I hope I don't offend anyone ..... asking computer advice here in this forum. I do know a lot of you Duc riding folks are closet IT guys!!!
My situation:
I have a 6 year old 17'' MacBook Pro with a bad display...still working but all pics & text have a ''surreal wash" over the page.
I do have some valuable software (so I am told).....Adobe Illustrator CS4., Final Cut Pro & Photoshop.
I am trying to decide what to do with unit.
1. keep it and use it til it dies
2. sell it CL or ebay...get ipad or another Mac
3. fix it....this being a remote 3rd choice...Apple no longer has access to displays for this age laptop...so I would have to find a display and have someone install
Any ideas?
What would a rough value be for this?
Thanks
quick craigslist search yielded for sale ads for working models of that vintage for around $400-500...
a replacement display should run you about $200.
you could use hook up to an external display
i have a cinema display i use with my MacBook Pro
You can use time machine to back up your system, then get your new Mac and restore from your back up.
Software, reinstall from disk? Or if bootleg, then pay to replace what you need.

DucaChic....nice name BTW!!! [thumbsup]
I got this MB from a corp. Apple employee....he loaded it with the above mentioned software to give it value....I use non of it!!
I am just trying to get the most value out of the laptop...to buy new or replace the display if the value is not worth selling.
Thanks
I can't help you with your Mac question, but no one should be offended This is the "No Moto Content" board and someone will probably gladly help with any problem including marital issues ;D

personally, discussing different OS is right up there with politics and religion, and should be banned!
JK,...best of luck finding the right solution! [thumbsup]
check out iFixIt.com might tell you the cost to fix and sources for parts.
The Adobe software you have is now 3 releases out of date. Went from 4 to 5 to 5.5 and 6 is just hitting the shelves. Doesn't mean it doesn't work.. just not huge value in it anymore..
For real value, more details are needed. Processor speed/type, ram etc etc. Click the Apple, select 'About This mac' then 'More Info' and paste the overview.
Here is what I would do (in order of laziness):
1. Get a nice external display, bluetooth keyboard, and mouse; and make it a desktop computer from here on out.
2. Find a used model same as yours on ebay or CL and replace the screen myself.
3. (I know this is actually the laziest option, but it's expensive) Suck it up and buy a new one. I'd go with the other two options first though. I don't like throwing away things that still work well.

display panels available on ifixit for $279-ish and iv'e seen them around $200 elsewhere (probably used).
I've used iFixit in the past to fix my macs and ipods: well worth it in my opinion.
I think this is the screen (http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-17-Inch-Model-A1151-A1212-A1229-A1261-LCD-Panel/IF187-097) for your mac. Be sure to DOUBLE CHECK your model number and read through the install guide (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-MacBook-Pro-17-Inch-Models-A1151-A1212-A1229-and-A1261-LCD/2724/1) to make sure it's something you can do.
For $280 I would definitely give it a shot... [evil]
