So I'm new to riding and currently just use regular shoes or and old pair of Marine Corps boots for riding. I saw today on slick deals a 40% off coupon for the online puma store and searched what they have (knowing that they pair up with ducati for gear). Unfortunately, the only thing they have on their for riding shoes are the testastretta 3's. I don't have much info on them as far as reviews go and they are low-tops.
I guess what I'm getting at is, are my boots and regular sneakers okay? Or should I invest in the testastretta 3's or look elsewhere?
Thanks in advance.
Ps- the coupon code for puma is PUMASAVE40 and lasts until the 25th of this month (June)
None of the items on the Puma store are intended for riding. They are just shoes - no better than what you're already wearing.
There's been a lot of coverage on boots, so I'd suggest a search to suppliment.
But to sum up things that most street shoes or boots don't have vs riding boots
- Impact protection
- lace-less design (shoe laces in a sprocket = bad bad bad)
- Depending on the boot, protection against hyper extention, hyper flexion, excessive external or internal rotation of the ankle and medial roll
- hard toe box
- cut for flex riding position.
- etc etc...
Puma did/does make riding boots, though they don't appear to sell them on that site.
There's a lot of option out there for riding boots in a wide variety of price range as well. Plenty of brands, features levels of protection etc. There's even riding 'shoes' - 3/4 /hightop height foot wear
So IMO, get some real riding boots.

+1 I love my Sidi Vertigos [thumbsup]
Get a pair of proper riding boots. Sidis are nice, but get whatever ones you like and can afford. High top with ankle and shin protection. I'd recommend getting the most protection that you can afford. Broken ankles suck, and are a common motorcycle injury.
Motorcyclegear.com (formerly newenough.com) has a great selection in a variety of styles and price points...or see what your local dealers carry.

Daytona EVO boots are the best made IMO...but they aren't cheap (not even close). Most don't spend that much for street use. They're cheaper than a broken ankle though. ;)

Yes, last time I saw that it cost me 500 bucks for new boots. But thank you [thumbsup]
Thanks for the responses everyone. Looks like I'll be buying some boots
i have a pair of Sidi Air for summer, and TCX jupiter for everything else.
If you want to stick with puma.. check these out.. Had them for over a year and are amazing!

If you do get these, the first thing I suggest is take the fancy screws (the circular thing with 5 holes in it, and yes that is a screw) off from the side of the boots, put some red/blue loctite and screw them back..
Another +1 for SIDI boots
So I'm looking for a boot that I can also wear. Any suggestions? I have been looking into the Alpine Star Harlem Air boots...anyone use these?
Also wear for?
First I've heard of those boots - but they appear targeted towards the cruiser and tour market. Not as much protection as some of the items mentioned so far, but better than your current wear. You might find them tight across the instep with the more sporting - ball of the foot on the pegs, position. But then again, you might not.

No shin protection or torsion protection, and it sounds like minimal ankle protection. They're your feet, but i wouldn't wear them.
For the same price you could get the A* Net Air boots, or for a little more the Sidi Fusion boots...both of which offer better protection, should be reasonably comfortable to wear, and are low-key looking.
But like Slide said...they're better than what you're wearing now.
I really like the Sidi Fusions. They are in my price range a d look relatively casual. Thanks for the input guys!
another +1 for Sidi
If you can, go somewhere you can try them on. The sizes run different for all manufactures from length to width, etc. If you order online, you spend a fair amount in shipping if you have to send back multiple orders.
I really like the Sidi's, but they just didn't fit my feet. Some others were the right length, but I could pull them off my foot with little effort, meaning if I took a tumble I'd be wearing only socks. Not good.
Well after much back and fourth and watching plenty of videos on revzilla I ended up ordering the TCX X-Squared. They are considered "riding shoes" not as much protection as a full boot but still sufficient and comfortable.
If anyone has these tell me what you think of them. Thanks again all!
I bought Sidi Cobra Airs after reading through this thread. Plenty of protection and not too bad to walk around in. Would recommend them to anyone!
I ordered a pair of Icon 1000 Elsinore boots. They should arrive tomorrow. I'll post my thoughts once I get a few miles on them.
