a pub person, Montreal has great pubs.

if you like architecture, Montreal is a great city.

we were discussing the trip last night and the girls in the group want to go watch guys strip.

the unsatisfactory answer i gave was "just wait until we get drunk. there's an indoor pool."  ;D

so that got me wondering do the male strip clubs have the same reputation as being great?
We'll have a "pay naked people night" where the males and females are segregated. lol

First day here. So far everyone has been very friendly. I just apologize for not speaking French.  [laugh]

Got in very early and have only wanted a bit of the city so far though.

Looks like a good portion of the crew (80 people) are bailing for tonight. Anything good going on for happy hr or later? Planning on checking out the Irish later. Let me know if anyone is around!
