Title: The Yamaha XS750
Post by: Speedbag on November 01, 2012, 09:11:15 AM
So a few months ago my stepson hauls this thing over to my shop since he doesn’t have a place to store it. It’s a Yamaha XS750, from what little I’ve bothered to research so far it’s a ’78 or ’79 model. It had a hideous windshield, crash bar, and sissy bar on it which I removed so I could stand to look at it.

It was last run and tagged in 2008, needs complete brake and carb (Mikuni CV) overhauls to make it roadworthy. The kid’s budget is slim to none, so most likely just these key things will happen, and maybe a new seat cover, less silly handlebars, and a garage paint job on the tank and side covers. I call this Phase 1.

Phase 2 I have envisioned as a café racer kind of thing, no (or minimal) fenders, 3-into-1 header, shorter rear shocks, forks dropped in the trees to facilitate clip-ons, and some K&N pod filters. But as I said, the budget is incredibly thin so I have doubts this part will ever see the light of day unfortunately, but I’ve sent him pics of some café-d examples to fantasize about.

Anybody got any FHE with these? I’m more familiar with Hondas myself, have never really messed with a Yammie of that vintage or type.

no help here, but have had both a XS650 & XS1100 Special, but no 750, both were great bikes, and have many fond memories of both, reliable, fairly maintenance free & easy to work on (moreso the 650)

Have fun & keep us updated!

Ha... I had the Special II (600cc version), it was my first Street bike.  Can't really help you except to tell you that you could leave the thing out in the rain and snow and get on and kick it over with 3 kicks and start it up... lol.
