Title: F*** YOU WILDFIRES! You and the horse you rode in on!
Post by: Le Pirate on August 10, 2012, 06:37:43 PM
Last summer we had to evacuate our home TWICE due to wild fires. Both times it came really close, and the second time took out several homes in the community just across the river from us (you can google Possum Kingdom Lake fires if your interested).

Well, what are my wife and I doing right now? We just got done packing all the essentials up as there is a several hundred acre fire that has moved into our valley and is expected to make it's way our direction. We haven't evacuated yet, but the people just around the bend on the river have. It's burning across the ranch next door to us, and we're hoping it stays just to the east...or that it calms some over night.

I don't know what the deal is out here (Palo Pinto County, TX), but we seem to have an issue with things burning  [bang]

I told the wife "make the beast with two backs IT." We've packed the essentials (few change of cloths and important documents) and the dog stuff. I'm letting the rest of it burn if it comes to it. After running away twice last year...I just don't care about everything else. It's just stuff  [laugh]

I understand your plight only too well  :-\.

May the wind blow in a favourable direction... Better still... may it rain.

You are in our thoughts.  May you return to a perfectly intact home.

We ended up getting lucky!

Winds slowed down last night and then shifted direction  [thumbsup]

Sadly, it just means it'll be heading towards someone else tomorrow. Winds are also supposed to pick up, and they only have about a 45% containment on this fire. About 50% on the one to the south of us.

Thanks for all the kind words, and well wishes.

We just assumed last year would be about it for quite a while. I mean, we had two major fires in one year. Who would of thought we'd be doing the same thing again, just a year later  :P

Happy to read that the winds shifted and you're ok!  What a year it's been for these fires.

"They" are predicting more of the same for the next several years.  Hopefully they are wrong like they are 50% of the time.

A few photos, if anyone is interested.

A Chinook was filling up it's dump bucket just up from our house:

getting just a little lower

and off he goes, to put out some hotspots

and of course, the winds have picked up today and it's 109F outside, so what do we get? How about a third wildfire! This one is in a more residential area right on the water...we've heard about 25 homes are in danger  [thumbsdown]

They flew right over our house on the way to the fire.

I just found out (via facebook) that WFAA channel 8 news stole some of my pics (via facebook  [laugh]) and showed them on the 5pm news! Then just a minute ago, I was interviewed by Channel 5, so I'll be on the news there on the 1020 broadcast  [thumbsup]
