Ok...Here is the question...is a Squid someone who is a danger to themselves and those around them...or is it deeper than that? I read alot about them being in shorts and t-shirts...is that part of the definition? If so, then would one be considered a squid if their riding gear was soaked, and they rode without it? Just curious.
I would say one who rides recklessly, beyond his abilties with a blatant disregard for his fellow man. In shorts and flip flops. Oh yeah and he MUST be riding japanese.. [roll]

This is a pretty bold thing to say IMO, correct me if i am wrong but I read about a local racer who crashed his Duc into the back of a car doing well over the speed limit. Gear or not squid move by a person who can obviously ride, and I am sure was wearing riding gear on a Italian bike.

So your saying that this is a derby? [roll]
Understood....Thanks for all of the input and threads! I didn't realize the magnitude of it all! I think the best definition was = "anyone you would look at and call a tool" Very good...

But that's not to say that squids are only people that don't wear gear. There are plenty of them that have on gear.

gawddammit!! Go catch some crawdadddies so's we can go fishun!!!
Hysterical description - with pics to boot - Really paints a good picture! Thanks Hyphen!
Are the highway patrol squids? They don't wear gear. I'm understand wearing gear to get on the highway or some back road riding but its 100 degrees here in Atlanta. I ride around in a t-shirt all the time. I actually think I would passout if I wore a jacket and had to sit in stop and go traffic for more than 30 minutes.
Those pics are too funny... It looks like Myrtle Beach Bike Week, or just Myrtle Beach for that matter...

Ya know... I was thinking about this just the other day driving right along side one of the motorcycle LEO around town... No gloves, the 3/4 helmet, no jacket, etc. I know they go through some intense training, but still, dress for the crash right? I wonder why they dont wear more gear?
Oh... Never seen this one before [thumbsup]

I doubt that. When the heatwave hit socal I rode my bike in 113 weather with a leather jacket, boots and jeans in stop-and-go traffic in hollywood. I didn't pass out and I think most people would be fine. I mean, if you don't want to wear protection because it's uncomfortable, that's your own prerogative. But don't complain if this happens:

Those are photos of my friend's injuries while riding a Vespa at 35mph. She had on a 3/4 helmet, tanktop, sneakers and capris.
ouch!!!
Definition of a squid right here..

I really liked the "Tool" definition and I looked at the pictures, First one - definitely a tool, Second one - Tool, Third one, I saw the shorts but got distracted by what I thought was a fin on his helmet - plus riding the dual-sport - you could tell he wasn't trying to look cool...
Anyway, I got all confused when I started to think about all the people that I call a tool each day and as they aren't riding bikes, what should we do? I know they aren't technically squids as we are saying, but I would lay a bet down that if those tools did decide to ride - I'd still be calling them a tool - so where to we draw the line - must they have a bike, or can we just leave the definition where it stands?
Am I mistaken in thinking that the term 'squid' was also to do with being in the Navy? As well as all of the aforementioned reasons - sandals, no gloves, no jacket, no clue etc..
Okay, I will admit, I do ride in a t shirt a lot. :-\ I'm not happy about it but it's hot.

Oh, my. Neither have I. That's squidliness on several completely different levels in such a short time.
to me, it's very simple: A squid is someone who buys/rides a motorcycle to look/feel cool, end of story. Usually these people have no business operating complex machinery that is a motorcycle. The type of thing that takes a significant amount of practice + coordination to learn. Significant amounts of practice + coordination are ususally nowhere to be seen. :-\

Yeah, squid is a general term for someone in the Navy. Typically used by Grunts (Army), Jarheads (Marines), or Silver-Winged Fairies (Air Force.)
