Title: What are these pieces?

And whats under them if I took them off?  The bolts on them though look different then your standard allen bolts.

It looks like you're talking about the heat shield.   You could take them off but the metal rim on that end of the can gets hot.  not fun for passengers

You should take them off to see what's underneath.   Get to know the bike a little more.  You won't hurt anything as long as you don't over torque the screws putting them back on.

Well that was my other point - they don't have normal allen screws so I do not know if they use special Termignoni bits.

what kind of heads are they? torx, maybe? square?

dont worry about the heat ive never had any complaints and my pilllion girlies complain about everything else ;o)
