I was thinking of doing a nice custom bike from a Ducati ST2 for a while now and finally got around to strip my trusty ST for the next challenge. After 2 days of cutting, welding and grinding she looks like this. [drink]

[thumbsup] i always daydream about doing an st build.
what tank is that on there?
The tank is from a Ducati 999, but will be modified during the build to give it a "sleeker" look.
Really like what I can see.
What seat pan is that? Did you make it?
Got the seat from Radical Ducati in Spain, but might change it to one of my own designs similar to the seat on this bike.

Bad azz. Me likey!
Everytime I take the plastic off my ST3 I want to make it into a naked bike.
I want to keep the rear end and tank but just strip it down.
I can't figure out what to do with the headlight and computer/dash. [bang]

I know the tank and seat are just resting on the frame, but I think you have the angle just right. Radical Ducati's bikes look awesome, but the tail section on their bikes is normally pointing a little too high for my tastes.
Where did you get the Radical Ducati tail section? A guy came on to the forum a while back who announced that Radical Ducati would soon have a distributor here in the U.S., but then I didn't hear anything more.
What kind of headlight are you thinking of going with? The V-rod and Yamaha MT-01 style headlights always look good. A traditional round Monster light would look good too.
Bike looks sick in the mock up. Nice job. [thumbsup]

He imports them from RAD directly. I ordered the cafe tail from them, it took about a month but it wasn't too bad, Pepo and Reyes speak English well, the only hassle was sending a bank wire transfer rather than credit card, paypal, google checkout etc

It will be ready to go as soon as I´ve finished the exhaust, tank, airbox, seat, suspension rocker for linear action, footpegs, wiring, .... ;D
Edit: Forgot the rear subframe. And, of course, everything else that will turn up ;)

$170 USD for the seat, $73 USD shipping from Spain to the midwest
Very cool. What I don't get from looking at the Shed frame chop is how the weight of the rider is supported. It looks like he sits on the tank's "tongue" and that's it. Frame supports appear further back behind where the seating position generally is. Am I seeing/understanding this wrong?

I did. Seating area goes all the way to the tank. Rarely does it go back toward the tail. There appears not to be any solid connection between the rear of the tank and the new subframe/tail section. How is that area structurally sound?

I get the seats from Radical in Spain, but is busy with a new seat mold that is between the Radical shape and my own seat for the SS bikes. (Like on my yellow SS) The seat and tank is mounted lower than the typical Radical setup. I am after a different look on this bike. Headlight will be from a Monster with a Monster fairing and Monster handle bars.

The best is still to come ;D This bike will be 2 bikes in 1 (Transformer)
#1. Monster (Monster tank & seat, Moto Motivo Sub frame and new Moto Motivo top triple to fit superbike forks and Monster handle bars and instruments)
#2. Cafe Racer/Fighter (Modified 999 tank, Radical seat and sub frame with high bars or clip ons)
All of this, just by:
1:Changing the seat sub frame (4 bolts)
2:Unplugging rear light harness
3:Unplugging Gas pump connection
4:Disconnecting gas lines.
The transformation takes me less than 30 minutes to complete.

A stock 999 Swing arm will NOT fit a stock M1000DS motor without case or swing arm modifications (or both) .
If my memory recalls correctly, OneSpeedPaul fitted a 900S air cooled motor in a 916 frame with a single sided swing arm.
I am using a 999 frame, 999 double sided swing arm and MTS1000DS motor, totally different setup.

Paul's bike used a non-narrow engine case (900ss motor) and fitted it to a sbk frame and swing arm (916). This was done by shimming the engine case.
Really my point was that you can in fact make a sbk swing arm work with a non-narrow engine case (Monster or SS motor).
Although the example of Paul's bike is not identical, conceptually it is.

