Title: Well... I guess I'm a new M1100 EVO owner!
Post by: Johnny5 on September 13, 2012, 11:51:34 AM
Just plunked down a down payment on this 1100 EVO.  Gently used with 1200 miles, still 1.5 yrs left on the warranty, thing is minty fresh and all stock.  I was really looking to pick a up used 696 with ABS... but I test rode the EVO, and that was all she wrote... I had to have it!

Congrats!  Looks exactly like my bike.  Well, if you lose the bikini fairing, mirrors and reflectors on the fork legs. [Dolph]

Congratulations.  The bike looks awesome.  If I remember correctly, you have been looking for quite a long time.  Hope it is everything you were looking for.  I road one about two years ago with the Termi's.  I loved it.

Thanks Guys...

Yep Travman, I have been lusting after a Ducati for the past several years, the timing was just never right (Is it ever?? lol).  I'm sure they got sick of me at Cliff's Ducati, as I was in and out of there quite a bit. It's too bad they closed their doors before I was ready to buy.  Like SDRider I had an SV650 as my last bike, sold it in May, so I have been bikeless for pretty much the whole season.  I figured I'd pounce on a used 696 as some used ones with low miles seem to come up for sale quite frequently, but I was always worried I would be disappointed with the power.  They got this mint EVO in on trade for an 848 SF, and offered me a pretty good deal on it.   After I rode their demo model, it really felt like the absolute PERFECT amount of street power.  I mean, sure it's geared to high and could use better fueling, but between 4k and 8k RPM, wow... After the test ride I knew I wouldn't be happy with anything less than an EVO.  I actually look forward to enjoying it stock, and modding it slowly.  I'll probably do the Termis before I even change the front sprocket. Figure a tail chop, some bar end mirrors... etc, etc... lol

Nice bike!

After owning the 696 for over a year now, I feel as if I would enjoy a bit more power. However, riding around town and freeway it seems to do just fine...

Yeah, I'm guessing it's not THAT much different power wise.  Really it was more that I thought the EVO was going to be too much power based on some member reviews, but after riding it, it's really not. It's got good pep but it's really manageable.  My SV650 had plenty of go, and I'm guessing the 696 is close to that, so I figured I wanted something just a bit more, with longer legs on the highway.  I fell in love with the engine after riding it, really I think this is the absolute perfect amount of street power.  It's got plenty of grunt, but I don't have to stress about so much power that if I twist a bit to hard in a corner it'll spit me off into the weeds.

Thanks GK... I LOVE the older Monsters as well, always have.  I love both styles, old and new.  I very highly considered a used S2R, but having warranty coverage (I'm just not a wrencher) was a big factor.  Plus the ABS and traction control really sold the wife on the new Monster.

Speaking as someone who has just under 9,000 miles on a Monster 1100 EVO and as someone who came from an SV650 I put almost 17,000 miles on there is no way in hell I'd even consider buying a Monster 696 or 796 over a well sorted SV650.  There just isn't any upgrade there.  You are trading a bike with almost exactly the same power, better cooling, broader powerband and same ergos for a hotter running, narrow powerband bike with the Ducati name.  Oh, and you get higher maintenance costs with the Ducati.

If you want to go Italian from an SV650 definitely go with the Monster 1100 EVO.  Or better yet, the Streetfighter 848.  Now that's an upgrade.

And yes, the 1100 EVO definitely has more grunt than the 796.  I've ridden both.

Yeah I agree SD.  I am sure the 696 would have been fun, but coming off the SV like you, when you gave me that feedback that really prompted me to go test ride the EVO.  Man what a great engine.  I am super stoked... lol

Do the 14T front sprocket.  It is a cheap mod and it makes 6th gear usable on the freeway and the bike much better around town.  With the stock 15T you can't even use 6th unless you're going over 80mph.

I went with the CRG lanesplitter mirrors on mine.  Very useful for the commute on the days I ride it to work here in CA.  I took this pic last weekend not far from my home.

(http://s13.postimage.org/pb7ltu35j/IMG_8590.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/fqnz6ydtf/full/)

Still haven't gotten around to doing the exhaust or the tail chop yet.   [laugh]

One other thing, ask if they've done the rear wheel recall or if your bike was even affected by it.

My SV before I sold it.  Still miss that bike actually.

I picked mine up last week on the 12th, used with 875 miles, previous owner was a new rider and said the bike was too much for him.. I put on the carbon fiber Leo Vince EVO II exhaust over the weekend, and it sounds rediculous. Just ordered the Evotech Fender Eliminator, and the Ducati Performance Comfort Touring Seat..

Have fun with the new bike..

Yeah, just the exhaust.. It actually sounded really good with the baffle in place, but I removed it, now its pretty loud. And yes, the popping sounds even better coming off throttle.. This beast sounds like Satan having an orgasm every time you twist the throttle! Very deep and throaty, love it..

You're right they do look slim, slender, taut and trim [thumbsup].  I think its the lack of plumbing and some of the other bloatware that festoons some of the more portly models in the Ducati range  ;D.

I LOVE those Spark High mounts, that is what I want to get for mine.  I'm nervous about flashing my ECU though while it's under warranty.

BTW... I LOVE this bike.  The surging, spluttering, coughing in 1st and 2nd under 5000 RPM sucks a little bit sure, but I absolutely LOVE the power delivery.  And it is the perfect amount of power for the street.  I know people stay away from going under 4k RPM, but I have to say rolling the throttle in 3rd gear from 3500 RPM is VERY satisfying.  I love this bike.

Great looking exhausts and bikes.   :)

But, I can't get past looking at that ugly exhaust valve   :(  even though it is so small, it constantly draws my eyes to it.

The exhaust must flow great to that point because manufactures don't seem to want build a full system, just slip-ons.

Your Spark high mounts really look great, and the soundclips put them as my favorite sounding.  I know video is different then live but they sound nice and deep.

Did you do an ECU reflash?  Also, can you use those with the stock Fender or did you need to change that out?

I didn't reflash my ECU. I figured I waited this long I might as well wait till the warranty is up then go to town on it. I have an evotech fender eliminator on and had to slightly modify it to get it to work properly. Next spring I think I'll get the eliminator that is made for this exhaust. Nice looking exhaust SVP!

Thanks, cover is a carbonvani piece and it fits any new gen monster. I highly recommend carbonvani.com to anyone that wants hand made carbon fiber pars. And they can paint any color you want as well. Great fabricators to work with. The shipping times are bit slow to the US since they're in Italy but really great shop.