In Paul's own words: "after figuring out the stud spacing on my own many moons ago, i ended up getting a nice used 900SS motor and machined the cases at the swingarm pivot to match the SBK cases, and *most* everything else fell into place." ;) http://www.ducati.ms/forums/57-supersport/16513-motor-swap-time-2.html (http://www.ducati.ms/forums/57-supersport/16513-motor-swap-time-2.html)
I also prefer the looks of the 999 tank and Radical seat, but like the more relaxed riding position of the Monster. Doing a bike this way is providing me with 2 bikes in one and having a Monster with the adjustability of all the 999 configurations. Hell, it is also fun doing something like this.
The swing arm was "free" [thumbsup] Left over from a previous project.

So what you're saying is a monster engine won't work with a sbk swingarm.
Ha!!
I stand corrected.
Paul was a good buddy and I forgot he switched cases.
The devil is in fact in the details.
I had an '04 749s with the cast style swingarm such as yours, always preferred the look of the forged box style.
Was just curious.

It is always a challenge with a naked bike and wish that there were a spot to hide it, but believe me, every possible spot has been occupied by battery, filters, wiring, sensors, electronics, etc, etc. That is the smallest reservoir that I could find for this application and to be honest, it is growing on me to a point where it is looking almost "cool". 8)

Not much, but the frame is dominating and the lower part of the tank + dark space under it is, in my opinion, a weak spot, visually....
I remember people talking about some R/C fuel tanks being small enough to hide 'anywhere'. World's first actual blinker fluid reservoir? Inside headlight bucket?
Or just paint it and leave a stripe unpainted for level inspection.

I agree that the white frame dominates a little and that some white accents elsewhere may help balance it. Maybe on the clutch (spring caps?) or a stripe on the belly pan (I see one on inside but maybe better on the outside)?
I know that everyone has an opinion and most suck, so I apologize if this is a pile on. Whatever you do, the bike looks great and I look forward to seeing more of this (and more builds!). [thumbsup]
Add some yellow arches FTW!! 8)
Ahh, Pedro, you speak of the dreaded Ketchup 'n Mustard/ Ronald McDonald combo that crops up form time to time on the DMF. I'm actually looking to swap out the red washers on the cycle cat rearsets I bought from you to avoid this (my bike is yellow).
But enough threadjack, here is what I meant about balancing. Stripe on bottom doesn't quite work because it mimics front fender stripe too much, but I think you get the idea.

Wasn't digging the engine fairing, but that stripe works.
Super cool overall! [thumbsup]
The front fender and the windscreen look too big for it IMO. A windscreen more like the Thruxton one would match better, and if you chopped the front fender front & back it would be more balanced.
That's nitpicking though...very nice. :)

Not really, but by now I am use to it. I am cleaning white wheels on a 906 Paso and Monster S2R too [thumbsup]
my guzzi sport 1100i had silver wheels, but they were a real smooth gloss clear (best i can describe and recall it) finish that nothing stuck to. even the moly in the rear drive oil. brake dust, etc, just wiped off.
my 851 has white wheels and they suck like all the others do. lots of the bmw silver wheels were a silver satin sort of finish and dirt used to just get in to them and stay there.
i've never seen a pair of wheels as easy to clean as my guzzi wheels.
I think it's really a unique and sharp looking bike. It's not the colours I would have thought to choose, but it looks great.

I didn't think I would say this about the 999 tank, but the top lines are beautiful! I love how cleanly the tank/seat pan flow. My favorite part is being able to see the '80s logo from the OPPOSITE rear quarter of the bike [clap] Very well done, and I am not a fan of white in most cases.
What about blacking out the reservoir? The vintage guys have come up with some very unique oil reservoir/tanks. Maybe you could find a suitable one for this application that actually adds to the uniqueness and aesthetic of your bike.
Again, well done! I am curious, to know how the bike will handle for you considering the longer ST swinger. I personal preference is a taller ride height and shorter wheel base to really "flick" the bike in.
I have put a few thousand miles on an ST2 and can say, it handled beautifully in the tight stuff for a longer wheel base bike. Just curious to hear about your ride thoughts. [Dolph]

I do a very subtle modification to the 749/999 tank to make it smoother. It also gives me the opportunity to put decals on the side of the tank, something that you cannot do with the stock tank.
